McLaren took a big gamble dumping Daniel Ricciardo to controversially sign rookie Oscar Piastri as his Formula 1 replacement. Now, it’s more convinced than ever that Piastri is on a path to becoming one of F1’s best drivers.

I disagree. If he had joined Alpine last year, he would just be a highly promising rookie that would likely beat Ocon whereas now he's got a lot of "ring rust" & the unnecessary hassle of having a reputation of turning down two F1 teams in order to sign for McLaren.

It’s weird how McLaren signing a driver who was out of contract as ‘controversial’. It’s only controversial because alpine are acting like an ex who was given all the warnings and still acted surprised when they got dumped (Webber and the team had repeatedly asked for contract talks and something more than the ‘we agree to sort a contract for you’ which alpine thought was a contract)

Alpine (Renault) has had sooooo many junior drivers, and none of them made it to the grid. Their current lineup is a former Red Bull junior and former Mercedes junior. Hubert (rip) was probably in with the best shot because he was flying in his 1st season in F2, and grew up around Leclerc/Gasly and they even rated him very highly, but other than him... Zhou is the only one who's made it and he's not even in the team and Alfa (Sauber) has him in for $ reasons. He's gone as soon as Audi takeover fully, most likely.

The McLaren *will* get better as the year goes on. Will it be good enough to challenge Aston or even Renault? Probably not, but we'll have a better picture then how he fairs compared to Lando. If Lando is getting like 8th or 9th and he's down in 15th, that's not great. But it could be vice versa and he's outpacing Lando (though prob not realistic), or they could be 9th/10th. When the car is slow, its really "can we beat the Williams and Alfas", so its not a great picture. Its why it took until Mick getting KMag as his teammate to show how far off the pace he was, because he looked amazing next to Mazepin.

The drama gets more attention than the reality. The reality is DR wasn't a good fit for the car and sometimes that happens. It could be in conjunction with him not being as quick of a driver, it could not be. There's a mllion reasons things can go wrong, or right, for a driver in F1. Trying to place the blame or the praise solely on one aspect isn't considering the full picture. Same thing with Piastri. He got a P8 in Australia, but if it wasn't such a shit show of a race he might not have. Previously, Riccardo drove Renault engines, and I wonder if different behaviours between the Renault and Mercedes responses tripped up Ricardo, especially with his late breaking techniques. I also wonder if the fact that Riccardo is noticeably taller than most other drivers and while Red Bull had experience with that with Mark Webber also being tall, and Renault seemed fine, but it might be possible that McLaren just never got it right for him, affecting his feel for and thus control of the car.
@davestagner
@davestagner Жыл бұрын
I think more likely it was front end behavior. Remember his “last of the late brakers” motto? He has a very distinctive driving style when it comes to cornering, which made him very fast and capable of incredible overtakes - but it also depended on the car behaving a certain way under load. I figure the Maclarens he drove just didn’t behave the same as the Red Bulls and Renaults he’d been in before, and he couldn’t find a way to drive them comfortably. Which suggests to me that he might do really well and look like the Danny Ric of old if/when he drives the current Red Bull. Obviously, that car is tuned to Max Verstappen’s distinctive driving style, but Max and Danny seem to want similar things from a car. I suspect Lewis Hamilton is having similar problems adapting to the current Mercedes, although obviously not to the same degree (he’s still getting 98% of what that admittedly bad car can deliver). His complaints are much deeper than just porpoising. The overly forward seating position and stiff-but-loose rear end are driving him nuts. George Russell is obviously more comfortable with the car’s quirks, and that could be simply a matter of style suits the driver, too.

I mean Norris drove Renault before and started with the Mercedes the same year than Ricciardo. So with 9 year more experience he should have done better. Or maybe he isn't just that good. Also, he isn't that tall and I don't think that makes a difference. McLaren tried a lot to help him, it just didn't work. I don't think it was that he suddenly couldn't drive anymore. It was most likley a confidence problem. He came in this team thinking he'd have Norris easily in his back, like most people did. Must have been quite a shock for him. Then the pressure gets higher and he couldn't handle it.

What do you mean that McLaren is "down force light"? From the data I saw from Australia, McLaren was fastest of anybody in the slow corners, second only to Red Bull in fast corners, and slowest of everybody on the straights. If anything that seems to me to be "down force heavy". Seems they have waaaaay too much drag

McLaren have had a nightmare start, incredibly lucky to score points at the last race. Yes I know James Key got the bullet and the company has restructured but… If I was a shareholder I would be asking some serious questions as to why the team is going backwards again, or why McLaren’s development seems to be so far behind the front runners???

The big point is Ricciardo was employed as the senior driver to give feedback on the car in regards to Redbull and Renault, they then ignored his feedback because Lando was adjusting his driving style to make the best of a crap car as against Daniel saying it needs to be able to do x, I'm not changing my style to make a piece of junk look good.

That’s what great drivers do, they squeeze the absolute most out of the car they are given. Sure, some cars are bad and need improvement based on driver feedback, but it’s still up to the driver to do what they can. Imagine if Russell had simply said “this car is trash” and not pushed the most he could out of the Williams. He would probably never have made it to Mercedes.
@jackdiesel3067
@jackdiesel3067 Жыл бұрын
@@javierplays9516 both arguments do have merit. It is possible and somewhat likely that development of the car favored lando, as he was (and still is) the number one driver. It’s also true that riccardo didn’t adapt well to the mclaren and fell behind his teammate. As far as him taking the fall for lacking performance, I think that it has to do with securing a drive in the future. Teams would more likely sign a good driver who had a couple bad seasons versus one that’s gonna turn around and shit talk the team’s performance.

Piastri is undoubtedly a good driver, not yet a proven winner like Daniel is. I feel he made a colossal mistake signing with McLaren, if he wants any chance of success. I still remember the McLaren (Senna, Prost) of old, sadly in reality, McLaren are only also-ran backmarkers now. If he doesn't make a mess out it, by trying to be hero with a zero car, he could score a ride with a winng team when his contract expires.

Now, I agree that Piastri should be on the gird, an excellent driver. But am really annoyed with this constant attack on Dan. Dan had to adjust to a new car going from Reno to McLaren in 2021, then adjust again to another new car in 2022. Lando already had a lot more time in the car so was able to make the smaller adjustments required. And the fact that McLaren had decided in Nov 2021 to get Piastri and dump Dan. McLaren did nothing to help Dan in 2022 and actually wrecked a few of his races with poor pit calls and tire choices. McLaren only improved Lando's car in 2022 so it gave them a good reason to dump Dan. Remember, after just 2 races in 2022, Zach was already bagging Dan. That is because the deal with Piastri had been done.

This is utterly ridiculous, Mclaren is blowing its own horns. They think we don't see that they are doing even worse than last year. It is not like Piastri is driving at Norris level of last year, he is driving at Danny Ric's level if not less and Norris fell down to it too. Both Norris and Piastri deserve better. The car is more of a tractor than last year. Everyone is talking about drivers while the team's troubles are in management with Zak who is unfit to manage an f1 team, slaping stickers on the car is not enough, and in a subpar engineering. Aston Martin's performance showed that and mercedes struggles show it too. They need to stop throwing shades at Danny Ric and go to work, he is gone, and they are still blaming him! 😁

Lando was coasting with Ricciardo as a teammate. Danny was not pushing Norris to be better, and the car is terrible, so Lando wasn't really expected to do much better.
