Great video ! As a Painter for 35 years , using all contractor brands, Dunn Edwards, Sherwin Williams, PPG ...... , I am very impressed with Behr, I enjoy using it. Great coverage and flow . There’s always going to be some deep base colors that will be hard to cover, especially in eggshell or satin. You will need to change application methods for this to avoid multiple coats . Either fog coat with a sprayer until covered, or use a medium base similar color in flat as a primer . Make sure you know your customers colors before pricing, and adjust accordingly . Paint products are continually improving every year to improve usage and durability which is great 👍

Would you redo this test with colors that are commonly used? Like off whites and light greys over darker colors. How often are people actually painting their interiors with primary colors?
@waltsreviews904 жыл бұрын
Hi Brad, Yes I will. I only chose those colors because usually they are the hardest to cover. However, I will be making another video using common colors like white and grey, I also going to use colors that are not part of the Marquee one coat coverage. I had some painter use a couple Marquee one coat colors and they claimed it didn't cover in one coat, so I am going to test those to see if they were correct. I am also going to make a video seeing how each paint does for stuff like cleaning stains and scuffs.

I just finally decided to paint over the original contractor paint(agreeable gray) in my house (7 years old), because we were going to host an Open House to celebrate my daughter’s High School graduation. SW was running a 30% off sale so tried their Emerald on several of my walls and it was truly amazing. The self-leveling for satin finish worked perfectly. Received several comments from guests on how good my walls looked and some were shocked that it wasn’t professionally painted. Emerald is a game changer for DIY-ers! Note: I’ve never tried Behr Marquee so can’t comment on that.

I just painted my homes entire interior with SW Emerald. Every single color required 2 coats. When I complained to SW, they told me their paint is a 2 coat system- and 2 coats are even required for the warranty. I have always used Behr Ultra and it has always covered in 1 coat. If Behr doesn’t cover in 1 coat, Home Depot will give the paint needed for a second coat for free.

I'm a painter for 22 years I've never only done 1 coat unless it is a re-paint of the same color. Even marquee I use 2 coats. It covers about 85% in 1 coat. Unfair test really as far as apples to apples. Unfortunate the SW store used ultradeep base as thats a clear paint with just pigments for hide. Sherwin-Williams in emerald makes a red and yellow base specifically for these colors which is what should have been used. Also as far as not matching the blue it should have been able to been done in Emerald Designer edition. I challenge you to go back to a sw store, get sw colors made specifically in yellow and red base, compare them to the competitors matching. For your blue use blue blood or hyper blue and have it made in the Emerald Designer edition, NOT baseline Emerald or Duration. You might get the same results but it would be interesting to see when other companies have to match SW. Also, use a marathon roller cover. Thanks for the video!

The roller always has good coverage. The proof would be in the cut in, and that is the part that takes the longest. The behr is the worst for cut in and painting. It is too thick and sticky for me and does not flow off a brush like Duration or regal products that are thinner but have a lot of pigment. Putting on 2 coats gives the best finish in any paint. If I need to go over a red with a beige I just prime and then use super paint paint/primer over that it will need 2 cut in coats of any paint you chose. The only time you do not need 2 cut in coats is if painting similar or same color over the wall.

I agree two coats is a good idea no matter what paint or coverage you get. We have had mixed results with the other Behr lines like the ultra and premium and the pro series, and in many cases we didn't get coverage full coverage with 2 coats. Thats why the Marquee surprised me. I did another video about coverage and cutting in on my other channel here is a link to it kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3eUdJKgiqeIhZo I think for a DYI homeowner since they don't paint everyday everything is going to be hard for them, and only doing 2 coats instead of 3 coats ( like your 1 prime and 2 coats paint example) might be easier and save them time. I also made another video where I tested 1 vs 2 coats for cleaniblility and was shocked. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYPVnXmjqLx1d6c. Duration, Emerald, Cashmere, Super Paint, even the Pro Mar lines all great paints, and if they help you with application then for you they are the best choice, I mainly wanted to test and see if the 1 coat coverage was true. I am curious when you talk about cutting in with Behr, were you talking about Marquee or one of the other Behr lines?
@waltsreviews903 жыл бұрын
We have used other Behr products and had issue with really poor coverage, is this the same issue you had with the bad cut ins? or was it something else? That is why the Marquee surprised me, all the other Behr products we tried was bad experience.

Boom Stick on walls? They will all be about the same. Touching up with Behr is easier too- used it a lot in commercial spaces as well. On cabinets and air spraying... SW will have more durability over Benjamin moore advanced but BM advanced has a better finish. In the end, if it’s going on wood.... to many factors in prep to full determine which is better. Stick with better paints instead of SW and BM. If it’s interior walls... behr will be most bang for your buck
@goodlife15004 жыл бұрын
What I will say is if you do the prep work and if you’re a paint you’ll know what I mean.... use a quality primer first any paint or most paints over let’s say $35 will be good. The problem is people are expecting the brand name paints to perform miracles. Over the years I’ve seen expensive paints look like shit when applied with no prep, and I’ve seen inexpensive paint applied with good prep look amazing. Take what you will from it.

@waltsreviews902 жыл бұрын
If I'm understanding you correctly, I think it would look the same for the coats that covered in one coat. For the paints that didn't quite cover in one coat, I think that they would look different. It would bring out the full color and uniformity. I guess for this video, I really wanted to test how well the one coat application worked because that's what the paints are advertised as. And as a painting business owner, its great to test products before I use them for clients.
@scottmcauley57812 жыл бұрын
@@waltsreviews90 I totally understand and agree with the tests you did an how you wanted to show the one coat coverage, which I think you did a great job. Clearly was consice an to the point demonstrating these paints and their claims! I also own a painting company an right now on my job the home owner first attempted his project himself buying the very expensive Aura paint.. obviously because his thoughts were sold on by the paint store selling him on it would be less work with the one coat.. now I always price my jobs on premium paints but honestly the price point on costs are half the cost of the Aura . I've used the Behr for my personal home and I honestly was surprised how much I liked it.. I told the home owner that In my opinion , Behr Marque would do his job with the same quality as the Aura because wether I used Aura , Behr or any other Benjamin Moore paints my plan was always to do the 2 coats, then the sanding Inbetween , last apply my second coat. I've never used the Aura paint but I've used all other lines of Benjamin Moore an other equals! I've always done the 2 coats because I've always been under the impression to get complete coverage an uniformity , you need to do 2 coats! In the past I've cut in and rolled out walls wet on wet and gotten away with one coat, but almost always have had to do the 2. The surprise I got was after my bid then the signing of contract the surprise of could I use this Aura paint because he's already bought 5 gallons , wall paint. Now always wanting to be at the forefront in business, if there's a paint that I can only do one coat and it honestly is an equal to the two coats , I'm wanting to be there! Less work more profit an quicker turnovers! I guess my real thoughts would be if I do this one coat, then later down the road , homeowner does a touch up! Will this flash ? I've always known that after 2 coats when touch ups are applied it's fine! So my question asked about if the one coat paint brought out the full uniformity as the 2 coats because of this thought! Now I've no problems using what ever quality paints the home owner wants as long as my job doesn't get harder! But obviously if it can get easier I'd use the Aura as long as it fits in with what I've said! My price would reflect the higher paint cost. With Aura at the price it is ! My thoughts of already liking the behr if I could do the jobs cutting out a whole step ! Getting (2 coat) coverage by only doing one, I'll do this for the Owner as long as my prices have reflected the different paint costs$$$

I suspect that if you had taken the other brands deep base paints to Home Depot and had the Behr Marquee formula shot into them, they would have performed equally to the Behr.

Thanks for the informative video. Speaking of coverage what would you recommend for a interior PRIMER type and product to paint over a red brick fireplace with black mortar? Thank you.

I was impressed with the marquee from this video but I’m not sure this is a genuine test. I say that because you specifically used marquee colors over marquee colors, so it’s not surprising that it performed the way it did. I wonder if the coverage of marquee would really be comparable to the Aura when using marquee over a non marquee color. Overall, definitely better than I expected with Behr.
@waltsreviews902 жыл бұрын
That's an interesting perspective from the testing point of view. I wouldn't imagine that it makes much of a difference on the type of paint you are covering expect with regards to the type of base paint. for example, is it a clear or white base paint... But great question, maybe I'll tackle it down the road at some point!

I don't put any stock in consumer reports. Everyone just buys home depot paint because it's a one stop shop.
@waltsreviews902 жыл бұрын
That's definitely a fair point to make. It's a lot easier to get everything in one store rather than making multiple stops. Also why I did this test, to see if consumer reports were accurate.

I just watched your video. Nice video by the way. I might have missed it, but what finish or sheens were you using and what was the finish/ sheen that you painted over.In my experience with painting and paints, is that the sheen of the wall to be painted affected the coverage if the new color being applied.For example,I've painted for customers that had a satin or semi-gloss through most of the home, and wanted an eggshell finish.I wanted to prime the semi-gloss first, then apply the eggshell paint, but the customer didn't want to pay for extra primer application and labor and wanted to use a Glidden premium paint and primer instead to save money and it didn't cover after two coats.the customer was disappointed and didn't want to pay for a third coat.So that job didn't go well.They picked the paint, the sheen and assured the glidden premium would cover in one coat, but it didn't.I did a second coat on my time and dollar , but would not do a third coat for free.Sorry for the long story, but I'm not sold on the paint and primer products at all but based on this video, I will be trying the behr marquee.It looks like it's the way to go.

The Behr Marquee is indeed great paint. Been a painter for almost 25 years.....there is one caveat....it is very thick. That i believe is the reason it covers better. Its much thicker than the other paints, and while the coverage is better, you will be spending much more money for your paint. Not a big deal repainting an accent wall or small room, but when doing an entire apartment or home it can be very costly, and sometimes even with that paint you will need two coats anyway, so might as well get the less expensive paint, the end result will be the same. Also as a professional painter gripe/tip to everyone....do not ever use flat paint. Its horrible to apply, looks like shit, doesnt clean well, holds dirt, its just junk in my opinion. Use Satin for most applications, interior and exterior. Use Semi gloss in kitchens and bathrooms, it deals with moisture much better and cleans very easily usually with just warm water. Trim can be satin, semi gloss or high gloss. Looks great one sheen brighter than wall color.

I see that anything labeled “ceiling paint” appears to be very flat or matte. Is it best to paint ceilings with this sheen?
@justindearmond13 жыл бұрын
@@GorlockSlayer i would say yes...only because its cheap and most flat paints will blend in better. say you paint with behr paint and in 2 years you need to touch up...you can do that with virtually any other brand flat paint as long as colors are a decent match. Some contractor wont even paint the ceilings after they have been textured/stomped. (or they will just use the primer coat and call it good) The drywall mud dries a nice white color....is it a dick move? yes...will most even notice it? no. This sort of thing is done on rentals/mobile homes not custom or higher end homes. Bottom line is you wont be scrubbing your ceilings so you dont need a sheen to assist with that. On the other hand if you want more light reflection then you can paint them with a satin or semi gloss. Virtually all ceiling paint is flat.

Bahr being thick paint offers very good coverage. I am not a pro so I find it very difficult to use it. Sherwin Williams Super Paint and Duration have been my favorites and I will never ever use Sherwin Williams Emerald again. Its all hype. You have to do 2 coats and in some cases I could still see it through. Sure vendor will say I should have done primer on the wall but that is a lot of work (3 coats).
@powerhouse61653 жыл бұрын
Emerald isn't supposed to be 1 coat. None of the Sherwin Williams wall paints are supposed to be 1 coat, whoever told you it was is in error.
@faisal-ca3 жыл бұрын
@@powerhouse6165 SW never claimed any of their paints to be 1 coat. I was sharing my very personal experience. In many cases when both colors were close by, I got away with 1 coat. Emerald was very thin and I had to do two coats and in some cases even 3rd. Emerald also gave me lines after drying out (if see from the side). I may try Emerald's matte finish next time but so far Super Paint and Durations have proven themselves.

Behr is what contractors love to hate. Consumers know the name well. That's more important. Nobody wants to admit it, but one coat of Premium Plus is what is used in rentals 70% of the time.

From actual use of the product the marquee exterior is definitely not as good as Behr ultra. I would stick with ultra or premium plus in the Behr line or duration in Sherwin Williams line.

@Monarchski3 жыл бұрын
Good info but something you have to consider about Behr's low pricing. They don't have paint stores, their products sit inside a Home Depot so they pay no rent. They don't have to pay a store manager, an assist manager or any other people. They have no electricity bills or any of the other expenses a traditional paint store has.
@nelsonrothermel2 жыл бұрын
The paint section takes up floor space so there is absolutely a proportion of rent, electricity and manager. Maybe it's less than a traditional paint store due to economies of scale with the larger building but it's not zero.

Marquee is like painting with glue. It takes 5 times the paint of other companies, and the texture can be very inconsistent because the paint is so thick.

I totally agree.The hide with marquee is the best but to work with it all day is a workout.Good for someone who paints one room occasionally.The finish isn’t great except for in matte.
You made a major mistake. Sherwin-Williams duration requires a nylon napped roller. If you had used one the coverage would have been excellent. Next time make sure you get the proper tools before you create a critique

The biggest MISTAKE made when folks trying to cover paint, is the color itself! Lets say you try and cover a deep red with Blues, the red tint will always come through and you'll have a purple. If you are trying to cover a deep blue with say a green paint, the Blue is going to come through, and you'll have a crappy brown tone....If you are going to be painting over a mid tone, or especially a deep tone color, USE A PRIMER, such as Kilz, or Bulls Eye 123. I actually prefer the solvent based primer, it will BLOCK OUT any color, stain, or mark, from coming through...another tip for using Solvent based primer; is to use it over WALL PAPER!! This will lock the paper to the surface underneath..If you use a water based primer, you are F*cked! It will moisture will draw the paper away from the wall, and you'll nothing but Blisters.
