An Em pentatonic scale is a G major scale. The E is the relative minor to G just as A is to C etc, count down 4 notes to the minor from the root. But Major scale requires changing scale shape when changing chords. Play like Dickey Betts and you will get it. Good luck

Math guy here, I know this will maybe go over most people's heads but it's really fascinating and I encourage you to read into it. There is a very good reason why the blue note is the one it is, it's more than just deliberately out of tune, it's about as "out of tune" as it's possible for a note to be. The blue note is the tritone in a minor context and the tritone has a unique property. You see the basic reason why two notes harmonise and sound nice together is because their frequencies are related by a simple ratio. For example a perfect fifth is actually a ratio of 3:2, i.e. in a perfect world (12 tone equal temperament is not generally perfect) the frequency of G2 is exactly 3/2 or 1.5x the frequency of C2. Note that an octave is precisely double the frequency, so C3 = 2 x C2... a nice ratio between notes leads to a nice resonance, the sound waves interfere in a quickly repeating signal and it sounds good to us. A perfect fourth is 4/3. So nice simple ratios give is nice harmonizing chords. Now what about the tritone? Well, that's different. You see 12-TET is a practical approximation of reality that allows us to transpose melodies but assuring that each two successive notes are the same ratio apart (e.g. C to C#, or Gb to G). This is not really true in the world of "just intervals" which is kind of the basis for music. It turns out that the tritone is a completely "fake" note, it doesn't align with any nice ratio. In fact, it happens to be equal to the square root of 2, a well known irrational number. This is for good reason, the tritone is "half way" to an octave, that is, 2 successive tritones (flat 5ths) will be an octave. But remember frequencies don't add, they multiply, so it's not half of 2, its the square root. Anyway, that's why the tritone sounds so particularly disharmonious, it's literally as out of tune as a note can be, in a strict mathematical sense, and that in itself seems to make the note interesting to us. Funnily enough, it might never have existed in pop culture if not for 12-TET, which just happens to us an even number of notes per octave (there are other choices, even 17) and this means it splits the octave perfectly in half, and so the tritone lands PERFECTLY (none of the other notes are perfect) on root 2.

But I never really made it much further then smoke on the water because in my teen ages I always opted for the shortcut. After watching your "Music Theorie" series on YT a couple of weeks ago, I took our old children's guitar from the attic and started playing and exploring as suggested because your explanations already making sense to me! About Eleven days ago, I signed for your beginners course and it's simply wow! The main reason, that I'm quite confident to get it right this time, is your unique way of explaining and talking! Please start talking for ages about everything you want if you like, because I'm sure there is so much to lern from, it's highly entertaining and sometimes it relieves the pain at my fingertips a little! These a probably the same people who think theory is for dummies which is because these things are beyond their understanding whilst they're stuck playing powerchords & old tabs & convincing themselves that "theory is for people who can't play". On the contrary theory is for people who can play & want to learn how to play better still. Videos like this are excellent for that purpose, thanks & KEEP TALKING 😁

I like that you talk. I certainly don’t just want to watch someone jam, and not explain the how and why of how the fret board works. I take lessons in Delaware, when my teacher talks... I listen. Because everything he told me has helped me get better.

i'm having a go learning country guitar and I keep thinking of the major scale with the flat third as the country scale along with using the mixolydian pentatonic scale.

Listen to Miles Davis' All Blues for a related idea. He plays G7 for the first 4 bars, then goes to G Dorian for the 5th and 6th bar.

Paul, Thank you. I've been playing rhythm guitar and chord progressions for 30 years. " i'm not a lead guy" that was just my thing. Never learned theory or scales I left that to the lead guitar guy>>stage right. Everybody has their strong suits, lead was not one of mine.. Your lessons have opened my eyes and ears to playing soulful blues leads that bring tears to my eyes !!! This is amazing!!!!!!

Nooo don't stop talking! The only people who say you talk too much are moody little kids who probably get the same line from their parents. Listening to your knowledge is an honour for all of us, and incredibly educational.

Man people really do be out here telling this man to stop talking when I’m out here wishing the videos would be an hour long. Soak up all the knowledge you can from this guy. Seriously. This is someone who’s devoted a better part of their livelihood to music, and instead of taking his talents elsewhere, he’s decided to share his knowledge with the rest of us so that we can learn too.
