I am truly fascinated by these intelligent, empathetic, and resourceful people. They were, I believe, as human as we are and I'm glad a bit of them lives on in most if not all of us. I'm proud of my bit of Neanderthal DNA--these people were survivors and hung on in conditions that might well do for many humans but managed to keep their humanity, caring for sick and injured members of their group, burying their dead and even managing to create a bit of art. This is why I refer to them as homo sapiens Neanderthalensis.

Well done documentary. I learned things I did not know. Like Neanderthals being around for 300,000 years. We still have a long time to go before we are that successful as a species. Looking at the state of things today we'll be doing good to survive another 300 years, much less 300,000.

From what I understand, the Denisovans were generally further east, as in Siberia and maybe as far south and east as Mongolia. They apparently interbred with modern humans in other Asian countries. Although this video says that there is as much Neanderthal DNA in Asians and South East Asians today (of course I heard that just as I was typing the first part of my comment). I guess the origins and intermingling of Denisovans will be a separate video, as it seems to me that if there are Asians with Neanderthal DNA, some of them are likely to also have Denisovan DNA as well.

nah grains (carbs) are a newer addition to our diet 10k years. So cultures that grow them will have more tolerance to them. It isn't related to N genes as homo sapirns also were meat eaters and hunter /gatherers until the advent of farming and "civilization" which also brought on the use of slaves for labor and shortly after major warfare as other groups desired what entrenched peoples had .(much as raids on other hunter /gatherer tribes would be to claim women for breeding and to reduce competition for foods in the area. The homo sapiens were the travelers who entered the neanderthals land so food was likely the motivating factor for their movement out of Africa.(as Neanderthals also moved out of Africa 100,000's of years before)

No, I don't believe their tools and technology, their knowledge of plants and hunting were lost: humans shared the same areas so it would be more than natural for them to learn survival skills and technology from the Neanderthals that was beneficial, perhaps even superior. Perhaps some tribes even learned/copied some aspects of cultural and religious practices, just like humans do today.

After Neandeethal had to scare the sapiens. it is a force of nature. Imagine he could jump from the 3rd floor of a house and it was a normal jump. He hunted with stakes that he drove into the animal and kept the stake in his hands fixed to the ground. Our sapiens ancestors were also stronger than us and faster but not able to face the animal like that. They hunted with more vices, for endurance. sapiens is one of the most enduring species on the planet.

What happened between humans and Neanderthals is exactly what is happening with polar bears today. The polar bears will soon be extinct but their genes will carry on in the grizzly bears. As the polar bears habitat is disappearing they are coming south and mating with grizzlies. A pure polar bear could not live in these regions but the half breeds can.

This documentary, while very well-done, is clearly a bit dated. I'd guess it was made circa 2009 or so-also no mention of Denisovans (which were revealed to be a separate species in 2010).

I can't help wondering what the environment of earth would be like if modern humans had never lived. It sounds like the Neanderthals could have gone on forever without despoiling the planet. Well, we can't turn back time now, can we?
