Geauga Lake was a cornerstone of my childhood in the 90s and 2000s. We got season passes every year. One year we went 20 times that season. One day we'd just go on the Villian over and over the whole day. One day we kept swapping between the Pirates 4D show (featuring Leslie Neelson! Hooray for Captain Lucky!) and the Mission Bermuda Triangle motion simulator. We had the luxury because we knew we'd be back in less than a week. That last season, my family was going one last time during Oktoberfest. I was an obnoxious teenager and justdidn't feel like going with my family, so I said, "Nah, I'll stay home and go again in the spring". They announced the closure a week later. I never got that last trip, never got those last rides. Never got to say goodbye. I've been filled with regret ever since. I've refused to go back to Cedar Point ever since. I'll never forgive them. Seeing this update is really emotional. If I look at urban explorer photos or satellite images is just super depressing and I tear up. I don't know if I'll ever be able to drive past again and see... *shudder* housing developments where my childhood once was.

Ohio already has two major theme parks and it’s doubtful we could support a third. Especially a park of that nature and Ohio isn’t a state that attracts people naturally, like California or Florida. So it’s not going to get the same traffic as other amusement parks. And the population has decreased greatly in recent years around the area. It was just going to happen eventually, especially as people have less disposable income nowadays.

Keeping in mind that Geauga Lake opened in (I think) 1888 the train tracks in ancient times actually brought thousands of people there. At one time there was a little train station between S World and G Lake. The Big Band Era used to rule at these parks like Geauga Lake and Chippewa. People came in for dancing all the time. I used to have a season pass to both parks and I would start out at S World then walk the tracks over to G Lake and go past that train station. That building with the green trim at about 6:15 is the ball room. If I remember my readings right, it was the 3rd one over the many years. The first 2 went down because of fire and when it got rebuilt it was always a bit smaller than before. The building at about 9:10 that you liked which is so close to the old property line fence I'm thinking was the Shark Encounters building. The other building that is close to it looks like the 4D theater. There was another building close to those 2 buildings that is now gone. It was for a "motion" film where you were in a mini sub and they found a sunken ship. Of course, you escaped just before a avalanche trapped you in the sub. Good memories for me too.

I went to that Sea World as a very young kid. My parents bought me the smallest Shamu stuffed animal they had, and I LOVED it. Sad. It breaks my heart to lose a place that existed to make people happy. Same with Idora Park. It hurts to see the Wildcat hanging there in mid air before they bulldozed it to make sure all the heartsick people calling to save the park would shut their French Fry Holes forever. Now the Blue Streak at Conneaut Lake . . . "accidentally" burned when the new owner decided to . . . BURN SCRAPS NEAR IT!!! Was it a coincidence that he avoided any comments regarding preserving that priceless landmark, then was on site as it burned a few months later?? Well, you're not alone in your feelings of loss. We all need to support remaining parks. I do and will continue to.

9:31 just sparked a memory, now I could be wrong because it was 20+ years since I was at SeaWorld, but this I think used to be the 4D theater for when I was there Pirates of the Carribbean and I hated it because of water being spayed on you...etc. It was traumatizing for a 6 year old. I also remember seeing fireworks over the lake and also seeing a roller coaster from across the lake where Six Flags was as sun was setting. I also remember petting a dolphin even though the signs said not to pet them. It is so sad how both parks ended up closing down and now just rubble. I just went that one time to SeaWorld, but still it's sad to see it all gone, it's just memories now.

Remember my parents taking me to Sea World couple times during the time they had the one pirate boat with the water cannons on it. On the first trip I turned the water cannon around and sprayed the people on the boat the staff member on the boat was not quite happy about that. On the 2nd trip there they had setup the water cannons so you could only turn it so far and that's it. Perhaps I was the reason they done that but I will never know for 100% sure.

That building was the former Shark Encounter that he wasn't sure about it's use. It had sharks in a large tank that guests could walk into and see various sharks and habitats on the Sea World side of the park.

My earliest recollections of the park were in the very early 60's when the park really didn't offer much in the way of rides. There was the roller coaster, the Wild Mouse, the carousel, & a few other minor attractions. My Dad & I used to rent the old leaky row boats & spend the day fishing on the lake while the sight seeing boat used to take folks on a trip around the perimeter. It was very rustic back then! They started building it up later, adding new rides & attractions over the years & Sea World came. I remember there was an accident during a water show when a speed boat lost control & ended up in the stands landing on top of a group of spectators! Lot's of memories!

Six Flags ran this park straight into the ground. Tried to compete with Cedar Point and it just wasn't happening. It angered the whole town when they doubled the price of admission so the park lost its longstanding customer base. SF then had to rely on seasonal tourism and nobody was making a special trip there when it was less than 100 miles to CP. Cedar Fair bought that ruined monstrosity, gave it a couple farewell years and then shut it down. They never had any interest in keeping it open, they just wanted those new rides SF installed to put in their other parks.

@autismworldtravel Жыл бұрын
Exactly. It was poorly run and they lost as soon as they tried to make it into another cedar point or kings island. The appeal was to keep it quaint, affordable, family friendly, and nostalgic. Ohio already had two major theme parks. Cleveland and the surrounding areas experienced population declines as well. Ohio isn’t a vacation destination and typically only Ohioans and our closest neighbors, people passing through, and locals to keep these parks thriving. Those rare roller coaster enthusiasts can’t be their focus. I think if they kept it simple it could’ve stayed open, rather than bringing in so many modern big rides.

I went to Sea World and Geauga lake park many times during my childhood. This was in the 60’s and 70’s. The cool thing was, MY father took us there because he had gone there as a kid, way before they built Sea World. When we first started going there, admission to the park was free and they charged by the ride and you paid with tickets. Then they started charging to get in the park and you bought a ride pass for the day which was a little paper tag that you put on your clothes with a string. I always looked forward to summer vacation because that’s what we did….we went to parks (Euclid Beach, Conneaut Lake, Idora, Cedar Point, Myers’s Lake, Kennywood, Rock Springs, Cascade, Westwood) but Geauga was a personal favorite. I’m in my mid 60’s now and I still like going to parks, even though we moved away in 1987 to a place where I don’t have nearly as much access to amusement parks as when I was a kid. When I think about what they’ve done with Geauga and Sea World, for that matter, most of the other parks I mentioned, I have a deep seeded sadness because I feel like a part of me has been taken away. I just hate it.

X-Flight was at Kings Island as Firehawk but that closed in 2018. Interestingly enough, Carowinds also had their Yo-Yo, but unfortunately that gave its last rides in 2022.

It’s no wonder kids sit around doing drugs and getting into trouble. I remember all the things there used to be for kids to do. When I was a teenager I used to go bowling and roller skating regularly. We’d then all go to Pizza Hut together. We’d go to the movies and arcades together. Every summer we’d go to various amusement parks. Now there’s nothing left. The skating rink in my town is gone now. There’s a car wash there now. The bowling alley is closed and boarded up. Pizza Hut is closed (too expensive anyway). The mall arcades are longggg gone. Hollywood doesn’t produce many good movies anymore. All the local amusement parks are gone. I remember going to Idora Park when I was really little. Conneaut Lake Park was another one we frequented, and of course Geauga Lake! One by one they all disappeared. Remnants of Conneaut are still there but it’s only a dilapidated shell of its former self. So sad.

The biggest problem with Geauga Lake was attendance. I blame that mostly on highway access. If a park is not close to a highway then it will not be a people draw. I believe that in their final season less than 700,000 people showed up. People speak with their foot traffic. If the people were coming it would still be open. I was not happy when it closed but doing some research on why it closed and the year over year attendance decline it suffered from for many years. I now understand why it happened. We still have 2 amazing amusement parks in ohio. We need to be thankful that we live by what are considered 2 of the best amusement parks in North America.
