Coaching isn’t just martial arts instruction either. My favorite coaches have always been the ones that talk to us after class, make jokes, and learn about us as a person. It makes me push a little harder because now I know they care about me and I don’t want to let them down.

Exactly! I wanted to switch from kickboxing classes to boxing classes but my kickboxing coach is so good, nice and funny that I'm still attending his classes. The same members that have been together before covid are now back together. Feels like family. The coach knows us, inside and outside the gym. I've been to other gyms for boxing classes but it's never as good as this one so I'm staying 😁

I've been a teacher all my life, teaching all kind of different things to all kind of people and I've always seen teaching as my calling. When some friends asked me to coach them (heavy bag sessions for fitness purposes), I said "ok but it's something new for me so I'll be learning to be an instructor with you". Every was clear from day one and I always ask for feedback. They were really happy with the sessions and they brought some friends. Slowly expending now. It's important to listen to the clients but especially to watch their body language. Repetition is the key but it's essential to offer some new stuff and to challenge them. Let's keep it interesting! It's a long journey, we're all learning together 😉

So true I was stuck in locations with no bjj so I started teaching as a blue belt to build up training partners and sucked back then. I have been teaching the whole time and I’m now a brown belt with 7 years of teaching experience and am just now feeling mediocre teaching. Just when I think I got it figured out I get a new student who walks in and needs a different perspective, a different learning method, and bringing in different experience so analogies might not help them.

One man I trained with years ago did not do well in competing or even casual sparring. Yet he kept showing up because he loved the sport, and had great heart for it. He went on to be an instructor. He studied the art as much as he could in his free time, aswell as spent as much time as he could training with our instructor, and his top competing students, which costed a higher fee to do so, yet he wasn't planning on competing. He just wanted to learn the art the best he could. After a couple of years he than started to help newcomers, and was good at it. Its what he enjoyed. Many masters of thr art could show someone how to do something, but it takes a special kind of heart, patience, and commitment to be a coach and trainer I believe. He went on to start his own gym in another city. I haven't been to it yet, but I hope he's still true to the art. Such a shame whats happening now. But I won't get into that. Like you said I guess, people go after what sells. There will be a day when the walls they neglected to put up will be marched over, and they will see there wrongs.

I've never been a good fighter, in fact, I lost the vast majority of my matches. I've never gotten a compliment on winning matches LOL! But one thing I've always gotten a lot of compliments on is how well I teach, and how well I can make a student learn a technique like a wrist lock for example. There are a lot of people like me that cannot fight well, but are good at teaching. And I've seen good fighters that just cannot teach at all.

I have been training in martial art since I was 8 years old. I have been kickboxing since I was 18 and training Muay Thai for the last 12 years, I trained no gi jiu jitsu during that time as well. I also owned an MMA gym, but I have never had a amateur or professional fight but I have trained fighters for years, my son was a fighter and a champion and I have two other champions that I trained. I still teach a few nights a week so in my opinion you can absolutely be a coach even if you have never fought, I have had many fights in many gyms over many years so I know what works. Coaching is not only about punching kicking and grappling. You have to be there emotionally for the fighters, I became very close with the fighters I trained, they trusted me because I cared about them. I am almost 60 now but I love teaching more than ever so don't let anyone tell you can can't teach!

When you talk about coaching takes time and experience, I just got a flashback from when my old Judo sensei in the beginning of class said; ''Let's do something different today! Why don't we get one of you guys to do the warm-up?'' and then bowed to me and expected me to do it... It was terrifying! I got through it though, but it was with a lot of mumbling and stuttering. I just find it funny now that such a simple thing as a warm up I'd done at that moment for 3 years was so hard, when it was my first time guiding other people through it.

So much of this resonates with me, I'm currently working through the Level 2 coaching program with the British Judo Association. While I don't have the competitive pedigree of some of the guys on the course, I do have a fair amount of teaching experience from teaching guitar over the year, and I'm very focused on trying to teach the principles that each technique is using. It's fun, and it's a good program put together by a guy who's very invested in producing quality coaches. My question to you Ramsey isn't really martial art related, but I remember you saying you play guitar and that you've mentioned Steve Vai on the channel before. What other guitarists do you like?

Teaching is part technical skill and part interpersonal skill. Not everyone speaks combat sports when they start off or make the same connections when it comes to assimilating information. I personally like the high technical in dept aspects of martial arts and look for teachers, coaches and videos that offer me that, mostly. But alot of my current students don't resonate with that. So instead of forcing my mindset i've explained stuff in the weirdest of ways. Kicking technique as riding a bicycle to a cyclist, while comparing it to shouldering and firing a rifle to a military member of class. I've used captain america references to explain strength and defense and t-rex arms to explain framing and distance to kids. And recently i used one of the women's CW The Arrow fandom to deal with her frustration when she couldn't pull of a exercise(correctly) by telling her dramatically: *her name*, you have failed your city! So instead of getting hung up on failure she would laugh and reset and try again till she got (better at)it. I feel the biggest compliment i get as a teacher is not being told that i'm some high technical lethal killer or such nonsense but that i'm funny and that they enjoyed the class/session and will come back next week. I'd indeed rather have that then having a "thirty million and 0, and can helicopter kick the wings off a mosquito"record.

Very well said. I teach music (orchestra and string instruments, including cello!) 5 days a week as my day job and I find 'tmyself getting "stuck in a rut" from time to time. That's when I know it's time to shake it up and try something different, even if it's not perfect. Students usually notice and respond. I also started teaching HEMA casually recently and that's a whole 'nother ballgame. A lot of adults don't respond to something super structured as well as children and teens.

Great advice! Humility is a key quality often lacking in teachers, and one that requires discipline. I've been a teacher/professor for 10 years and agree its a practice you must commit yourself to each and every time if you want to improve. The best teachig happens when you learn to teach while teaching, that is, you realise the particularities and uniqueness of the process that is happening and fine tune to it. It also means you develop an empathy with the student, because you are both learning, albeit in different ways. Bad teacher believe they already know everything and its up to the student to do all the effort alone. Many do not even realise teaching is a thing in itself. Your advice shall help specially a many of those!

I really appreciate my mom for asking me to teach her kickboxing during the pandemic. I as the teacher have learned so much from my lessons with her. Plus, it's a safe place for me to make mistakes as an instructor since she's my mom! From this, I realised how crappy of an instructor I was before too hehe. Since I can't really go to the gym, she's been my sparring partner for the past year. Because of this, I've been able to practice much greater control during sparring cause I have to! I'm rambling a bit here, but just wanted to give a quick shoutout to her. Thanks mom! Edit: I also wanted to ask a question coach! Do you have any experience in coaching students with scoliosis? If you don't know, scoliosis is an abnormal sideways curvature of the spin. I've been diagnosed with it. Although it is mild, I fear it will have an effect on my abilities as a martial artist as posture is important. I've been doing squats, deadlifts and other exercises to supplement my martial art skills, but I'm just wondering if you have any advice or things to look out for? Many thanks! - Martial Mouse

In the movie Mystery of Chessboxing, the Kung Fu master disguises himself and a chess teacher. And he teaches chess first then Kung Fu. The legs drive the punch, just like the rook drives a pawn. The Guards in Chinese chess are like the shoulders. They can block direct attack. The Floyd Mayweather shoulder roll. Like the shoulders, they are vulnerable to "indirect" attack. Arm triangle. That's the Cannon checkmate against one raised Guard. The Elephant in Chinese chess are exactly like boxing guards and blocks. Block one way and you are vulnerable the other way and vice versa.

I'm one of those people that would often help my training partner learn whatever the instructor is teaching. I see what the teacher is showing, I think, "that makes sense." And when my partner struggles, I can sometimes help them cuz I understand it from the outside perspective. But then when I do it myself, I'll struggle also. Lol. It's a weird dynamic. My brain understands the motions and why, but my body may be slow to follow. I took some time but I noticed I'd do it even in say math class. I understand the problem and how to solve it, and my neighbor struggles, and I'd try to help them. Same in wrestling, and mma classes. I try to be the good partner. Let them learn the move, then add a little resistance as we go so they can learn better. But then when I do it, I almost limit my ability as to not "show off." Whether I can do it or not. But I've also had really good instructors, so I'll try to imitate and emulate the way they showed it.

Comparisons with music are very apt here. When I was studying, I realized a lot of the professors that were there because they were good musicians were rarely the best teachers/coaches. Sometimes you'd get someone who actually really liked pedagogy enough to invest their time in getting good at that AND also were world-level instrumentalists, but it's rare since it's a totally different skillset, like Ramsey pointed out. Often, I think that this happens because people don't want to feel like their invested effort was worth "nothing" in this new thing they're doing, specially because they're superficially related. It's often an ego thing too, specially when you get someone moderately famous in a teaching position and they just suuuuuuuuuck. I've seen it plenty of times. Now, in contrast to martial arts, in music it's very common to study pedagogy as part of the profession, so one would hope that would help things, but it's up to the individual if that's what they want to do or how much attention they're really paying to those disciplines.

People rarely understand that being teacher is so much more then having a practical skill in something. First, you have to have a real insight into what is going on. The mechanics of and the trickery that works behind the scenes. Second, you have to have insight into your students. How they work and what is the easiest way to make them tick. The third, no less important part, is having personality of a teacher. Teacher is not an educator. Teacher is more of a guide and a partner. He is there to help you learn, not to educate you. By the way. I have a question for you regarding religious texts. It is a commonly known fact that neither of the Testaments was written in modern English. All that people have are translations of, sometimes, dubious quality. Quality translation may simply be impossible in the first place (think of not really having a good translation for Spanish "tutear") or choice of words matters a lot (think of "to learn" vs "to study", "to teach" vs "to school") and so no matter how hard you try, the text is already deformed. Then, to add insult to injury, these translations (especially the most quoted ones) are, usually, extremely old, so cultural and language drift kicks in and even relatively good translation becomes awkward and hard to read. In the end, text you read is more of an idea of Bible, rather then "Word of God" itself. Not to mention the fact that Bible is composed of separate books that were never meant to be read as a whole and some of these books were not even found in one piece, but rather reconstructed from manuscripts and (already) erronous translations Should a person of faith allocate resources to actually studying the texts? Being able to read them in original languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, New Testament Greek) and in historical context of their creation, like examining myths and history that might have inspired certain episodes, like common flood myth

They carry around a big cooler of ice and beer and they walk up and down the stadium to sell beer. It was incredible. I thought to myself, this is the REAL Kung Fu. Carrying water up and down steps are in The 36 Chambers of Shaolin and Kill Bill vol. 2. That's real Kung Fu! You can have a student carrying a cooler of ice and beer to sell at an MMA event. That student think he's only selling beer, but unknown to him he's practicing his Kung Fu so one day he will be in ring and not just walking up and down the steps of the stadium.

I've been teaching martial arts (Aikido and FMA) for a long time. I've taught people as young as 6 years old all the way to 68. No one can teach you how to quickly assess a person's learning style and adapt a lesson to it. No one talks about how exhausting it can be to be personable and charismatic to everyone in front of a group, but then appeal to an individual's personality, strengths, and limitations a few minutes later. It seems like most people are afraid to talk about how past pains and traumas can affect people on the mat, and hardly anyone talks about effective ways to refocus on the moment without being overly dismissive. The more delicate and nuanced parts of teaching can only be gained through experience or the select few teachers/instructors wise enough to have learned those lessons and properly bestow it on another.

I have a GOOD question for you,Ramsey:can you give examples of very old MA practitioners or masters(by very old I mean over 70 years old) that can beat in the ring or cage younger fighters,or can defend against multiple atackers that are younger in a self defense scenario ?It is a very tough question(I think),but some examples can be found on the Internet.

99/100 times they would loose because they are just too old, slow and weak. But there are videos of people attacking old man and the old guy knocks the young out. But that ia very rare

when it comes to martial arts for kids, do you have any advice for maintaining a level of discipline while still making classes fun? the situation i'm experiencing is giving my students an inch, and having them take a mile, i feel like i have to be the "bad cop" sometimes just to keep them in line, but i've also gained the reputation for being the "scary instructor" at times.

what age group specifically are you talking about? That may help as different age groups misbehave in different ways I find. Generally speaking, making the age groups as narrow as possible has helped us because at least we've got kids closer together on a developmental level, and I think kids act out when they get a bit bored. They don't mean to, they're just entertaining themselves. So if most of the class is younger than them, they're going to finish activities quicker and then get bored, and then distract others. I hope that helps!
@RamseyDewey
@RamseyDewey 2 жыл бұрын
Cassandra bring up a good point. The age of the kids is one of the biggest variables. That being said, you might not realize it, but kids actually want structure, routine, and discipline. They need an authority figure and a role model, not just a fun guy who plays games with them sometimes. Classes can be fun, games can be played, and with kids, this is necessary- but make sure you command respect, establish and follow rules with consequences, and follow a routine.

@@RamseyDewey i've experienced it all, we got a "little ninjas class" (meaning like 4-6), and we teach all the way up to adults. we do split the classes into toddlers/ youth/adult generally, but the majority of our students fall in the 6-12 range. i've been trying to work on commanding respect without fear, but it's so hard since the respect in my generation was more of a basic thing you had for teachers. trying not to lose my temper has become a daily challenge with some of these kids, especially since consequences like pushups seems to be.... well inconsequential. i worry about things like sitting them out cuz i have enough content to cover as it is

From the Kung Fu masters of films and TV, they use understandable metaphors to illustrate a martial concept. Let's say you want to impress on a student that in order to do a hook punch, you have to twist your body into it. You can demonstrate this with a He-Man action figure, that has a rubber band torso twisting mechanism. kzbin.info/www/bejne/inSzd6Z7hNScpas

I don’t know much really, but I think you should work on getting a better body and become the person you want to become. And afterwards, you can work on finding a girlfriend. If you are depressed, you might need some professional help mate. Good luck.

You also don't need to be great at whatever you're teaching. The best athletes in the world have coaches that clearly are worse than them, but they are great coaches who are knowledgeable so their individual skill doesn't matter

@@RamseyDewey that's what old school boxers tell me, to many injuries wreck yr potential. Sports usually short term goals, not taking into consideration whole life. There's many reasons lots don't teach actual fighting but for basic self defence, more so developing balance, posture. Most focus on fighting, how they understand that, some get taught to focus on themselves, I find much better skill with the later, can always switch, 6 months and ready for sport fighting, some like this. But lots find there students not so fit, strong as to compete in certain fields- pros. Need to be full time, 24/7 either way. Everyone different goals. Main point as long as people don't lie about what they doing, student knows what he getting- more health, fitness OR fight ability. Kung fu can be used in either way. One my teachers from Beijing- no fighting but can't touch him- original Beijing wushu team member. Another from Xian- can't touch him and when try I just go flying. I'm use to kick boxing- amature. Only several fights, but lots sparring. Lots don't want to show either, there rules. It's such a big topic. Some I've taught to fight- they did ok, all ameture matches. Some I've taught health and fitness to, not everyone wants fight nor need self defence, just as a exercise- taiji these days. One my taiji teaches just taught sparring, 10 min round, change opponent, for 2 hrs. That was very informative. I'm 51, started at 14, there so many ways to train someone.

I have found that the best instructors I have found in anything were ones who were not naturals at what they do. Those who are naturals really have problems explaining how they do it because, well, it comes naturally to them. The best teachers in anything are ones who have the ability to analyze and dissect everything and convey that information back to the student. John Danaher has never competed and I'm sure his top students could easily submit him but he's still one of the most brilliant BJJ strategists and instructors because he can make you better.
