Kim Yongsun (& Mamamoo in general) has broken standard after standard of how a woman, especially in Asia, should behave, look and speak. I find female Korean idols are meant to fit a certain mold: mostly sweet or sexy. They are soft-spoken, gentle and innocent. If they are not this, then they are either used as the joke or given negative personas (scary, bossy, etc). The reason I fell into the Mamamoo rabbithole was because I love music, and I love people who love music. It is rare that a female idol is shown as knowledgable & passionate about their craft. Mamamoo oozes talent that is undeniable. While they could have stopped there and become known as just a group of good singers. They continually choose to walk the rocky path. Solar: ripping off her shirt during her concert; talking about FGM; having drag queens in her mv; showing beauty in all its forms. Moonbyul: wearing ‘masculine’ clothing; eclipse that was the first time a female idol had done such a ‘masc’ concept; hosting a radio show with several male guests. Hwasa: creating new beauty standards; wearing ‘revealing’ outfits; but also showcasing that a woman lives like anybody else on ila. Wheein: doesn’t do what she’s not comfortable with; had a music video with prominent LGBTQ+ themes; is an artist through and through. After recently watching their boss in the mirror episodes, I realised that Mamamoo understands they will receive criticism and hate for the choices they make. The way Solar calmly reacted to jokes targeted at their appearance or professionalism, showed she was used to it. These women clawed their way up because of their drive for music. From their families, to friends, to the entertainment industry itself- they all spat in their faces. Yet they kept going, because that’s the type of love they have. I understand why female idols do aegyo; act childish; and act as if they don’t swear; shit or know about sex. I’m not hating on them, and business is business. But understand, Mamamoo is showcasing women as they are meant to be seen: as people- adults with opinions, thoughts and ideas. People who have different sides to them; people who are ever changing. I don’t look at them and think: ‘oh, I wish I was her’ I think: ‘I wish I could be myself like her’.
