The concept of mini-retirement changed my life. I'm no longer waiting for some retirement paradise when I'm 65. It helps to know how to fund the lifestyle. You know, making money while you sip that piña colada by the beach does help. I wouldn't have been able to do it otherwise.

Yeah, people miss that part. You don't jet out to Puerto Rico with your life savings. Proper investing and a good business acumen are big pluses. Invest in the stock market, real estate, build businesses. That's just it.

I think the retirement crisis will get even worse. A lot of people can’t save because of low paying jobs, inflation, and insane rental rates. And now that home ownership is out of reach for middle class Americans, they won’t have a house to retire with either.

Things are a bit strange right now. Inflation is making the dollar weaker for buying things like basic needs, but it's getting stronger against other stuff. So, stuff like stocks, houses and precious metals aren't doing so great because folks are putting their money into banks for safety but I'm worried about my retirement savings losing value fast.

Even if you’re not skilled, it is still possible to hire one. I was a project manager and my personal portfolio of approximately $400k of my retirement pension took a big hit in April due to the crash. I quickly got in touch with a financial-planner that devised a defensive strategy to protect my funds and make profit from my portfolio this red season. I’ve made over $250k since then.

I am in my early 60s and retired at 53. Lots of people gave me pushback because they had difficulty grasping the concept of not working if you don’t have to. I looked at my life as stages. I earned everything I have now through a lot of hard work, but I owe it to myself to “stop and smell the roses” in my final stage of life. In my case I left the country after I retired and live in Latin America. It allowed me to get away from all the negative things happening in America while appreciating my new environment. I have yet to meet anyone who regrets retirement.

I retired early and can say: - Make sure you know how to get insurance. Thankfully, Obamacare has standardized much of health insurance. But go find an insurance agent now to discuss ALL the different types of insurance you may need when you retire. - Remember the Matrix? (: Have a part-time job or some other work to keep you *stimulated* and in contact with the outside world. - While you‘re still working, invest in real estate to become a landlord, or start your own business, hopefully something that creates assets you can interest or pass down to your children. Ageism is real and you can’t fire yourself from your own job. Working for your parents adds something to the resume, and the college essays and interviews!

There are some odd bits of advice here. I realise that some people may regret retiring early and want to go back to work. The last thing I'd ever consider advising someone in that position to do, if they haven't successfully done so before, is to start their own business. It is a very stressful and financially risky thing to do. As someone who has retired early, I don't find it difficult or boring to fill my time with interesting things to do. Find new friends, by all means but the way Chris is talking, sounds like noone has friends who aren't their own age. I have friends both older and younger than myself. I volunteer a couple of days a week and have enrolled to study visual arts part time. Also, most retirees I know have grand children they love to spend time with. I definitely don't use my time spending. This is, for the most part, a ridiculous suggestion. I think this guy might be a little too young to appreciate how little time we have on this planet and if work isn't your passion, and you're in a position to retire, do not waste time waiting for the 'right time'.

I retired at 50. It took over 25 years of planning. Friends, colleagues, and family always ask me the same thing, “but what will you do, won’t you be bored ??” I’ve learned one important fact: Boring people are often bored in retirement. So make sure to build a life you want to retire to. This could mean a lot of things to a lot of different people. But if you never had any interests, projects, or dreams before retirement… you may surprised to discover that retirement will NOT magically solve this.
@Sunsuperman

When they say you will be "bored" is them simply saying that to try to make themselves feel better with the fact that they can't retire or may never be able to retire. It's because they need to imagine something negative about the other person's life because they won't be able to achieve that same financial independence. It's something called copium.

The new job becomes managing risk in investments. Money will always be a concern. You need to manage the nest egg and you can certainly see your portfolio grow and shrink. I withdraw 1.3% to 1.8% of my portfolio value monthly since Jan 1. My only suggestion to those looking to retire on the dividend portfolio=save 12 months of dividends as a cash buffer against adverse market moves. Excellent! We retired in 2019 at age 62. We were surprised how little we needed for a happy retirement in terms of withdrawals from our 401-k. With more time, it is nice to wait for the sunrise before going on a morning run and having the time to run for 2 hours. It is also nice to avoid crowds by grocery shopping early morning, fishing weekdays instead of weekends, etc.

I was unemployed for a year and had large breaks (9 weeks) during my studies and I can tell you, after exercising 5 times a week and watching movies and series day in and out, having no routine is horrible. Although I'm investing as much money as I can, I don't think that not working at all makes me happy. I think, I'd study again but this time something completely different and without any rush.

No matter when you decide to end working life there will always be risk. Yes, your health may decline at 62 but the same is true at 67 and for sure at 70. The only issue is the total funding in reserve and how long it will last. Time is a commodity that can never be replenished. Income can be generated at any time even in you 70s. SS will go up with the annual COLA. Funds can grow if invested to do so. When you withdrawal the decline is not linear depending on what the markets are doing. There will always be risk no matter when you decide to end working life.

One of my life goals was to retire before 55yo. I succeeded. I expected a much slower lifestyle and enjoying a good amount of time not doing anything. Friends asked me when told them I was about to retire "what are you going to do?" My reply was whatever I feel like doing. I learned a bit of wisdom after retiring "Success is getting what you want and happiness is wanting what you get." After nearly 10 years I have to confess I'm overjoyed. The freedom I have and the control I have over everything I choose to do is unparalleled to my expectations. I'm an introvert (not excessive) so I have no problem eating out alone even though I've discovered the joy of cooking, I don't have an issue going to a play, movie or other events by myself because of the freedom I have to see what I want, do what I want and for as long as I want. I've taken over my investments instead of using a broker and utilized my finance degree to maintain and insure my financial freedom. In all, if one plans for it, early retirement can be very up lifting. Preparation is the key.

Can I ask a personal question? Do you feel that your approach to finances & work, and driving towards such a significant goal of early retirement, is the reason you're spending so much time alone now? I ask because we all only have so much time in the day, so usually for finances to work out so well, you'd have to sacrifice relationships, or your health, or sleep!
@blktester
@blktester Жыл бұрын
@@matthale5526 Only in part. I'm at my core an introvert. That's why I have few friends, I've never enjoyed popularity having experienced it to some degree in my 20's. Also, I have always been rare among most people in that I planned and or set life goals in my late teens. One of goals was to be financially independent by 50yo. As time passed I realized that most people don't concern themselves with the question "what will my life be like at 40yo and beyond." As I grew more financially stable an unanticipated circumstance became clear. Several of those that were considered friends began to see me as an ATM. My self confidence refused to allow me to be one. Even my romantic interests saw me as a cash cow although I thought I was living modestly. One asked me after 3 months dating "why do you live below your means?" Even family would borrow money and never repay it. This reminded me of something I read in my 20's "as you climb the ladder of success there will be those you will have to leave behind because they won't e beneficial to your goals. " So I chose me over them.

When I was working every Sunday I cooked meals for the week ahead, I was a legal professional and prepared what I'd wear for everyday of the coming week and got to work 20min before to eat breakfast at the office. After grocery shopping early on Saturday's the rest of the weekend until Sunday evening was free time, sometimes I sleep and other times I had fun. When I went on vacation it was full replenishment time for leisure, fun and additional sleep and me time. Plan your work and work your plan.

I have been planning to be able to retire when I’m 55. If I work longer, fine. But my que to leave work is when my first grandchild is born. It’s a new and very rewarding job. I also plan on going to work part time at a running shoe store or become a XC coach. I’ll be just fine. 😎

I broke my arm years ago and was not allowed to return to work from my doctor for 13 weeks. Oh it was great at first getting up when I felt like it and doing what I wanted when I wanted. But as the weeks passed it got more and more boring. By the time the 13th week came around I was begging my doctor to clear me to return to work as I was going out of my mind with boredom. I got enough inheritance money that I can retire now but I know that just in a few months that I will be so board that I will be biting at the bit just to return to work just to stop being board out of my mind. Before I got the inheritance I would work as many extra days as I could to make extra money. Now post inheritance I don't want any extra days at all. (I work 12 hour shifts 7 days every fortnight as a truck driver.) A few days of sitting around the house doing nothing is great months on end doing nothing is as boring as all hell.

I've seen both sides of this. It really depends on each person's personality whether or not they will be successful retiring early. Some people love it and have ZERO problems adjusting. Others struggle like it's described in this video. I have observed that people who associate most of their self worth with their job, tend to really struggle retiring early.
