I love the videos but I always wish the subtitles weren't burn in and were just CC tracks on youtube so I could turn them on/off etc. If English words are on the screen my brain can't help but read them so I have to hold my hand up to block them!

I feel you but that's the format for all channels of the Easy Languages project. You can always rewatch and force yourself to look at the Chinese subtitles only, or better yet join their membership and get the Chinese-only transcript to follow along with the audio ;)

The English translation does not follow the Chinese text: "ting dao" - heard, in English - you translate as "When I was told". There is no "when", no "I", and no "told/tell" in the Chinese text. Rather than providing an explanation your method causes a confusion; you are sabotaging your own efforts. Why ?

Relax, the translation is never literal but context dependent, especially in a language like Chinese, the meaning of the exact same expression can wildly vary for different contexts. I am by no means an expert Chinese linguist or anything, but as far as I could tell I haven't seen anything off with the translations in this episode.
