In this video, I go over the pros and cons of these battery-operated, portable flash photography studio lighting kits: The E640 Einstein Flash Kit from Paul C. Buff, the Profoto B1, and the Broncolor Move 1200L. Specific links to each piece of gear can be found at: www.learnfromj...
Buying your first strobe kit is a serious investment, so I've designed this tutorial to help first-time buyers, and buyers looking to upgrade their gear, better wrap their heads around the complexities of such a niche market.
I am not loyal to any specific brand. In this video, you will see Frankenstein-like creations of lighting kits made from many different pieces. The quality of equipment is much more important than the name that's written on it, so I'm only including gear that I have actually used in the past and that I know to be good.
Tutorial filmed by Jared Levy and edited by James Daniel and Caleb Adams.

I was heavily influenced by this video five years ago and decided to purchase Broncolor Move L and Siros L systems, with a Para 133. Probably the best photography equipment decisions I've ever made! Thanks Joey for helping me make that decision!

Pro-tip. I learned on a set of mobilites over 10 years ago that it's easier to mount the head to the modifier. So if it's like a softbox and a speed ring, build the softbox, throw it face first on the floor, and then mount the light. Then mount the entire head and lamp on the lightstand, problem solved. Since then this totally works for every head mounted modifier I've used. Obviously stuff like Settis or Sollos where they mount on a stand first, it doesn't really matter when you mount the head since it's not bearing any weight besides itself. But yea, I think the B1 wins over the other setups just for the merits of HSS and being able to have a seemingly more powerful light when the sun's out. Notes: * The dood mentioning the "green" cast on the Broncolor Move was probably referring to the LED modeling light which does run "green" in reality in addition to the anti-UV glass dome on the head. * The price on b&h was chosen because of the Euro/GBP conversion vs VAT included/not included prices, plus USA discount (because we get everything cheaper). So yeah, kinda weird. But you're pretty spot on with this gear. At 2015, we're starting to get some features we *should* have seen back in 2008. It's funny how packs and lights haven't evolved much until PocketWizard came out with the FlexTTL series stuff, and then we start seeing interesting options. Profoto's AcuteB system, Hensel w/ remote power control in 2007. Elinchrom and Profoto coming out with their Skyport and Air system shortly thereafter. Lithium batteries for flashes, Hensel Freemask, PW's FlexTTL series stuff. Then boom in the past year, Profoto B1 TTL, Jinbei HD-600 HSS, Broncolor Siros w/ HSS, Profoto B2 TTL HSS. What's next for tomorrow?

Tip from photoassistant. Put the octabank up side down on a clean surface (preferably plastic sheet) and then put in your light. That way you'll never have a heartattack again when doing a switch, especially on the broncolor ones.

Thanks JL. A great explanation -- straight forward, informed, clear, unbiased. Cuts through so much internet dross. I use Elinchrom (Ranger), mainly because here in Oz it's everywhere, and kits from ProFoto are more expensive, and we don't have Paul C Buff. I was inspired to get into portable strobes after seeing your beautiful shots of the Mentawai some years ago. Since then you have added so much beautiful work, like the awesome Peshmerga series, which is photojournalism raised to the level of art. Keep on clicking, man!

...and, the advice on c-stands is really good! I recently got one and dunno why I did not get one sooner! But (there is a but!) carrying a c-stand on aircraft is not practical and so I'll keep travelling with flimsier, lighter stands. For the same reason I use 400 ws Elinchrom Rangers with Elinchrom's smaller light mods. Air travel is a fact of life and ever-diminishing baggage allowances is a fact of life. But when going by car, then it's ok to bring the heavy stuff and the kitchen sink.

Great video. I’ve used Einsteins since 2011 and haven’t run into any problems your friend has. I keep mine in a Pelican 1654 case, but if I’m only taking 1 or 2 Einsteins with me, I’ll put them in a Think Tank roller bag. The only issues I’ve had was prematurely blowing a flash tube (sent me a new one free), and one time a flash dropped down about 6” in the light stand and broke a fuse, which I easily replaced. I’ve had a stand blow over outside in windy conditions (ran out of sandbags - this light wasn’t in use at the time) onto a marble floor and the flash didn’t break or stop working. The only time I’ve noticed inconsistencies in light output is when using Vagabonds....when plugged into a wall, they’re usually pretty consistent and always produce pleasing color temps (I shoot in Color mode). Also, the Cyber Commander setup is amazing and well worth the money - I can’t imagine using any other radio trigger (I used PocketWizards before, but it sucked). The only downside is there’s no power button for it (I just remove the batteries when I'm not using it) and you’ll start to get misfires when the batteries are on the way out. If using Vagabonds, I HIGHLY recommend the VML Bracket from Joe Jack. I would also gladly pay an extra $100 per Einstein if they had aluminum instead of plastic bodies, and had a rear handle built into them for adjusting lights. I love the softboxes/octas, but the mounting system for the parabolic umbrellas are kinda flaky/need constant attention (especially outside) - but still do the job.

I´ll agree with you! I also have used my einstein´s since 2011. The work great!! Strange that Joey dont use the Cyber Commander in this video!? I´m very happy with mine! and that was a big factor when i bought this setup. Yeah, they do use some battery, but what´s the cost of 2 AAA batteries... Love the video anyway! Love the way Joey talks about the products! I got to follow this guy! Tom

Thank you for posting this video. I found it helpful and I went with the Profoto B1 Elinchrom 39" combo and a C-stand as you suggested. Loving it! I also wanted to mention, for those of you who are students, Adorama and BHPhoto sell the Profoto B1 for $500 less if you open a student account. It saved me quite a bit on the whole setup actually. I walked away paying $2280 instead of just under $4000. And for those students who can afford Broncolor BHPhoto has amazing student discounts on Broncolor products. Thanks again!

This is a great write up. And it's not that he is advertising him self. Nor is he saying you need expensive gear. Listen to what he is saying... He is completely accurate on the quality of light. Hence why he chose what he did in his career. He then speaks of only using kits HE HAS USED. Which removes the whole "guessing" on what the quality would be like. Great video my friend.. thanks

Thanks Joey. New photographer here (and you're probably saying "Why the hell are you here?"). Obviously things have changed a bit in the last 5 years and Broncolor has added the 400/800watt mobile units. I'm here because I'm trying to become educated way before I purchase. Although I've had a camera in my hands about 2 years now, I'm starting to work with flash. I looking at your video because I want to do several things 1. work outdoors. 2. Freeze action 3. HS (Hypersync). 4. Shallow DOF use. I started playing with speedlites and HSS and you know where that took me. Buying multiple speedlites wasn't going to cut it for me. Your comparison here, while dated, helps and I appreciate someone taking the time without sponsorship to cover this. If you have a moment these days, and see this comment, tell me how you would rate the current choices. Although new, I don't want to be purchasing things several times over if possible. The Broncolor Siros 800w portable lighting would fit your power and portability requirements and would be more affordable. The question is: Where does this choice fit in with the current options and those you raised above. Appreciate your thoughts. Well done and very much appreciated.

A small but perhaps important addition: the Einstein, while plasticky and relatively fragile, has amazing action stopping speeds at medium to low power levels and is amazingly consistent, however not on the vagabond mini. I've noticed this when I first used it with the vagabond and was surprised. The vagabond mini apparently can't supply enough power to be able to shoot in a burst with the einstein and retain it's fantastic consistency as when powered by mains, you have to wait for the ready beep on the strobe, then it has the same consistency. Perhaps the new, more powerful power pack from Paul C Buff addreses this. Also there is a similar sistem to the profoto air remote called cyber commander, perhaps with more functionality (has a built in light meter) but less user friendly (the inferface is clunky).

Great video Joey! I've sold my kidneys and got 3 Profoto B1s with Mola Demi & Profoto Magnum. For those who want to move extra portable the Zoom reflector II is a great option. With the HSS upgrade the B1 has been fabulous. I just wanted to note that one other benefit of the B1 is that with TTL remote you can start off with TTL then lock the value and switch to manual, very useful feature. Finally, for those who want to keep their kidneys, the Flash Roverlight from Adorama goes for around $350 and I heard it's a decent alternative to the B1.

Sorry for maybe a dumb question but do you use only one light for everything? if it's only one, that's ok, but I was searching for a system to use with a big main light and one or 2 other not so big ones. I'm new in this lighting stuff, but as I'm seeing I can't mix different brands of light so easily. So what system to invest? Now, the most interest for me has been the godox system which can use another brand speedlights and also have the AD200 and AD600 pro which would be great for a complete, but also "portable" light set. Is there another interesting system?

Hey Joey I got another question for you. If you were to suggest a single light to start experimenting with home studio beauty shots which one would it be and why? I watched this whole video and the focus is for it to be portable basically so this will come in handy later on for me. What if I wanted to start studying beauty portraiture in a studio and don't mind dimensions because the gear will always sit here? I always shot outdoor portraits in natural lights while using some reflectors and other basic stuff only when I needed but now I'd love to explore the "indoor" side of portraiture so the portability is not an issue cause I won't shoot outside or on location unless I'm really confident I'm not wasting the model's time. I know in this case there's a gorgeous model and a gigantic light but I'm looking for something like this for my outcome /watch?v=ZtIkhvNH1X0 I have the reflectors, I have the space, I have the backdrops but I really don't know wether I should get a beauty dish or a softbox(I like the Westcott RapidBox and that's pretty affodrable at 200€ here in Italy) and expecially which brands and models are good for someone who doesn't want high end equipment for thousands of dollars but that feels he can spend more than the super cheap option which won't last long and produce bad light(oh and by the way I like the cold white ones, it's easier to warm them up from what I learned so far instead of getting a warm yellow/orange one and "cooling it" later). Hope it's clear, my english ain't the best!

One note about the PCB Einstein units: You can choose 1 of 2 modes with the unit, speed or color consistency. In the color consistency mode, you get a little longer flash duration, but you get very consistent light. In speed mode, you'll get a little less consistency, but really short flash duration ( 1/13,500 second (t.1) ) [full disclosure: I shoot with both Profoto (packs) and the Einsteins] Good tip on the stands - one of the biggest mistakes I see.

First Joey, Excellent job on the video. Overall, pretty fair and balanced. I would like to offer some different experiences. Paul Buff also makes a White Lighting system which is between the Alien Bee and Einstein. With the exception of dropping them on the ground, they haven't broken in 20 plus years. I cart them around in soft bags, card board boxes and custom cases and haven't had any damage to the controls. We use Profoto in the University Photo Studio and they break frequently, are slow and expensive to repair and I can't see any difference in light quality. Yes, they have a great mounting system for their modifiers. So at the University we are now shifting to Alien Bee's as they are much lower in cost that Profoto and last longer and are quicker to repair, when they do break and that typically is just a modeling light or flash tube. Students are notoriously hard on equipment. I ran a test on Extachrome on all my lights, (Balcar, Norman and PCB) and I couldn't find any difference in color that was visible to the eye. Sure, with Photoshop you could measure changes, but in practical application, nothing. I found much more color shift by using various modifiers of various ages, than the flash systems themselves. Now I have added Dynalite and Profoto to the lights used and while I haven't done as complete a side by side test, I still don't see any practical color shift. Also, with digital, we run a custom white balance anyway and when you are only using one system, that would take care of any red bias that you are seeing. I mix and match manufacturers on some shoots and again, more for the modifers, I do need to adjust the lights with gels, sometimes for special effects, rather than correction, but that is an available option. LOVE the Para's !

This is all great info, but as you know the video is based on my experience only. I have taken Profoto stuff all over the world in some of the world's most rugged climates and haven't had many major problems. I guess students can be a little more harsh than above the arctic circle. :-)

I would agree that the White Lightings are the most durable lights in the Buff lineup the ones I used to have had full metal cases but are very basic lights. I have a friend with Einsteins and his experience matches very closely to Joey's friend lots of button issues and a few broken screens, also if you are using the buff triggers once installed in the heads never take them out, the pins are very easy to damage. There is no comparison in color consistency between the Buffs and the Bron's they are in completely different leagues as well as price ranges. If you do color critical work i.e. product photography with patented colors that need to be reproduced perfectly, do yourself a favor and just buy the Bron's.

Excellent reviews, thank you much! I agree with everything you said, but where the hell is Elinchrom ELB 400 set?! - Wireless triggering and power control via the Skyport system, or an iPhone or iPad via their wireless module. - Asymmetric 2:1 power output (A and B port) for two flash heads. - 424 watt/sec. - MOST IMPORTANTLY: it works with all Elinchrom diffusers and reflectors with the adapter. - TTL pre-flash slave eye sensing so it can be used in combination with TTL off camera flashes. All these (including a nice case) is for less than $2,200!!! All you need is to buy a decent Elinchrom softbox and two solid stands. Common! Do not tell me this is much worst than B1 or B2, please!

Great video and thanks for providing this information! I have some Elinchrom modifiers and I'm thinking about getting a set of B1s. At 15:25 in the video, you show an adapter that looks like an EL26333, but it has a hole in it (which is used to insert the Elinchrom reflectors). On the shopping sites, the photos do not show the EL26333 with the hole in it. Did you modify the EL26333 and drill this yourself? I ask because I have quite a few Elinchrom reflectors (namely a beauty dish and a maxi spot), and I would like to continue to use these with the deflectors Elinchrom provides with their modifiers. The deflector is actually necessary to make the beauty dish functional. Can you provide a little insight on this? Thanks again!

Really enjoy your work and personal projects like the one in Kurdistan and Ethiopia. This video is great explaining the pros and cons. Just bought the Profoto B1 and would like to pursue a few personal projects abroad in PNG and similar locations. Maybe you can make a video just about "light modifiers" and compare them too? Many seem to be in the same price range but differ in setup time etc. Cheers from Sweden! Robin

Thank you for the very nice review. I agree with everything that you said except that I like the Broncolor softboxes more than the Elinchrom Rotalux softboxes. I too like everything about the Elinchrom Rotalux softboxes- from how easy they are to setup and dismantle to how nice the carrying cases are. The Broncolor softboxes do not have fancy carrying cases and setting them up and dismantling can be frustrating and time consuming as with all the other softboxes. However, when it comes to the build quality and evenness of the light, I think the Brons are a step ahead of the Elinchroms. The materials they use they use are much denser and the diffuser is made thicker at the center for a more uniform distribution of light.

Quick question. You mention Paul C. Buff's Einstein and Alien Bees, but never mention their White Lightnings. Have you tried them at all? In my experience with them, they've never failed, travel very well (We have 8 of them spanning two kits). They've never failed in the many years we've been using them and hauling them from location to location. I've never used the Einstein, but judging by this comparison, they're probably not worth it. Definitely not an upgrade from the all metal White Lightnings.

Loved all of this. I got the capital letter treatment on petapixel the other day for saying even with a cheap body and decent glass, lighting will always get you a great shot. In their defense I do question why DSLR's are being released with ISO levels so high, you could shoot with the lens cap on ;) If you can't see it with your eyes, what use is a $xxx camera body ? Great rundown of gear and have to say - what a location too !

I love your videos. Straight forward. Another big benefit of the B1 ... actually HUGE benefit of the B1 for me is the High Speed Sync. Game changer! I can reliably shoot the B1 on my 5D at 1/8000 of a second and it still pushes tons of light through my Elinchrom deep octa! Seriously! I tested it at max speed on a gray wall and no banding anywhere! As I'm typing this, I just thought of breaking my light meter out to see what the light loss is at full power (if any) using HSS compared to standard. I've used my AcuteB2 with my RZ67 for my leaf shutter lenses, but now I have the best of both worlds, depending on the shoot. I might just have to ebay my variable ND filter for my Canon. It's that good. Can you tell I'm excited?

Hey Joey, thank you so much for making this video. I had a question about the Profoto B1's. Looks like Profoto sells 2 of them in a kit for around $4,000.00. As a first time purchase for a portable flash kit, do you think it would be wise to get the 2 flashes or do you think one flash is enough? Thanks again man! Love your work!

Great review, and enjoyed the info on the high end Profoto B1 and the Broncolor. I started out with an Alienbees kit and recently added a couple of Einsteins. "Bang for the buck" the Einstein's are hard to beat. Especially if you add the Cyber Commander with light meter that will control all lights remotely, as well as a couple of their Vagabond Mini's, and you will have multiple lights, modifiers and stands for studio or on location for much less than a couple Profoto's or one Broncolor's.

I wish he would of played with the Speedotron Explorer 1500 pack. I have tried many different lights in my years, and to me there is only one I use. Speedotron Blackline. The stuff is built like a bowling ball (literally). The only thing that can break is the flash tube, and this is true with all of them. I love not only the studio packs, but Explorer 1500 is amazing. I can even HighSpeed Sync with them. I can even dial the flash duration. Color is extremely consistent frame to frame. Its got 7 Stops range in 1/10 increments. I can power it via a AC cord in the studio, and I can use any modifier that fits a speedring, or is am umbrella type. At just under $1,700 its hands down the best unit on the market. Heck almost all of the NBA and Hockey arena are rigged with Black line for the in house photogs. There is a reason for this :) I like ProPhoto, and Broncolor is so so sweet. However I try to always weigh all available information when spending my money. To me you get way more for for money $ per watt with Speedo than anything else. This gear will last a life time!

When I went to school for photography we used Speedotrons, I loved them so much and they are extremely powerful. I'd much prefer to own Speedo for studio but they were a pain in the ads for outdoor shoots, even with the Explorer pack. they're heavy and the power-packed is heavy too. it's not ideal for when your on the road and shooting outdoors but I must say, they hold up quite well outdoors but can just be inconvenient. The power is very much worth it but I don't think I'd travel Wittgenstein often.

"Fucking stupid" on the broncolor mount is indeed the best word to describe it. I love my alien bees mount. Haven't got much experience with the profoto but I like the idea of the traditional method of changing its setting on its pack. It's more fun and faster to work with compared to alien bees and broncolor I bet.

The slow flash duration is what kept me away from the Bron Move 1200L. Half as fast t.1 as a Pro B2-Pro B3 towards the top of the WS power range just sucks on a digi MF leaf shutter. The real question is what color stain did you use on those apple boxes? look quite nice.

Imho the B2 is great for wedding photogs who need more juice in a lightweight small design similar to a speed light. Aside from that specific use case, the b1 is way better otherwise. More power and still compact. Just not handhold able for long durations like the b2 and are best on stands.
