I have been growing ginger. Galangal will get to be 8 ft tall and does not die down. It is harder to harvest because the new shoots grow on the outside. Tumeric grows in layers in pots and is the easiest to grow. Zingerber grow laterally and not vertically unless you place your ginger sideways. Tumeric will sprout a month after harvest. Zingerber, I harvest after it blooms and dies down Nov-Jan. I keep in in a tray in the shade with a little bit of peat moss for moisture. I plant it in pots again around March-April. It can be harvested in 5 months after it starts growing, but has to be harvested once it blooms or it will just crowd and get a lot smaller.

We grow ginger in two dollar window boxes on a large window sill beside our birds' habitat protected by 18" wide galvanized wire 1/4" hardware cloth. We have budgies. They love eating the greens off exactly level with the top of the hardware cloth. Yet we still get almost a year's worth of ginger plus rhizomes to plant right back in. The hardware cloth barricade has a scrap of hose along the top edge as a soft landing spot for the birds.

I wheel them outside for the summer, then bring them in and grow them under lights for the fall and winter. They thrive either way, and it's great to be able to have fresh anytime I want it. The taste of all three of these is so much better when harvested fresh then when bought at the store.

Did the lighter turmeric taste a bit like green mango? If so you have what they call Mango Ginger, it's actually a kind of turmeric Curcuma amada. Sometimes it ends up being shipped out with regular turmeric. In the Indian market near me, people will pick thru for one or the other. That's how I learned about it. It's mainly used as a pickle in India

We are growing ginger in a pot indoors with grow lights until it is warm enough to put outside...a couple of them are brown...should we pull them up or cut off the brown parts or just leave them? A few of them are bright green so wasn’t sure if these brown ones are rotting or dead or not and if that would affect the other ginger and also if there was a way to “bring them back” to health? Thanks
@wendiland2 жыл бұрын
If it’s brown, soft, slimy or smells bad usually are signs of it rotting. Cut the bad part off so it doesn’t spread to the good part. I like to dab a little bit of turmeric powder on the cut area then plant it back. You can also choose to leave the fresh cut out for a day so it drys a bit prior to planting.

I'm growing some of theses things for the 1st time and find this useful information, clearly I'm doing the shade part a little wrong tho they are doing OK in too much sun 9a. A couple naive questions: 1) the leaves are often used in cooking with galangal I believe--what about ginger and turmeric? 2) is it practicle to simply store rhizomes in the ground and harvest as needed? (part of this was answered...thanks!)
@wendiland3 жыл бұрын
Leaves of ginger and turmeric can be used to fragrant food as well, but most people use tuber since flavor is more intense. I think would be fun to use leaves as a plate to hold your food, or wrap food to grill. Best to only harvest when needed and leave the rest in soil to retain freshness. If you get cold damp winters, it’s best to harvest in fall to prevent rotting. Good luck with yours!
