The debate on a CF for Arsenal always focusses on the biggest names that are out there. A journeyman striker may be a far more efficient option for them. As good as he has shown himself to be, Victor Gyökeres was bought by Sporting when on paper he wasn’t a world-beater. Sometimes a signing of a player to do a job is as good as a player for the next ten years. Henrik Larsson was brought up earlier in the conversation. A short-term option. Scholes saying he’s not having the false 9 shows how stuck he is in the way he played at United where they played with a true number 9 or 2 number 9s. The false 9 can definitely work. Man City won the league a few titles playing a false 9 and they played better doing so. Most systems or styles work but you must have the correct players to make it work. If a team plays a false 9 then the wingers must score a lot of goals to compensate for the lack of goals from the false 9. Firmino wasn’t a false 9 but he didn’t score a lot of goals. It’s salah and mane that scored most of the goals.
