Funny, sensible video as always. I will admit that the release of the OM-1 makes me want to sell all my Fujifilm gear simply because of the lenses that are available. I’m probably going to stick with what I have though, as it might just be the consumerism that’s firing me up. I wanted to bring up that on my XC 50-230mm, I have been able to pull focus on the telephoto end smoothly after quite a bit of practice. I use the focus ring on the clockwise rotation setting. Turning left brings focus closer, and right further. As for the focus ring operation, I have it set to non-linear, which really helps out on the telephoto end. It’s a bit sensitive, but once you get a better feeling for the movements, you can go from infinity to a meter/meter an a half with a single rotation. I think what also helps is having the distance scale displayed so you can have a more accurate read on what’s inside of your focusing range. I once had a shot set up where I was filming a Song Sparrow that was probably only a meter away from me, and once if flew out from the bushes, I pulled focus to a Great Egret at infinity. I was happy to get that kind of result, especially on a cheap lens. I keep hearing how Fuji lenses are plagued for video, but at the end of the day I think a bit of practice and knowledge of the gear (especially of it’s limitations) really helps out. I’m not entirely sure if this set up works the same on the 70-300mm, nor the 100-400. I’m thinking of renting out either lenses next month for a project, so I can follow up. Let us know if you try it out, and if you have success or not. I think the main problem with Fuji lenses is that the focus transition doesn’t look smooth, which I’m guessing is a factor of the focusing motors themselves. Let’s hope the release of the X-H2 lights a fire for the wildlife and nature videographers out there!

Fair comment! My OM-1 video was just a brief first-looks as I wasn't given a chance to actually shoot anything meaningful with it yet. I just had a very short time to shoot some b-roll of it for a quick news piece. Frustrating I know, but sometimes that's all the access I get. In contrast, I had the GH6 for two weeks, so my first video about that is way more in-depth with loads of results and those giant face vlogging tests you love me for! Don't worry, I will be making a second video about the OM-1 which will be in-depth just as soon as they get one to me for a reasonable amount of time.

Great video, and thanks for representing the wildlife highBird shooters. Here's a tip for your telephoto lenses and birding when time is tight and you need to nail manual focus super fast. Set up Back Button AF, then use manual+AF and set your focus switch to Manual. Then set your camea to one area, or point, or single area, whatever it's called (not the continuous, not the tracking and not the detect modes). Then, when you need to nail the manual focus fast..., Aim the one area or point on the target (bird), then press the back button, and you'll either be in focus, or close to it. Then fine tune where you want the focus point to be. Pro tip... use your manual focus to move the depth of field by keeping the subject in focus, with f/9 or f/11 if possible. This depth will give you enough focus area, and allow you to move the blur in front or behind the subject.

AmateurPhotographer also has a video of the new menus in pretty good detail, doesn't go into every option but shows the layout of pretty much all tabs. All things considered, the functions seem to be much better organised - way better than Sony, and way better than what Olympus had before. As a Fuji shooter I'd love a menu this organised, and the ability to add pretty much anything to your "My" menu by pressing the record button (I think?) is a great feature.

15:40 Kasey, why didnt you just press AF button on the back of XT4 while in MF. It would have jumped straight to the railing, then you could start manually focusing to fine tune. With Fuji whenever you are in MF, the AF button on back of body still initiates autofocus. Works perfectly for scenarios like the one you describe to get you to general area, then you fine tune with MF.

For the Fuji, try using back button autofocus in manual mode to get you close, then you can fine-tune it. Not a video guy, so I don't know if that works in video mode, but I do it all the time with photography because branches can make it impossible to nail focus in auto mode. And make sure you have the 70-300 switched to 5m-infinity.

A couple of friends and myself are able to pick up several products including cameras and in seconds find faults in the ergonomics and layout. Canon blew it big time with the R7. They put the power switch where the rear control dial was (like almost forever). Now they place the multi-directional joy stick in the centre of the new location of the rear control dial. Then the button you would program for back button focus is just way too close to the rear control dial. Many Nikons and the Panasonic G9 have the power switch in a great place. Then to top it off, no battery grip and none planned.

Fuji focus hack! You can use the shutter button to catch focus quickly and use the focus ring on the lens to fine tune. There s an option in the menu, peak focus or something like that. Theoria apophasis has a video about it. I was using this tehnique on a xh1 with the 60mm macro (old and slow lens) and it works great once you get the hang of it.

Hi Casey, one tip to focus while you're filming instead of manualy focus. With the XT4, put the single focus square very small and focus by pushing the back button AF-L. It will focus even if you are in manuel focus. By pushing the back button with your thumb, you will be more stable while filming instead of the turning the lens. 👍 And I have both lens 100-400 and 70-300, the 100-400 is easier to manualy focus !

I have to lower the sensitivity for CAF on those zoom lenses to use them on my OM-D E-M1 Mark III. It's a little better on the OM-D E-M1X maybe because of the mass/weight. I don't know. But the 100-400 was really tough to use for video for me. I might sell mine because the 12-100 with syncIS is just so nice. But I have used the 100-400 okay on the E-M1X with the C-AF sensitivity at -1 in the movie menu settings, and it's better and smoother with the 2axis thingy turned on in the lens. A friend with an OM-1 says he sees improvement with the 100-400 on that compared to the Mark III. Maybe it is. Hope so.

The OM-1 is really a photo-first camera. Compared to the GH-6, its video is crippled other than AF. The GH-6 is a great video camera, except from the stupid AF that still isn't great, and it's crippled for photography. Both have great IBIS. If those cameras have a baby, that baby will either be the perfect M43 camera or a quadriplegic. BTW, the R5 and R6 animal eye AF works in all video modes, including slo-mo. P.S. the OM-1's "touch" LCD doesn't let you touch the menu controls. I confirmed that by asking B&H. You have to use the control buttons. Slowly, because there are no scroll wheel on the back. I hate that stupid 4-way toggle button..

Hi John, caught your comments during the live feed on the GH6 launch last night! I couldn’t help notice how the two Lumix reps ‘danced around’ the topic of AF!? I am an Olympus fan, but have owned and shot with Panasonic before. That GH6 isn’t gonna touch the OM-1, for stills. The weather sealing is fantastic on the OM-1! But it’s good to have both of these releases, and to know M4/3 is still alive! Best

@JohnDrummondPhoto 2 жыл бұрын
@@georgedavall9449 thanks for remembering me. The Lumix guys didn't so much dance around the AF issue, as run away from it. That's when I left the live cast. Other than that (Mrs. Lincoln), the GH-6 is a video beast to which the OM-1 can't compare. I've said on other forums that the perfect M43 camera would meld the GH-6's video specs with the OM-1's photo and AF with the IBIS of either.

In the deep menus on the Olympus, you should be able to change the image stabilization (IS) settings. I don't have the camera in front of me, so can't give the exact location in the menus. There should be 3 or 4 different settings. All direction, only vertical, only horizontal, etc. Might pay to play around with them, I think the aggressive IS is very good for stills, but I think Olympus suggests less IS for video. I am a loser photographer, so I can't give specific suggestions on this topic, but figured I'd mention this, in case it helps.

@@Tatiacha thanks for pointing that out! I never have been a super menu guy. Many Olympus people love it, so who am I? Just not for me. Actually though, they have changed the deep menus a bit, and I don't care for them, so I have used the super menu a bit more recently to do the initial set-up on e-m10 iv. I needed to shoot in RAW only and had just literally turned on the camera for the first time, without time to dog through the unfamiliar territory, I just used the super menu and it worked great for that. I don't personally change to much after the initial set-up that cant be changed with the dials, but I do see how it could be useful to those who are doing more types of shooting and constantly need to change various settings.

I guess use case is important… a lot of usability features and stuff like slow mo and no recording limits is pretty important for people who shoot in the field. Gerald shoots in a studio, so it’s natural that he hyper-focuses on image quality in a controlled environment. Truth be told, if any of these youtubers stopped telling you what camera they use no one would be able to tell a difference between MFT and FF in most scenarios.

Thanks! GH5-II has very reliable C-AF in tracking and human detect (both face and body) modes. BTW, in tracking mode human body and face detection are also included. One can touch a person on the display and the camera is tracking him either as arbitrary subject or if detection met as human body or face. Tracking AI is capable to track turning around, moving face out of frame (then it's tracking body). As for pulsations if you are not greedy and shoot at f/4 and more pulsations are not visible due to large DoF. But! Reliable C-AF requires Pana lenses of 2nd versions: 12-35 f/2.8 II, 35-100 f/2.8 II, Leica 25 mm f/1.4 II etc.

Don't get me wrong I love seeing what is possible, from other creator who showcase all the best aspects, I would love to see Philip Bloom release one of his block Buster camera review movies, I appreciate he will also be brutally honest about shortfalls, one thing about Potatoe Jets video he does talk about menus and the manual focuss ring control settings it's a long video he start talking about menus around 20:50 and goes through the focus ring settings around 22:40, he shows the linear and non-linear sellection and it appears on some lenses you can select a variety of focus ring speeds between 90° and 1080° of total rotation, that impressed me. Your right all the loyal microbers are at the back of the queue waiting to test and break their hearts. Gerald was so ahead of the game that he bypassed the OM, straight onto the Panasonic GH6 to declare " you can't cheat physics "! I like the undone but this time he did the micro image good and proper. Geralds is all in elsewhere, knowing something only angry Ken can understand. Do you think their's life still left in the old microbers yet?

Amazing... I have watched this channel again after a few years and like a dog chasing its tail, the wait for the magical camera is still on. Its still unclear what this type of audience wants to do with the latest camera (or the last 2 they bought)... but it always seems to be missing some possibly unused feature that is a deal breaker. For the OM-1 Chris Eyre-Walker's review is insightful in terms of the intended audience of the camera (NOT for vloggers)... he may be an Olympus ambassador but at least he shows hard evidence of whether the tool measures up to the specific job requirements. As for the GH6, it will be an incredible waste if a film-making camera like that is measured against vlogging designed cameras. Appropriate users will most likely be using manual cine lenses on it (so the back and forth of the talking head to check focus will be irrelevant). At least Gordon Laing was honest enough to admit that "it (YT) encourages hyping-personalities, clickbait and news-worthiness over more considered content ...". We should learn to get the best out of what we have...but who has time for that, right? Especially when you are recommended to buy the "better" version that was released 6 months after you bought your camera.

Casey, you really had me chuckling on this one! 😂 Love it! I watched the preview by Panasonic last evening, and not too impressed. The one guy on the left seemed to know his stuff on the video side. I think their comment/ excuse for the continued DFD AF was lame. It does look to be a powerhouse for those serious about video. I got my questions answered by ‘Lumix Village,’ as opposed to those two clowns! I was not too impressed. John Drummond said he got a confirmed answer the touch screen does not work on menu items. Come on Olympus! Be interesting to see what Gordon says in his review. Stay well! 👍👍👍👍✌🏻🇺🇸😁👽📷

Im comming from the E-M1X and purchased the O-M1 a few months ago. So far so good. After using this new camera I can say the following: from handling, usability the X is in its own class. Allone the Front- and back wheels on the X are much much better to operate. Then the viewfinder in the OM1: in dim light, perfect, in bright light like direct Sunshine you cannot see much in the viewfinder. The display is much too dark. Yes, the viewfinder in the X has much less resolution but much more brightness and is fully usable under all environment conditions. Same situation with the LCD display on the flip screen. Pictured quality is more or less the same and therefore I think I will go to sell the OM1.

Totally agree with you on the weight factor it sort of defeats the purpose of M43 system being smaller and lighter. I already have both the A7S3 and a EOS R with primo Glass and they're just to heavy to carry around. I'm going to stick with my OLY M2 and my G95 for now.

UPDATE - UPDATE I downloaded a copy of the OM-1 Manual to confirm the ability to save Video settings under the Custom Buttons and determined that you CANNOT save video settings in the four Custom Buttons. Page 56 of the manual has the following: Under Savings Settings it reads "Choose a mode other than (small video icon) and adjust settings as desired" and on use of Custom Modes on page 58 under Recall Settings it reads: "Choose a mode other than (small video icon)". So the new OM-1 camera appears from the manual to have the same limitations as the EM-1 Mark III. This is a significant limitation for videos. Even Panasonic's G-9 has this capability!
