I think a big part of their appeal is that they are clearly having fun while being outstanding live performers. The lead guitarist and composer, Kanami, is very soft-spoken and shy and sometimes an airhead but put a guitar in her hands and she becomes a demon. During their live shows, Miku (band-founder, lyricist,, rhythm guitar, and backing vocals) works the crowd with her "magic time" based on her experience working in maid-cafes. And above all, they clearly appreciate their fans.

I don't agree completly. Unseen World may be descibed like this. But not the Albums before, they are much more like the 80's Rock. Straigh hard music with much melody and not as fast as many songs on Unseen World. Try Domination live or Play life from their offical channel then you might hear what I mean. But what is really astonishing, is how they changed this fast songs (like Different ) to acoustic versions. I have in my whole life ( 60 now ) not heard anything like this. It just blew me away. This is really music mastery!!!

Agreed on that. Watched nearly their whole spread and many reactions now, and the one thing above all that strikes me is their ability to consrtruct a WHOLE song, not just obligitory parts that are pressed together. Many times they will preview an upcoming riff without being obvious, or echo the melody/rhythm across multiple parts, and every section transition seems to build and blend into the next.

Bucking the trend a little, all the bands you've been getting introduced to are great, excellent musicians and worth further listening. Where I think Band Maid have excelled is largely a combination of their productivity (seven albums in eight years), a period of exceptional creativity over a number of styles, and completely and humbly giving themselves over to their performances and audiences, creating online concerts and songs specifically to keep fans engaged at a difficult time. Kudos on a first-time reaction that identified a lot of the key elements of what makes Band-Maid so great. The thing with this group is that in spite of having so much individual talent and ability (wouldn't change a member for the world) they still somehow create something that is more than the sum of their parts. The more you get to know their songs and how amazing each member is the more the appreciation of that sum grows. What I'd say as to what makes them so different is their work ethic and compositions, which frankly makes so many of the bands I've heard before sound creatively lacklustre. Multiple changes in a riff for example would have other bands thinking "wait, we'll take that part and make it its own song", but not Band-Maid. They fill almost all of their songs with as much as they can, layer upon layer, that gives them a richness and depth like few others, while still maintaining distinct melodies. Couple all that with a beautiful tsundere singer, the cuteness and limitless tenacity of the 810 year old pigeon on rhythm guitar, the off the charts adorability and musical genius of the most humble lead guitarist in the world, the sultry silent barefoot assassin always slaying on bass, and the happiest creature on earth when destroying a drum kit, and you have something truly too good for this world :D

It's surprisingly difficult to find musically knowledgeable reactors like yourself to help non-musicians like me to recognize and understand the composition details of my favorite groups like the outstanding Band-Mand, so subscribing to your channel is a must. While Band-Maid has many great and varied MVs, there seems to be general agreement that they excel in performing before a live audience and the "Domination" official live video is one that many point to as being particularly representative of their incredible talents. The amazing purely instrumental "Onset" live official video showcases their musical skills with everyone having eventual short solos. The MV of the song "Daydreaming" is a great example of a power ballad and is a favorite of many and the MV "Dice" is a real favorite hard rock favorite. The band also have several great acoustic versions like "Puzzle" which are all a joy to hear. I am an older guy (61) who was lucky enough to start listening to music at about the time Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple were starting out. I am not a musician but I definitely know what I like in rock/metal. I discovered Band-Maid a couple of years ago and I immediately realized how good they are. They started in 2013 as a very young and experienced band (unlike Lovebites and Nemophila). As a result, they played songs written by others on their first few albums. However as time went by, Kanami Tono (the lead guitarist you complemented) began writing most of the songs. In fact, on the last two albums she wrote all the songs. The song Warning is from their most recent album called Unseen World and it is in my top 10 albums of 2021. It is an incredible album. The restraint you saw from Kanami was not only from the guitarist but from the songwriter and arranger. Misa the bassist and Akane Hirose the drummer have both admitted that they have been constantly pushed by Kanami and would not be at their current world class level without her. Kanami reminds me of Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick because they are both quirky lead guitarists with an innate ability to write great, catchy songs. As others have suggested, I think you should listen to the two song video of Manners and Black Hole. Both are also from Unseen World. It is on their KZbin channel. Then go back to their live videos in front of an audience, especially Onset (an instrumental), Domination and Freedom.

Great reaction! There's so many directions you can take for your next step with Band-Maid, but here are a two options: 1) Live performance of DOMINATION (filmed before Covid so actual audience in attendance) will give you a great look at their command of the stage and the audience, and great interactions between the band members. Band-Maid is first and foremost a LIVE band, having worked their way up playing hundreds of small venues and this performance shows how they perfected the total LIVE package, not just playing the music. The LIVE version of PLAY from this same concert is also great, with a great opening sequence which showcases all the instruments. 2) Manners / Blackhole are two songs in one video. Its LIVE but during the Covid lockdowns so no audience interactions. I suggest this video because I think they released this to showcase the two extreme ends of their spectrum of songs. Manners is bluesy groove rock and Blackhole is metal/punk/prog controlled chaos with beautiful melodies and harmonies by the two vocalists overlaid on top.

if you do more from Band-Maid, you will notice that its ALL about the song, not about the solo ;) to your question, I think they have a diverse forms of rock vs some other bands who stick to one type of metal for example. they do mix other genres into rock and still keep their songs. Rinne, Daydreaming, Onset, Catharsis, Start Over all have differing themes to their sound. whether it be borderline metal, pop rock, soft rock, punk rock, jazz rock this band can fill that void. They also CAN PLAY it LIVE on top of that(where a lot of bands will sound flat LIVE without the studio magic), and a lot of times they will even make special arrangement versions in the LIVE versions of their songs(highly recommend to check the music video or audio tracks 1st for the "vanilla version" for comparison).

Kanami (lead guitarist) always does tasteful solos. She is extremely humble and always composes the solo to fit the song - she rarely shows off (which sometimes results in her part being a tiny wee bit low in the mix - imho). I believe she mentioned in an interview once that she composes solos to flesh out emotions in the listener. She is the main composer of their music and I hope one day will be recognised as one of the great rock composers.

thank you for an heart felt review. you definitely know your stuff, not just music, but you also seem to be aware of the various and numerous folk that are going to tune in to watch your channel when you are reacting to "their" band. I love Band-Maid. the first time I saw Freedom live, the joy these ladies exude is visible to see. they love performing. It's too bad you can't really take a look at their recent acoustic show they did at Christmas. Their talent really shone there, as Kanami and Miku basically rewrote 80% of the songs so they would work acoustically. For me, I think what sets these talented ladies apart is their personalities, and that is something you'll have to delve into. In the meantime, they are an amazing band that clicks together very well. And they like each other. They laugh together a lot and love to share that with the fans. They also have one of the most solid backing section going these days, much the same way they used to talk about U2. Personally, to start down the rabbit hole, you need to check out Thrill MV, as that is the video that saved the band, and then from there, I think Alone, which from what I understand is the first song the written by the band. From there.... well Band-Maid is your oyster

They make me smile, not because they are in any way funny, neither the juxtaposition of maid outfits and rock, but the crafting of their songs and especially their attitude on stage is truly heart-warming. I have never seen a drummer smile all though her solo - which is another thing; they often give each other space, almost a stolen jazz element where they take turns to shine. Because of all these things I think 'Domination' & 'Freedom' (live) are their best songs, I always use these to blow away the blues, but aside from as a cure for depression... Bill's suggestion of 'Manners + Black Hole' is great.

Well… another knowledgeable reactor worth subscribing to! You’re spot on about the band, and in noticing how the song always comes before showing off as individuals. In fact many times you’ll notice that some of the most incredible work by each of them occurs during the normal course of a song, and not in “solo” form. “Manners/Black Hole” (2 songs in one video) would be a great choice next. As for what sets them apart, IMO, is the sheer number of great songs they put out. Great musicianship is nothing if it doesn’t create great songs, and they seem to be incapable of making a bad song. I can’t say the same for top tier bands that I’ve loved all my life! I already have them in the pantheon of the greatest rock bands I’ve ever heard… and, at 55, I’ve heard all the biggest and best.

On top of every member being great at what they do and a pillar of the band, something about BAND-MAID's music appeals to the casual listener as you said it's nice on the ears, but is layered and deep enough that musicians can dig into and appreciate what they are doing musically. Kanami, the lead guitarist is the driving force behind the songwriting, and she somehow has that blend of being a detailed musician and someone who can write catchy as hell choruses. Everything the band does serves the song. It's always tasteful and never lazy. Honestly you can pick any song and it would be a good direction to go. People might say that about a lot of bands but with BAND-MAID it's actually true. What sets BAND-MAID apart? The band was started by a pigeon, po. Their last concert was acoustic. They can go from an extremely hard rock song like Rinne to a slow emotional song like About Us, they have multiple instrumental tracks like Onset that show off their musical talent, they can push the tempo to 220bpm in BLACK HOLE and then drop down to a crawl for Puzzle (acoustic, live) and bring the emotions with just the singer and an acoustic guitar. They can write complex progressive tracks like Giovanni. They do bass solos, guitar solos, drums solos, and even a rare rhythm guitar solo. Did I mention they also have an alter ego called BAND-MAIKO that has its own unique style. Three tracks I would start with: Day Dreaming - ballad kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHTEloihp66nr7s Onset (live) - instrumental kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4fVf2CglLqWZrc Manners/BLACK HOLE (live) - rock two different ways kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5LJamekg7iFfac

The next logical step would be something different than this - and if there's one thing this awesome band does, is spread their stylistic wings. For hard groove, I'd go with Manners, although I personally like the MV better on that one than the live, only because of the recording quality. For songs that touch on several genres in one song, go for Domination Live, No God or Blooming MV. Another very different way to go is their soft side, and Daydreaming would be the fan fave there, or a live of About Us (written to the fans to cheer them up after covid hit and all their shows were canceled, including the band's big break at the 14,000 plus seat Budokan. By now, the maids should be as big as any other band out there - but covid hit and the exact wrong time - and you already know how passionate their fan base is - we're trying to keep them in front of people until they can tour - hopefully the US in 2022 (they've announced the tour but not the dates.) One more thing - you can choose a song a random with this band and you'll never know what you'll get - but you do know it'll be somewhere between great and OMFG!!

Band Maid is always, ALWAYS about the song. Their knowledge of music theory and what makes a great rock song is incredible for so young a group. Every member of this band could be a star in their own right but they know that this band has five strong pillars that combine to make one of the best rock bands in decades. Kanami, the lead guitarist, in particular could just show off every song. She is that good, no, great a guitarist. But again it is about what works in the song. Another well structured, knowledgeable and articulate reaction, you are fast setting a benchmark as a quality channel here! And a killer chorus, which is their trademark. btw, I have finally twigged that you're a fellow Aussie - I've got so used to watching American reactors, I didn't realise why your accent seemed so familiar! Hey, great reaction! You have gotten a lot of good suggestions of fan favorites, so I'm going to do it differently and suggest some deep cuts instead: Corallium - Peak Band-Maid. From their latest single Sense. Really dense song with many musical ideas. Giovanni - Closest Band-Maid has come to prog rock. Matchless GUM - From their first fully self composed single. A bit stripped down with a great melody. Flying High - A really groovy song with great vocal layering Turn Me On - Some of the riffs and the solo gives me a Ride the Lightning feel.

Mr. PC, thank you for a very insightful critique to your first BM song. They put on an acoustic online concert on x-mas and one song called "Catharsis" out of 14 songs performed is on their official YT channel. The original song is on their Conqueror (2019) album and is very much a fast tempo hard rock one. It might be interesting to do a 2 for 1 and listen to both the original studio version and live acoustic. The YT acoustic version is there on a limited time basis. Archive tickets which expires March 25th for the whole concert are still available. Needless to say it is well worth the money. I myself have watched it 7-8 times. Looking forward to your next reaction!

The breadth and diversity of the Band-Maid catalog of over 100 songs is impressive enough. Plus they have an amazing sense of melody, have a terrific synergy, very dynamic and powerful and FUN. They shine brightest when they are in from of their fans. I would say check out DOMINATION-LIVE for the quintessential Live Band-Maid. ONSET-LIVE is a Rock instrumental that tops all rock instrumentals. PLAY-LIVE is classic Band-Maid. They do have some intense chaotic newer songs but always done with composure and coolness. Very insightful reaction, really impressed! IMO, the thing sets them apart the most is their love to Maidiacs (fans). Spends a lot of time and energy to make the song as interesting as possible. Always show their pure joy on stage, no unnecessary show-offs unless a song requires. Songs are always kept short to prevent audiences from being over exhausted in live shows. They truly care about their fans. They even have love letters for fans, beautiful songs named "Smile"(not on their official channel though) and "about Us". Totally different taste and worth checking out.

Make no mistake, Kanami has the chops to be hyper technical and shreddy IF it fits the song. She has said that she doesn't write solos by jamming with the band, but at home to think and compose! "In my mind, a good guitar solo will trigger emotions, and you will not forget it once you hear it. I always keep that in mind when I create the solos." Kanami Tono!!! Great reaction!!!👍👍🤘🤘🤘

Wow, you articulated a lot of what I feel about Band-Maid. "Tasteful chaos", lots of ideas, "but nothing is more than it needs to be." And your analysis of the lead's solos (Kanami) are exactly right in terms of their musical function. The main things that set this band apart for me: 1) bringing back a strong sense of melodic hooks and song structure, while at the same time 2) introducing new elements, including different genres and song styles (e.g. they just did an all-acoustic set) and variations each time a verse/bridge/chorus comes around; and 3) instrumental polyphony and rhythmic complexity, which fills out the melodic lines in engaging ways (this is something most reactors miss, but you seem to have figured that out). And BTW thank you for seeing past the outfits; some people weirdly get hung up on that. I have a lot of personal favs, but to take your advice: if you are going to stick around for a while, you might want to get a picture of how much this band has evolved: maybe go back to YOLO or Secret My Lips, which both have everything that is Band-Maid, but in an earlier form; or if you'd like to see their slower more balladic side, try Daydreaming or Anemone. On later albums (Conqueror and Unseen World) they get more exploratory, but that can wait.

Hey Prymal, All Band Maid songs are our favourite songs lol. But I will suggest two for different reasons. One is the live instrumental - Onset - on their channel - in this they bring out the tricks as you described. They put it all on show in a brilliant 4 minutes - not just the lead guitar, but the drummer, rhythm guitar and especially the bassist (about 2.31 in watch her hands). The other is Secret My Lips - also on their channel - guitar, bass, drums and vocal harmonies - really showcases their overall talent and builds to a beautiful outro. This one is a masterclass in arrangement.

They are right now the best Rock band in the world, and #1 in Japan. The maid costumes are to create "the Gap" meaning the difference in what you are seeing "demure maids" vs what you are hearing Hard Rock. The Gap is popular in Japan. They have creative control of their music. Kanami (lead guitar) writes the demo sending it to MISA (bass) and Akane (drums) for their lines. Once the music is complete it goes to Miku (rhythm guitar, band founder, spokes pigeon) for the lyrics with Saiki (vocals) working with her. Then they finish in the studio, with Saiki having the "we're done" call. The music is credited to the band with lyrics credited to Miku. They have been touring the US and Europe since 2016 and have announced a US tour this year, cities TBD. NEXT; Puzzle live and Puzzle acoustic. Same song done very different. OR Catharsis from their December Live Stream acoustic concert.

FROM JAPAN ◆ Thank you for your reaction to BAND-MAID. BAND MAID is celebrating its 9th year of formation. BAND was formed by a girl who came to Tokyo from a local city of Japan to become a singer when she was about 19 years old. Five unique and talented girls gathered. The members have not changed, and they are continuing their efforts to improve their playing ability. They are constantly writing new songs and cool songs. Three new songs were released at the end of October. BAND MAID is a hard rock band, but it's a very diverse band. Listen to different types of songs. All songs are on their official KZbin channel and are usually not blocked. 1 Thrill : The first music video that saved them from dissolution. Classic rock 2014 2 Sense : The theme song of the anime "Platinum End". Dramatic, fast hard rock with a classic intro. 2021.10 3 Bubble : A tribute to the movie Bohemian Rhapsody, funky rock 4 Different : First anime opening song, new sense of high-speed rock. Anime is Log Horizon 3rd season. 2020.12 5 Daydreaming : Beautiful power ballad. Saiki and Kobato vocals and Kanami's guitar solo are wonderful. 6 Dice : Rhythmic hard rock singing women's independence 7 about us : A gift for fans who cannot meet in a pandemic. Beautiful ballad. 2021.02 8 Freedom : A power rock that walks around the stage and conveys a smile. The transition from drum solo to lead guitar is the best. 9 Manners : Declaration to create new hard rock while inheriting classic rock. Cool hard rock. Rock'n'Roll never die. 10 alone : The song they wrote, composed and released for the first time. Medium speed Hard Rock 2016 11 Secret My Lips & Secret Maiko Lips : Funky Hard Rock. A gift for fans of April Fool's Day . 12 Blooming : Vocals and chorus are impressive, and various types of music are fused. 13 RINNE : High-speed rhythmic heavy rock, inspired by the Japanese horror movie "RINNE : Reincarnation". RINNE (Reincarnation) is also found in Eastern thought and Buddhist thought. 14 onset : Instrumental song for lead singer Saiki breaks, their great playing power and harmony. 15 Play : A song composed as an instrumental song, but Miku added lyrics as Saiki liked it. With different intros depending on the live. 16 Before Yesterday : Record of the first overseas performance, Sakura-Con in Seattle 2016. Melodic Rock with great lyrics. 17 Choose me : An insert song of the concert scene the Netflix movie KATE, they appeared as BAND MAID. Cool rock song. 18 Dragon Cries : The only song produced by Tony Visconti. It's not their lyrics, but it sings about the future of human society and the earth. Great Heavy Classic Rock . 19 After Life : A homage to the maid cafe and band formation where Kobato worked. BAND-MAID Hard Rock . 20 Corallium : The song that Saiki wrote all the lyrics for the first time. Hip pop style dancing hard rock. 21 Catharsis : A song from Acoustic Live, showing their diversity, and they do their best in every genre. Added ★ Peace & Love : Founder Miku Kobato's solo project. Pigeon saves the world. Funky pop rock.

Welcome to the perpetual rock-party called Band-Maid! Always brave, positive, inventive, tasteful, prolific (110+ awesome songs) and utterly charismatic ladies. Band-Maid is a musicians' band, they stuff so many interesting elements in every song, so it would be enough for an album, but you have to be a musician/composer to recognize and appreciate it. What song to recommend? I'd say any on their YT channel, but with some exceptions: "Secret Maiko Lips" only after "My Secret Lips", "Start Over" is just an oddity song that doesn't depict them fairly. Band-Maid is a live band, they shine on stage with crowd, but some live recordings are not well mixed or made online without live audience: "Dice", "Manners", "Different" and "Choose Me" are better as MVs. And the last thing: please don't waste your time trying to categorize them into rock/metal genres: Band-Maid is a genre on their own like Queen, Pink Floyd, Muse etc. They did everything from rockabilly, pop, punk, jazz, funk, classic, blues, metal to prog, but mostly they stay in a hard-rock territory with all its diversity.

I was pleasantly surprised to see you dive into band-maid. Each member are talented at what they do and no member ever seems to have overinflated ego issues so you see them always working to put the song and composition first as well as everyone getting to shine and have featured moments. Miku is the one who created the maid concept and started things. She plays rhythm guitar (which she only started learning after forming the band. Lead guitarist Kanami is her guitar teacher). She also writes most or all of the lyrics and sings backup and occasionally some lead vocals. She's also extroverted and talkative which serves her well as the band's spokespidgeon. Kanami- lead guitarist and responsible for most or all of the song compositions. Also Miku's guitar sensei so to speak Misa- bass guitar and aka the barefoot assassin. You'll often hear her playing prominent bass lines that stand out so not your typical just carrying the rhythm but kind of easy to overlook bass playing. She does lots of funky lead lines and quite a few songs have bass solo sections. Also known for hybrid switching between picking and slapping technique. Akane- drums which she pounds like a gorilla but also with great precision and as with the other instruments too you will hear her being dynamic and often what starts in the early verse or chorus will change and evolve as the song progresses rather than just repeating the same way every time. Jimmy Page is said to have been impressed after seeing her play and so wanted to meet her after a show once. There's many embellished fan fiction versions of this story floating around the KZbin comments sections as often happens when stories and anecdotes get retold then the retellings get retold etc. Saiki- last but not least is Saiki on lead vocals. Miku originally wanted to be lead vocalist but decided she wasn't quite right for what their style and sound needed so the band recruited Saiki for that role. Her charisma and stage presence really shines when they are in front of a crowd and she often has that power and command that's needed for hard rock and metal but can do softer and emotional when the song needs it too. You'll get plenty of recommendations but I hope to see the MV for blooming sometime. Also the accoustic version of Catharsis is only going to be available to watch for a limited time so I hope you get to react to it while it's still on their official KZbin channel

Thrill (2014) is pretty much the "start" of Band-Maid. They released one mini album earlier, but it's totally different and they pretty much never play anything from it (except one song they did in their acoustic show last xmas). "Alone" (2016) is the first song Band-Maid did everthing themselves (music/lyrics and arrangements). "Freedom" (2016) is also early BM and the official live has a great drum solo!. The instrumental "Onset" (2019) is also a great pick. Domination (2018) is in my eyes the song that is most Band Maid. The also have an album called BAND-MAIKO which is metal/hard rock played with traditional japanese instruments. If you want total chaos go fot Black Hole (2021) it's available as a live toghether with Manners (they play them back to back) on YT live. The great thing about Band-Maid is that they appeal to old classic rock fans, pop fans, and metalheads alike. Unfortunately, these livestream concerts they've done during the pandemic don't have the best mixing, and the kick drum and guitars aren't as strong as they should be. Look at some live videos from before the pandemic like "Domination" official live, because their crowd interaction is spectacular. They were founded by Miku Kobato (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), who had worked in two maid cafes, one in her hometown Kumamoto and another in Tokyo after she moved there to pursue a career as a pop singer. She decided that having a band of maids playing hard rock was a cool idea and formed Band-Maid. Originally, she was the lead singer, but after a couple of gigs she decided her voice wasn't strong enough for hard rock, and they hired Saiki Atsumi for lead vocals. Miku didn't know how to play an instrument at the time, and so she asked Kanami (lead guitarist) to teach her how to play. The first two albums were all written for them by other songwriters. The third album featured a few songs with lyrics written by Miku (with some contribution from Saiki) and one song, "Alone," written entirely by the band members. Almost everything on the last four albums has been written by the band. "Alone" (music video) would be another good one for you to go to soon. Members, in order of joining, are: Miku Kobato (Little Pigeon, birth name Mika Noguchi) - Rhythm guitar, backing vocals, occasional lead vocals, primary lyricist Kanami Tōno (Mincho) - Lead guitar, keyboards (backing tracks only), occasional backing vocals, primary songwriter Akane Hirose (Gorilla) - Drums MISA (Barefoot Assassin, surname undisclosed) - Bass Saiki Atsumi (Ice Queen) - Lead vocals, secondary lyricist

Generally true but I do think the Dice MV, Different MV and even Choose Me MV have a better mix than their Live counterparts

@@PrymalChaos Oh yeah, as long as you react to stuff from their youtube channel and stop it a couple times to talk, they will not block you. They're really good about that.

MISA!!! MISA!!! MISA!!! 🥃🥃🥃 Badass Bass Assassin. Band-Maid are the best Hard Rock band in the world right now. Band-Maid MV's are very good but their Live videos are times better because you can see how talented these musicians really are in concert and how much fun they have on stage with each other. Your next reactions should be the official Live versions of Domination, Play, Onset, Freedom, Manners/Black Hole, Real Existence, After Life and Choose Me just to get you started. Then you can react to the hard to find official Live links of Don't You Tell Me, Moratorium, Take Me Higher, Turn Me On and Puzzle (both electric and acoustic) I'm sure one of the Band-Maidiacs or Maidiacs will help you with those links. 1 song down and 110 more songs to go 🤙🏼

If you want to check out other sides of Band-Maid: Freedom (live) is a much poppier song, but with really good extended guitar and drum solos, as well as great interaction with the audience. Wonderland (live) is a very bluesy tune, while Daydreaming (music video) is perhaps their best ballad (and includes my favorite guitar solo of them all)..

Welcome to the pigeon hole po! If you want to see more of Kanami's solos and guitar work, try Blooming and Onset, which is an instrumental. Her solos will fit the song and she only does what the song needs.
