During one of the many replays during the red flag, I suddenly noticed a car on the outside of Perez, who had gone into the corner as the outside car. Could not figure out why Gasly was there all of the sudden, but now it all makes sense. Some great recovery driving right there, and great reflexes when Perez got sideswiped.

@@urmom3046 I looked at the start a couple of times, including Bottas' race cam, and I don't think Hamilton would have been where Bottas would have ended up if he'd tried the inside. I think Ham was so far ahead so he would've been gone. But maybe Bottas didn't see it that way and didn't want to risk it even slightly. When looking at his race cam once again, I think that when he came close to Norris, he should've tried to go left. He had too much forward momentum to even try to turn sharper to go inside, much easier to try moving left of Norris, there was at least some space there. Anyways, not even easy to say what everybody should've done - even with 20-20 hindsight vision, slow-motion, many replays, and multi-cameras 😁 The result is: Bottas made a big Boo-Boo and many teams got to pay for it, in points as well as in dollars...

For stroll his Analysis on f1tv basically said that stroll broke around the same time as alsonso (most likely using him as a marker). Alonso was on the outside and ended up very very deep in the corner but because he was on the outside it didn’t result in anything. And as you can guess stroll was on the inside and couldn’t slow the car down.

At least Stroll tried to find a gap and swerve to the right. In Bottas case, if you see it in slow motion, with the cockpit cam, he didnt even tried to avoid the crash, and he had plenty of space on both sides. In slow motion, watch the stearing wheel of Bottas before crash, instead of try to avoid the crash and swerve to any of the sides, he swerve left to really hit norris and push him onto the RB's. I wonder if Perez could’ve survived Turn 1 if he’d been hit by Gasly. He might’ve taken damage to the rear, but there’s a possibility he could have been pushed wide out of the way of the harder side-on hit from Bottas, which completely took out his side pod.

First of all, it's quite surprising to me and a bit unfair, the amount of flack thrown Bottas' way after the incident. I remember the pit straight pile up at Portimao last year. No one called out any particular driver in that incident and that was in the dry. As I watched the replay looking from turn one, it seems Bottas' decision to position himself directly behind Norris was more to his undoing than braking too late. There was ample space to his left. That said, it appears Norris brake significantly sooner than the other front runners, which is what really caught Valtteri out. Gasly narrowly escaped thanks to Checo braking that much later. The long and short of it is the track became quite slippery due to the light rain and this could've happened to any driver.

I am even not sure if Hamilton would have won this race if he passed Alonso earlier. He catches the frontrunners Vettel and Ocon pretty fast but than he would've lost again 2-3 laps each until he could overtake. He might get Vettel but I actually don't think he would have got both.
