Yup… We said it. Bali is overrated.
After spending a month in the incredible Indonesan Island of Bali, we ralised that there were a few things that didn’t match our expectations. Yes, we know, obviously this is not Bali’s fault! All the social media hype that exists about Bali on the internet had simply just given us unrealistic expectations of the Island.
That’s why, in this video, we want to share with you all the reasons why we think that Bali is overrated. We stll love Bali, and encourage everyone to visit! But do it for the right reasons and be sure of what to expect when you arrive.
We hope that this video serves you with information, and helps you in planning your trip to Bali.
And if you don’t like what we said… don’t worry! It’s just our opinion 😉

Very informative and thank you for being brave enough to tell the truth. Our Australian friends have said Bali was overrated for years. A lot of that is due to destinations catering to tourists more interested in Instagram postings than actually experiencing the culture.
@alexlee2765

Have you been there yourself Steven? Australians will say Bali is overrated if they are looking for beaches with soft white sand and swimmable sea, you have thousand miles of quiet, white sand beaches at your own backyard. What drive people coming back times and again is that unique culture, incomparable accommodation and genuine friendly people. I'm saying that as a Malaysian who has been there 50+ times not for the beaches but the incredible diverse landscape, culture and hospitality. We have very good beaches and pristine islands but devoid of culture and activity because of religion restrictions.

You’re both being too kind. I live in Bali (permanently) and you are correct! Never put much trust in photos Tourists areas are NOT Bali. I recommend to stay clear of them Go up north where its beautiful, authentic and not just a bunch of hotels cafes you’d find anywhere. What’s the point! Experiencing Bali is not staying in the lower 1/3 of the island. Trash, Rude foreigners, expensive food and your money goes into foreigners (who own all these places)pockets not the locals. Beaches double as the sewer there and the out of the way ones are full of coral/rocks ( go high tide only)Most of the waterfalls are mud baths due to the rainfall BUT away from tourist areas it’s a stunning island with the nicest people you’ll find!

There is no way you can walk on Bali without spotting canang sari, not to mention their indigenous architecture, temple, gamelan sounds, dances, rituals, sculptures arts, handycrafts. Even in balinese native language there is no word have synonim with art, art is in their people daily life. Talking about culture, and dare to comparing it with places which even import their own tourist souvenirs coz they don't have tradition of craftmanship to make those. What culture?

It’s so true, Siargao is the paradise that people expect Bali to be. Heard it so many times. Balinese don’t like to hear that but it’s the truth. Just hope Siargao learns from the mistakes of Canggu and don’t concrete over all the green rice fields. In a way it’s good there aren’t direct international flights to Siargao yet to slow the craziness.

I have actually the opposite view on the points here Beaches -There are SO many beaches in Bali for all kind. Surfing, black sand, turquoise, transparent. You can go to the one you want, daily. Pollution -This is true, there is a lot of pollution, but remember that all this pollution is from America sending garbage containers that are too expensive to ship back. This is a big concern in SEA. The community in Bali is trying hard everyday to clean the roads / beaches. It's far from perfect, but it's a constant effort. Roads -I'm from Canada and the roads in Bali are amazing. I can go anywhere around the island without any issue. Traffic is a different thing. If you go into high tourism area, you are in traffic and it's hard to navigate with a car. I didn't see to many potholes but I've seen non-existant road as main roads a few times. But 99% of the time there is a better alternative, so it's really up to you. I think the people you are following on social media are always posting the best of what they find in any area. If you really want to see the reality, these are not the people you want to follow. Bali is the perfect balance of an island which is why it's not overrated. Top surf spot, Top beaches, Top food, Affordable place, Top scenery, amazing local people, amazing culture. No where is perfect in the world, but Bali is hard to beat.

I'm confused with what you're saying honestly. You only stayed for a month and you didn't even go to that many places there. You're saying the authenticity of Bali is further away, but it isn't. You can find the authenticity of Bali even in Ubud and Seminyak. And you went to one waterfall, which was a touristy waterfall. There are so many waterfalls there, not just one. And no, not all the great places there are far away. But if you love traveling so much, why would you complain about going to further places? You could've stayed in Sedimen or Uluwatu or Ubud or Nusa Dua. And you said so yourself about the island at the end of the phillipines. So its a nice place because its further away from the busy areas. Of course there would areas that are busier like canggu, but then there are areas that are more peaceful. Bali is a large island. There's a lot going on there. People go there for the culture and for surfing too. Eventhough Bali don't have the best beaches, but it has very good oceans to surf. And Bali was dead during the pandemic for 2 years and now its starting to grow again. These tourists actually help with the economy of the island. And why do you have to say that people are showing the good sides and not showing the bad ones? Did it ever occur to you that maybe the things that you say are bad are not bad for others?? I think you just went there for different reasons. You should've just said Bali isn't for you instead of saying it's overrated.

Raja Ampat? Togean? Wakatobi? That's just some, Even the bigger islands Java, Sumatra, Borneo. Btw, mentioning MORE UNTOUCHABLE NATURE, go to Borneo DUDE, GURL, go to the rain forest and you will find ORANG UTAN, do you know orang utan? I hate that you constantly compare Bali to "other southeast asian countries" as if Bali is it's own country when in fact it's just an island out of 17.000 islands in the country of Indonesia. Plus the only positive thing u credited is that you get to meet people from other countries, not even the locals, yet you were concerned about "most restaurants are owned by expats not the locals" as if u would care enough to interact and find out about Bali from the local's perspective.

@@teejayoz1221 i'm okay with them liking other countries more cuz malaysia, philippines, etc does have underrated places (plus Malaysia have way better infrastructure). They say things about authenticities as if Bali is not authentic at all, when even the hinduism in Bali is so different from the one in India. the gamelan is distinct compared to the one you would find in the island of java, etc. Smh.

I am so glad somebody has highlighted these issues in Bali which I have been saying for years regarding mass tourism, pollution, not-so-good beaches, too many motorcyclists, litter. And the best parts of Bali is the northern parts which are not easy to get to. I'm not much of a fan of Bali but neighbouring Lombok is better which is where the Gili Islands are closely located to. Better beaches, better scenery, better everything in Lombok. But Lombok is less popular because I know a few tourists who were there when I was there moan about the Muslim call to prayer especially in the morning and I just laughed (even the locals mentioned this to me as well)

We spent a month in Bali and went all over with my friend who’s lived there for years. Visited a Bali aga village where we saw locals practicing for a full moon dance which was amazing and drank Tuac with the locals. Loved Lovena in the north a GitGit was pretty. We got invited to a family’s compound for the full moon festival which was amazing. Great Balinese jingly music and very theatrical costumes. That was in Ubud but Ubud itself was not for us with all the eat pray love cliches. Chilled at a fancy hotel in Nusa Dua which was nice and spent a while near Jimbaran and Balangan. Uluwatu and the kechak dance were spectacular. However, large parts of the place are overcrowded like the rice paddies and polluted and it has the feel of a paradise lost. The Babi guling was one of the only local dishes we had. Loads of western food going on there. Met loads of Balinese and they were friendly. The place needs some thought in terms of where it’s going. It’s a good example of tourism wrecking a place.

Spot on, you both hit the nail on the head. We have been travelling to Bali since 1997 every year for months on end, and, what you say is so correct. Its cheap, granted, its noisy, dirty, polluted. But, get out of the tourist areas and Bali is picture perfect. We dont stay near tourists, we go country as far as we can. Even balinese food is being commercialised for tourists. Locals eat one way, tourists eat another way, But, we are about to go back again for 2 months, waiting to see what happens with F&M disease, covid is high, restrictions are about to be enforced due to Political meetings about to take place soon, cheers.

Try imagine this, a tropical island with a very distinctive and really thriving culture unique only to that small number of islands, have volcanoes, waterfalls, beaches, rice terraces, world class waves for surfing frequented by world's A list surfers, scuba diving spots, and people are humble and down to earth. It visited by Millions every year, so theres the downside of it. And the fact there is no balinese want argue you in this comment section really tell you how the balinese people are. Southeast Asian always tell you their people are warm hearted and polite,,yet they will badmouthing their neigbors in every chance they got. Balinese not gonna do that believe me. PS: You can go to wayag, Misool, Triton bay, kei islands, Halmahera, Anambas, Belitung, banyaks, telos, mentawais and have your perfect beaches for yourself but Bali is Bali. From an ordinary man who is not a balinese.

I agree with you, sir. I am from Malaysia and have been to 9 Asean countries and hundreds of cities and towns. Bali is the only places I have visited more than 3 times (actually 50+ and counting) because of the diverse landscape, architecture, not to mention the only living, thriving culture that has lasted almost a millennium. Furthermore, with bahasa so similar to our Malay language, I have spoken and travelled to dozens of villages throughout Bali with ease and pleasure as everyone was friendly and helpful. We have nicer beaches and pristine islands in Malaysia but they are much pricier and really boring due to religion restrictions and lack of competition within the country. I have also been to several places in Java, Sumatra, Riau islands and Lombok, they just don't have that magical feel of Balinese villages with beautiful gardening, creative and traditional arts, statues and smell of jasmine (from canang sari) and francipani unique to Balinese cultures.

Go to lombok, malukus sulawesi for nice beaches. Bali is not just overrated but already spoiled. I used to live there for years. I speak quite good indonesian and what annoyes me the most that the locals are really rude. They smile at you most of the time but try to listen what they say... they are really unrespsctful and treat foreigner like a stupid animal who is only good for paying a looot. Many times I heared conversation when they discuss infront of me how much bule price they should give to me. Honestly until I didn't understand indonesian I was happier here. Go to java. Many genuine helpfull people there. I don't want to be too harsh as probably it has 2 sides and some toursits might be unrespectful too. But it won't change the situation that it doesn't feel nice to be there. You have to deal with too much just to enjoy the nature, which is indeed nice. However you will find same or better nature outside of bali

When i travel to any country, I like to observe how their people live, how they interact with each other, family bond, relationship etc. Sometimes i notice uniqueness but many times I see similarities. I try to spend more time with the locals chat with them and understand them more. To me, wherever you go, behind all these commercial attractions that each location offers, there are real people living their life. They are the essence, the soul of the place you are visiting. The experience, the knowledge you gain, the stories you hear are worth much more than thousands of insta photos.

I saw many foreigners wanted to see rice terraces in bali. The fact is china, vietnam, philippines, borneo, thailand have rice terraces and are just as beautiful. In fact philippines have a unesco world heritage rice terrace. Another thing(fact from many vlogs) and reported in media : garbage issue since long ago (on some beaches not all). Are beaches there really better than philippines (boracay, el nido) or thailand(koh lipe, phi phi, krabi, koh samui) or even malaysia(redang, perhentian, tioman etc etc)? For start try search this: tarimbang beach Sumba island, jerangkat beach bangka island, Padang melang beach Anambas island, Madwaer beach kei island those beaches I mention just a few of them that can put your highly praised nacpan beach into shame. Mass tourism and the lack of authentic experiences in Bali are the main factors of why you think Bali is way too overrated. Maybe you need to go back one day to spend more time at a relaxed pace and see other parts of Bali. Oh, and btw I find it funny that you keep comparing Bali with other countries in Southeast Asia. Did you really think that Bali as a stand-alone country instead of a part of Indonesia? With around 17,500 islands, Indonesia has an intricate coastline of over 80,000 km (50,000 mi), the third longest in the world. So many beaches to see.
