If we say to you “you alright?” It just means “hi” we don’t actually want to know if you are alright or not The correct conversation generally goes “You alright?” “Yes thanks you?” “Not to bad thanks” You then go about your day and you never stop while having the whole conversation 😂

Not strictly accurate. Pavement defines the surface, while footpath and footway define the purpose, i.e. for foot traffic, thus it isn't restricted to unpaved paths.

I've gone to London (from Canada) for Christmas for about 7 years now and Londoners give themselves a very bad rap when it comes to manners and friendliness. I have never felt snubbed or found anyone to be rude. I think it depends on what people consider to be rude. If you ask someone a question and they're in a hurry, they're not being rude if they can't help you. I've had "I'm sorry, I'm running late." a few times they've said "Head in that direction and ask people along the way." I'll also say, the people I notice standing and texting have been the locals. Probably some tourists, too but a lot of the locals. I know it's not me because I have vertigo so I can't look at my phone whilst walking so I put it away.) Regarding stretching across the walkway, this is clearly not applicable to one parent with four or five kids. Everyone I have met there have been so lovely and THEY really appreciate that I really appreciate the city and are always ready with "...have you seen..."

The two fingers swear sign comes from the days of the English fighting the French (plus Scots, Welsh, Spanish etc). The French would capture English archers, and to prevent them from being able to use a bow and arrow ever again they'd chop off their index and middle finger. So the soldiers would stick their two fingers up to the French in battle to say "I've still got my fingers, come at me bro". Edit: Just seen this has been explained a bunch already lol

Good advice, all very accurate. Stand on the right on escalators, don't jump the queue, be on time, don't block the middle of a busy pavement......yes, yes, yes and yes. Follow that advice, and you'll have a great time in London. One more thing, London is so cosmopolitan, that no matter how exotic or interesting you think you or your accent are, you won't be exotic or stand out to a Londoner; that can be a bit hard on foreigners who might have hoped this would make them a focus of attention and spark a conversation about them and their plans. Having said all that, London is actually very easy going and there are lots of great things to do and see. You'll have a great time here.
@antonvanniekerk4894

More annoying than people who stand on the wrong side of the esculators are people who seem to find that exit barriers as they leave the tube come as a complete surprise, and wait until they are just about to reach them to realize that you they need to have their ticket in their hand.....you will see the Locals will all have their tickets in their hands as they approach the barriers, while the tourists will wait until they reach them before they begin searching through their *fanny-packs* in an overdue effort to locate them, and delay the frustrated folk behind them.......on a far more sublime level, we don't like being reminded of the fact that you may be from a country that is wealthier than ours, and can afford to do things we can't, so if you come from somewhere that would consider the taxi fare from Heathrow into town an option (and this applies particularly to the Japanese) then keep that to yourself.

Londoners are a busy bunch, we are always on the move, we have developed a distant glaze from the commute! but will be helpful if approached but the GOLDEN RULE to not piss us off is the escalator rule. I've travelled the world and have lived in cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Athens, Amman, Paris, Berlin etc. Out of all of these cities and many others that I have visited and lived I would say that Londoners are far more friendly and helpful than other places. London is an international and cosmopolitan city with many cultures and ethnicities - you may not be understood by all, or helped, but on the whole, Londoners are much better and are polite. Making eye contact between a man and a woman on the London tube or anywhere else in the world will be considered to be flirting... where is it not?

I will admit that we all hate when people turn up late, but I noticed that more often than not, people are, on average, about 10 minutes late to the meeting. Sticking 2 fingers up comes from the long bowmen archers from the battle of Agincourt to show the French archers that they can still operate a bow as they were still in possession of their index and middle fingers because those French archers who were captured had their index and middle fingers cut off, so its origins are a show of defiance 👍🏼

The fingers is very traditional. A lot of people have picked up "the finger" from TV, but when people are actually angry and they react instinctively, it's the fingers, in an aggressive upward wave. I like the story that it dates from the Hundred Years War as a sign of defiance to the French who hated English archers and supposedly liked to cut off the bow fingers, but I don't know if that's true or not. Linguistically, it's the sign for "F--- off" specifically, rather than "F you", or "you shit" or whatever. So it's got that extra bit of fight-starting intent that ".... _off!"_ has.

conversation one - I'm not so sure about, it kinda depends on the person and the time, and whether they need to be somewhere, or are trying to do something. Let's put it this way, if I'm travelling on the train or tube and I can hear people aren't sure where they're going I'll usually try and help out. On the other hand I do work in the offices for the Underground, so I do actually think my assistance could be helpful! Random conversations - maybe depends on my mood, I've had a few from time to time - but never in rush hour!

Just spent the last 10 months in London and while most of what you said was spot on, I don’t agree about the Queues in London. I was very surprised by the lack of a Queuing at bus stops. So many times I’d go to queue up and people would just be crowding the bus doorway.
@simontmn

Bus queues have sort of broken down, but people keep tabs on who arrived first, and normally let them on first. So it's a sort of virtual queue.

Be aware that, to most of the UK, London is the "remote south east". It is where we might go for a weekend or short holiday as there are lots of things to see and do. The description of peoples behaviour you gave is why I would never want to live or work there. As for the escalator thing, the rest of us, being majority right handed, tend to keep to the left.

Most of the reasons for why Londoners are antisocial in public stem from the fact that nine million people live here, and two million people use the Tube every day. That's far too many to talk to, & it's even far too many to smile or even nod your head at. If you tried employing rural manners on a trip to London, you'd end up with your neck and cheeks in extreme pain from frantic chin-jerking and forced grinning. It's far easier for everyone if we all just mind our own business.

Using two fingers stems back to wars fought with longbows, the longbow men would signal to the enemy to let them know the still had their finger's, if they were captured their fingers would be chopped off. Bit of useless information.

Andy Ward. I’m not sure that story is true. But it is said English (or Welsh) archers (longbow men) could shoot 12 to 15 arrows per minute. At the Battle of Agincourt the English were greatly outnumbered but there were 5000 archers. So 5000 men shooting (say)12 arrows per minute equals 60,000 arrows per minute. No wonder the English won.

Andy Ward. I have no information of my own. I’ve just read on several different occasions that the story of the raised two fingers originated in the 1800s. I can’t remember the name of any of the publications. I haven’t googled it. Perhaps it would be a good idea to do so. I am sorry to have raised it and I hope you are proved right.

Ok, so I live in the Southeast US and one thing that's very common here is holding the door open for people coming into or leaving a building. On a scale of 1 to 10, how bad would it be if I held the door open for someone? Like if I stopped to hold the door open, would the person behind me think: "This is it. This is how I get pickpocketed in London."? I'm concerned I'll hold the door open out of habit and it'll just lead to a really awkward situation.

The origins of the v sign come from the battle of Adigingcour where the English Archers would wave the two bow draw fingers at the enemy, who if captured any of the English Archers would cut off those fingers making them inoperative. So over time, this has become a gesture of defiance.

Population of London is just over 8 million. Of those 3.4 million are foreign born and these are old figures. That makes 4.6 million left of the original 8 million. Then out of that number we need to extract second third and fourth generation immigrants. Then add to that all the EU immigrants that are now here. Try finding a London Cockney in the East End now; they are as rare as hen’s teeth. I saw a statistic a year or two ago that stated that 4 out of 5 London residents are of foreign descent. London is like it is because it is full of foreigners.
