Often his girlfriend is with him, but not always. I never saw him being creep. Also he's right, my girlfriend often comes back home late at night by walking of taking public transit and Montreal is pretty safe for that.

Hi Dan. In the beginning I visited for a week and stayed for two. I loved the city, the people, and the ease at which I realized I could set up a home here. I learned the Metro and found a place to live, went back to Florida, packed, and was on a plane 2 days later, and never looked back. Montreal is a beautiful city, the people, if you are kind to people, they are kind back. The biggest smile you get is at Christmas time, when you get on a bus, at Christmas time and say those 2 important words "Joyeux Noel" to a bus driver. I practice all year for that one night to begin with. It's the very best feeling in the world. I love Montreal. Thanks for the video Dan.

how long did it take you to learn french?

@@Ace21kg It took me about a year or so. My partner speaks French. I also used the "Learn French by Metro and Bus" My reading comprehension is better than my conversational French. Since Covid, we don't get out much at all. So language skills are stunted to say the least. I also took 3 level units of French at Concordia and Dawson. After 3 units I could not handle the pressure, so I bailed on university language classes. Now I stick to what I do every day to supplement my skills. Always use French in shops and transportation. Even if you don't speak it well, it is the attempt that matters. At least you tried right?

@@DCT876 Hey. Rents are affordable, if you have lived somewhere long enough that the 3% rule has not driven your rent high sky. If you are coming off the street or moving to a new building, (Which people are doing right now - July 1st is moving day in Quebec) Rents can be extremely expensive, sending folks onto the streets because they cannot afford the rent. We pay $950.00 p/mo. Our rent raise starts in July 2022 - Jun 2023. We can still afford the rent here because we have lived here +20yrs. Quebec has the 3% rule. rents cannot be raised more than 3% each year. Summers are nice, but over the past five to seven years it has gotten much hotter than usual. And many people died because apt's don't have central air or air for that matter, we only have heat. So unless you can buy and hang a unit in your apt, you are shit out of luck. I don't think there are many cons, I mean we get by well. Pandemic was a bitch but what can you do? We live in a central area close to all the necessary amenities and Metro stations. So that's all good. Hope that helps.

I agree with Carl. I haven’t been in awhile, but used to spend a lot of time in Montréal. Walking alone, even late at night, I always felt safe. I only had one negative experience with a guy following me, but told the guy to get lost and he left. I travel to many other cities and countries routinely and Montréal is one of the safest places I’ve spent time in.

I love the laissez-faire attitude people here have towards others, they don't judge you for being different. They're very open, and they love trying out/experiencing new things (they're more willing to go out of their comfort zone), and learning about other cultures while being proud of their own. I've been to many places around the world, but I've never quite met people like them, they're a unique people (in a positive way of course :))

I'm a tourist myself. What I love: The people, the architecture, the variety of food, being able to practice my French with total strangers as well as friends. I love to blend in and look and act like I live in Montreal already, and NOT look or act like a typical tourist! What I hate: The harsh winters, the construction!

(I’ve lived in Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal & currently living in Québec City but I’m from a region near Montreal) What I love the most about Montreal is, it’s alive, every corner you turn there’s music, kids playing, people eating at a nice restaurant outside, there’s bikes & parcs everywhere. What I hate would be North Montreal, a real ghetto, getting really violent recently with gang shootings nearly every day & cops getting attacked

Soooooo... I'm going to fact check myself here. I was caught a bit off guard walking home, indeed, and it's always a risky thing to answer someone right off the bat, something that by the way I would never do either in writing or even during a longer conversation if we had met at a party or any other casual gathering! Alors! According to the Wikipedia page I was thinking of (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_North_American_cities_by_population), based on municipal censuses, Montréal was in fact ranked the 8th biggest North American city by population, but that number change if you consider the total urban agglomeration and not just the city itself, then also the page, I realize now, is using numbers from 2015 and more recent data have tossed the position of the city somewhere between 10th and 13th. Next and more importantly, the TV news report I was referencing when I talked about Chicago was about the number of homicides in the total month of January being every year bigger than the number of homicides in the total year in Montréal, and not the first hour of the first day (of course!!!)! I am so sorry about that, really, I can't stress enough I sorry I am for saying those things so quickly without at least getting the facts straight by consulting my phone before agreeing to be on camera, something we should always do. I hope you all pardon me. Finally, it was clumsy of me to talk about crime rates when the safe side I had in mind, based on dozens of stories shared by girl friends, was more about a psychological on-your-guard mindset they can turn down a great couple of notches when they come back in Montréal (sorry France, but it's bad!). Sorry again, dear friends and viewers, I swear I will never again drop stats without make sure beforehand that they are the right ones. Love to all. Cheers, Dan!

I'm a born and raised Montrealer who has been living in Toronto since 2010, but now with changed circumstances we're looking to move back at some point. It's amazing to me how much I miss my hometown, but I only realized it when I decided I'm going back. It's like I refused to admit it to myself while living away. Interesting how the mind works - how we can convince ourselves or create blind-spots as needed. in order to cope with our reality. When I felt compelled to leave back in 2010, I did a great job reminding myself of all the things that drove me crazy about MTL and Quebec in general, and now that I'm ready to come home all I see are the things I love about the place. An annoying byproduct of this is that now the reverse is happening for me with Toronto/Ontario... Love your videos and enthusiasm, by the way. Also, your french is absolutely fine! There's no reason to feel self-conscious at all, so continue to use it whenever you want to.

One thing I have to say about the way people (especially locals) react to your videos is that the vast majority of us are really happy to get some positive representation every once in a while. We hear a lot of people from the outside as well as the media badmouth us constantly, and portray us as if we were just a bunch of uneducated lowlives or corrupt racists who spend their welfare money on Pepsi, Labbat Blue, poutine and Joe Louis. I think the work you do here on KZbin is really useful at breaking down these negative stereotypes, and speaking only for myself, I'm very grateful for the positive exposure you give us. Now, to answer your initial question: 1) Thing I love: The food scene. You can get just about every type of food in Montreal, and you can get either the cheap, mid-range or fancy version of it. And you usually get a local twist on it (shoutout to my local Punjabi pizzeria and their Butter Chicken Pizza!). I have spent quite a few years in Ontario, and that might be just me not knowing where to go, but I never could find decent Indian, Greek, Portuguese or Vietnamese in that province (but I'll give it to ON, I've had better Chinese and Japanese over there). 2) Thing I hate: How unprepared public transit is for winter (Every. Single. Winter.) I'm sorry, but this is Quebec-Canada. Snow is not an excuse for buses to be cancelled. This is not France, or Spain, or New York. We have winter tires and snow plowers. Starting mid-October, they need to be aware that it can snow at any time, and they should prepare in consequence. It's like the STM was allergic to the Weather Channel, I swear.

I'm about to visit Montreal for the third time in 10 days and I've never heard anything negative about Montrealers. I did here that the Quebecois overall aren't fans of those who only speak English prior to arrival, but I didn't experience that AT ALL. Everyone is friendly, the city is beautiful and if not for the snow, I would consider moving to your city.

What I love is the laid back vibe overall...and the food :-) Construction is annoying, but I don't drive so it doesn't bother me that much. What really bothers me is the littering! I have to constantly watch over my dog when I walk him to make sure he doesn't pick up something gross from the ground. Use the garbage cans, people!

When I first visited from Toronto, immediately fell in love. I've been all over Canada, but personally Montreal is my favourite place. Lots of public spaces, fun people, and the city is generally beautiful. Every so often I consider learning french and moving over

I'm from Cornwall, ON. I've lived in Toronto for 11 years. I'm an actor, drove for the TTC, Uber and worked in the hospitality industry. I currently live in Vancouver for 24 years. Again, I'm an actor, drove for the city bus company out here (CMBC) for eight years, Uber and worked in the hospitality industry. In December, to be closer to my family, I will be moving to Montreal. Growing up in Cornwall, I've spent a lot of time in Montreal. I look forward to driving for Uber and continue my passion for acting. J'aime Montreal! ❤ I also like your channel. I love the size of Montreal. I have lived in large cities like New York, Istanbul and honestly, after that, when I moved here I felt like I finally found a type of place that I like to spend my life in. You can reach anywhere max in 30-40 mins within the island. Public transportation works pretty well. Social life is great and diverse, you can find many things to do in the city. Also at the weekends, you can easily drive the regions outside of Montreal for hiking, swimming, biking, spending time in nature etc. But the winter! That is sooooo LONG!!

I agree with you . Montreal is a big city but it feels small since all 19 boroughs are built for humans ... parks , convenience and quality of life ... In order to enjoy winter , you need to be active .. At least mother nature is pretty balanced here .

@@alrickmagnin3226 Parce que vous venez ici en ne comprenant rien du Québec. Defois, j’ai l’impression qu’un tunisien ou un marocain comprend mieux la vie ici. Les français qui viennent à Montréal sont souvent ceux qui admirent l’Amérique et les USA et qui croient que le mode de vie québécois et pareil que celui du Canada ou des USA. C’est dommage car un frère français devrait comprendre cela. Vous devez comprendre que Montréal et le Québec sont distincts et qu’il faut embrasser cette différence. Enfin, je parle d’expérience car la plupart des français en dehors de Montréal s’intègrent très bien. Ps: j’aime les français, je suis seulement déçu qu’à Montréal les semblent différentes

I like how well the public transit works, the different neighbourhoods that you have been highlighting, Mount-Royal, unique places like the Orange Julep and more. I'm not too bothered by the constant construction as I don't have a car. I guess one thing I don't like is, especially in winter, the few people that still smoke, being in small groups just outside of entrances to buildings smoking; so that when I have to enter/exit I have to pass through them.

What I hate about Montreal? The fact that it's becoming more English as years go by. We're slowly going back to the days of the 1950s, when the french-speakers were second-class citizens in their own city and province.

Great video! I'm from Quebec city but I often come to Montreal and this video is very accurate! The people are great and the construction is very annoying. It's a very beautiful city but there is a lot of trash. It's a wonderful eclectic city.

Hi, I lived there for 30 years and I cant live anywhere else. It has a soul, its lively. People may seem standoffish, but if you talk to them, they will be more than happy to help you. There is always something to do, and you can walk easily from one borough to the next and get a totally different vibe in each one. You cant stay at home when you live in Montreal, even after people finish work, they often go out with friends or colleagues to eat or have a few drinks. The cons, the transit drivers are usually pretty grumpy! It is also a very multicultural city, but I wish more immigrants would immerse themselves in the French culture of Quebec. Oh ya, one last thing, Montreal is great for people and fashion watching, people are so individual when it comes to fashion, they wear things their own way , and it often looks great!

Hi, I am living in Montreal for more than a month now and I am in love with the city! It is vibrant, colorful and the buildings and murals are gorgeous! I just love the metro system which gets me anywhere in about an hour without any hassle, and the people here are beautiful and kind! The only thing I don't like is the construction works going on almost everywhere. One thing I wanna know is in which neighborhood you shot this video? Wanna visit there sometimes!

Just returned from a visit. It was really sad, half the businesses had gone out of business due to COVID. I'd find a restaurant that looked interesting, only to come closer and realize it is now just an empty storefront. But for those of us who are fans of French culture, there are French comics and French cinema (without subtitles!) It's clean and quiet compared to other metropolises. There is amazing street art everywhere. People were friendly.

I just came back from Montreal yesterday I agree that Montreal is very safe. I left the arbnb to catch the bus 747 to YUL airport at 4:30am, it was very safe. the Metro and bus are awesome they get me to everywhere in the city.

Something I love is all the green we have. Plants on people’s fronts, parks (Lafontaine, Mont-Royal, Maisonneuve, Laurier, Jarry, Bellerive, Canal Lachine and many more neighbourhood one) and generally a lot of trees, which I realized travelling, is quite rare. Something I hate, well, it’s gonna sound cliché, but I hate all the orange cones. One cannot expect driving (or heck, even walking!) without encoutering at least one construction detour, if not many many more. Edit: I wrote this comment before watching and these darn orange signs really make unanimity 🤣🤦🏻‍♂️

What I love is : the métro which runs under the St-Laurent river to connect with the south shore . What I hate is that the line stops in Longueuil and no one can come with the money to add a few stations . ( 1966 to 2022 is a long wait ! )

What I like the most: diversity. We have people from Haiti, Italy, Portugal, Greece Vietnam, China, North Africa, Honduras and many more! Many people speak more than one language and I feel this great. Just the fact that we speak French in North America is great! What I don't like: the never ending constructions...

As a tourist... I love the staircases and St Viateur Bagels and the metro system....so easy to get around as it is also very walkable. Hate?? DRIVING HERE ... that tunnel under downtown is NOT FUN but it speeds things up and the streets are so narrow with parking on both sides as I am not used to parallel parking or this much construction!!

I love the people in Montreal. They remind me of people from Oregon in the U.S. and are very unique and diverse. I also love the Montreal metro system and how safe the city is and there is a cafe and terrasse culture. I hate how there are no water stations to refill reusable water bottles
