As an Australian, and someone who lived near the plant, and talked to a number of the people there (from the floor, to upper management), I'd have to say that this video is about 30% of the story, and about 1/2 correct. There's so much more that happened, but I don't expect you guys to know any of it. Thanks for bringing at least some of this story to America, I really appreciate it. Some of the 5,000_ people who called the Holden plant their lives would thank you too. Even as someone who's more in to Hondas than Holdens, I would have fought tooth and nail to keep that factory there, employing Australians and producing unique and useful vehicles til my dying days. Those people deserved to be there, and GM had no fucking idea what the Australian market wanted, which was proven after they axed the Elizabeth plant and started importing the Opel Insignia, calling it the "New Holden Commodore". Imagine if GM axed the Camaro and imported some random European sedan, and rebadged it "Camaro" and then expected every American to welcome it with open arms. That's what happened to us in Australia. It doesn't even matter than the car was more powerful, or fuel efficient, or had the same towing capacity. The Commodore wasn't a spec sheet, it was an Australian designed and manufactured vehicle, made by and bought by Australians. To feed us some Euro car with the same name was just rude. Even Ford had the decency to axe the 'Falcon' namebadge after they stopped making the car in Australia. It really makes you realise how poorly managed GM is, and how the faster they fold and pull out entirely, or just completely bin their management and rehire, restarting from the ground up, the better America, and the world will be.
@punman53924 жыл бұрын
fredmackay Many Americans were pissed off when GM got bailed out in 2008 and proceeded to do the usual corporate bailout gig of laying off thousands and giving the executives. Their quality has increased since then but I won’t ever buy a GM car simply because they’re not worth my business. Perhaps Holden could have better survived if they were allowed to spin off as their own domestic brand. Let Holden live as a domestic only manufacturer in Australia until they gain enough capital to start exporting again. Although that would mean competition from a former part of GM and American exporters of cars only really care about their domestic divisions and to them foreign markets only exist to make their domestic products better
@liamransley16554 жыл бұрын
well said mate, i live in adelaide aswell and nearly everyone i knew, knew someone that worked at the plant past or present. the new "commodore" was a disgraceful decision on there part and bringing in cheaply made imported car from Thailand just took the cake. i have my own part of holden history sitting in my shed as a reminder of what they were, a car designed and built by aussies, and enjoyed by aussies.

I love Holdens and when your buying a Holden people want a rear drive V8 with a manual not a tt V6 like the “new” commodore, GM fucked Holden with changing what we had to what they wanted. V8 utes are undeniably the most practical sports car in history. Not selling mine any time soon
@tmmtmm4 жыл бұрын
@@Cammac8 Commodore Utes are pretty compromised from a utility perspective - can only handle 500kg in the tray due to IRS, and if you get one with a hard lid they are even less practical in most ways than a hatchback or wagon. Falcon ute is better due to live rear axle (1200kg load), but trades some of it's sportiness away for it. The biggest sell of the Commodore/Falcon ute isn't actual practicality but rather bogan street cred.
@dukeboreham27824 жыл бұрын
@@tmmtmm if Holden Commodore ute owners wanted to actually put more than 500 kg in the bed, they would get aftermarket suspension better suited to the loads
@tmmtmm4 жыл бұрын
@@dukeboreham2782 The limitation is not the rear springs compressing under the weight, it's the strength of the suspension arms and monocoque chassis. The suspension design is exactly the same as what is in the sedan/wagon and not designed for carrying heavy loads. If you put >500kg in an IRS commodore you risk buckling/breaking the suspension arms and chassis, even if you fit super stiff springs. There are a few funny pictures floating around of Commodore utes with hectik camber on the rear wheels and laying chassis on the ground after the suspension arms gave up under the load. Holden made a '1 tonne' version of the ute that came with a box tray/bed, live rear axle and leaf springs if you wanted more load capacity (>1000kg as per the name) - sporty it was not. The girlytruk crewman also came with live axle and decent load capacity if i'm not wrong.

I've thought about this, and I think one of the biggest factors of Holden going out of business was that for many years, they were a one car company - the Commodore company. Sure they pretended to have cars in other categories like the Barina, Astra and Colorado. But it was obvious to anyone who cared that those cars weren't real Holdens. Did people think the Land Cruiser wasn't a real Toyota? Of course not. Did people think the Territory wasn't a real Ford? No. But nothing Holden made that wasn't a Commodore was ever really given the same kind of respect as they were just other cars rebadged (though at least the Captiva had a real Holden Alloytec V6 engine in certain models - kudos for that). Holden didn't do anything about this for years because Commodore was king and while it was paying the bills, the rest of the line-up was just a distraction. But in my opinion, Holden should have been using those good years to create some decent real Holdens in other categories. E.g. An Australian made hatch that took on the Corolla or Golf. Or an SUV that took on the CX-8 or Sorento. Then in the future when Australian car buying tastes changed, they would have been able to pivot. But what happened was the large sedan / wagon category fell out of favour for SUVs and Dual Cab Utes. What could the Commodore car company do? Tell Australia they were wrong and to please come back? I know there were plenty of other factors at play, and probably the biggest killer of all for Holden was their lackluster export market. But even if all that was in top shape, the lack of diversification would have got them in the end.

@smartey26124 жыл бұрын
Old Man In A Boxster lol get mad. The reason they were better was because they didn’t have engine technology that would date back to the 70s yet u whinge about how old the Falcons are? Ok then. Plus I think the whole point of an Australian car is for it to have a good motor (being ranked the highest on the list because that’s what actually drives the car), be fairly cheap to run, do long distances, sit a load of people, be reliable (unlike the pushrod princess’s over in the Bommodore camp) and a car in which u can have fun with like chucking it into a corner and kicking the rear end out instead of being all serious captain Bogan with lap times. It’s not a Ferrari mate. Besides that, Ford ticked all of those boxes all the way up until the end. As a matter a fact it sounds like you’ve never driven a Falcon. No wonder. Must be one of them lot. The crowd follower. I’ve driven an XR6 Sprint and it shows that they still knew what they were doing in the end. After all they sold out immediately.

Colloquially, I'm what's now termed as a fossil. In a relatively short period of time Australia has gone from a fairly proud vehicle manufacturing country to one that now builds nothing. We built GM products & Holdens, Fords, Chryslers, BMCs, Toyotas, Mitsubishis, Nissan/Datsuns, Hillmans and assembled other marques such as Mercedes, Peugeot, Renault. We also assembled tractors such as Fergusons and Fords, we built a vast range of trucks including Internationals, Dodges, Fords, Commers , Macks (I think they're still in production) Austins and many others. I've listened to all the reasons for decades but I am still saddened by the loss of the industry and the country's reliance on imports. If a military crisis arose, how could we swing into defence production? What factories remain? We've been caught with our pants down around our ankles with this cursed coronavirus. We have no fuel reserves and very little capacity to defend ourselves. History has proved to expect the worst when we're most vulnerable. I want to be wrong but it's certainly worth a thought.

Add to that a tiny domestic market and geographic isolation and you're left with digging stuff out of the ground and flogging it.

Thanks so much for the post. I have a 2007 HOLDEN CALAIS HSVi VE V V8 ... lots of letters, I know. I purchased mine on special order and it is a one-off. It is badged in the engine bay [HOLDEN SPECIAL VEHICLE INDIVIDUAL]. It cost me $75,000.00 brand new and I have never ever had any trouble with it. My model also won the prestigious Australian car award in 2006, WHEELS CAR OF THE YEAR. Your post, and many other reviewer's posts on the demise of HOLDEN, makes me angry every time I see what GM in the USA had done to our national icon. It took away around 200,000 jobs from Australians and as you stated, now there are no cars at all being built in Australia. There are so many Australian billionaires in this country that I have no idea why they just all couldn't get together and save HOLDEN and give GM "the flick". I look forward to the day when HOLDEN will come back. My own car was serviced today, I spoke to the staff about this issue and one Lady told me that HOLDEN had been in her family for over 70 years. Her Father worked for HOLDEN for over 40 years, she's been working for HOLDEN for over 20 years. She has 2 HOLDEN's and now all they are really doing at my local dealership is servicing Australian made HOLDENs, they are hardly selling any of the American and German imported and re-badged HOLDENS. Australians do not want other country's cars calling themselves HOLDENS. I think that this is a great "kick in the teeth" to GM in the USA. Mess with Aussies ... we'll show our disgust by not buying any of your re-badged cars! My car has now increased in price as it is not only rare, but also a one-off. I will never sell my HOLDEN. I've owned a lot of Holdens over the years, but by far my favourite was my 1977 Hatchback Torana V8! Absolute classic that I never stop regretting selling.
