Hi there. How are you able to tell where to stop clipping the nail when looking at the top of the nail? I can only tell where the quick is by looking underneath. Thanks.
@workingcanineclub766

Great question Steph, determining where the quick is in your dog's nail looking from the top can be rather difficult. I tend to look from the side of the nail to see where the quick is and then cut at an angle back towards the top of the nail. What can also help is by cutting very small layers of the nail like you would a garlic clove. By cutting small layers, there is less of a chance you cut too much nail all at once causing your dog's nail to bleed. Let me know if this makes sense and helps!

Did you not demo the guard for using a dremmel for dog nails because you don’t like it?

i have a question what do you do when your dogs nails have not been cut in like 10 years cause thats the case with my dog and i have the Pedi Paws nail trimmer which i have not used with cause im kind of scared to use it cause im scared i might cut the wick should i get clippers or should i be fine using the Pedi Paws Nail Trimmers i have taken her to the groomers but they have told me that her nails cant be cut because her nails have not been cut in so long what should i do?

That's a great question Sarah, thanks for asking it. I would recommend using the Dremel which you have right now. Yes, your dog's quick is likely very long but you could take a tiny bit of nail off every couple of days. This can help build both your confidence and your dog's comfort with having their nails trimmed. Over time, the quick will recede until they are of a normal length. Take it slow, be consistent, and you'll be great!

Is it normal for dogs to Yelp when your clip their nails? I tried but I’m so scared of hurting my baby.I just ordered a chewy nail filer for her. Are nail filers a slow process or a fast process?
@workingcanineclub766
@workingcanineclub766 3 жыл бұрын
It can be normal for the dogs for a couple of reasons. First, you may be cutting the nail to short causing bleeding which would create discomfort. If this was happening, you would know because there would be blood. The second reason and more likely is your dog knows if they yelp, you'll likely stop the nail cutting process. To help your dog become more comfortable with nail cutting start spending time every day massaging your dog's paws and putting pressure on their nails. Finally, I generally find that nail filers are a slower process which many people feel allows for more control. A word of caution would be to make sure to not hold the filer onto the nail for to long as the nail will heat up from the friction which can cause discomfort for your dog. Hope that helps and let me know how it goes! 😄🐕

@@Pinkbunsa So happy to hear you were able to file your dog's nails down successfully. Keep up the regular massaging of their paws to help build confidence around nail care. :)

I have pomeranian who will yelp as if he is getting hurt ia when u clip the nail. So I have my mother(ex dog groomer) do his nails which led to the discovery of him lying about the pain. When he realized he was caught the look on his face was priceless. See my mom was just about to cut the nail. So the nail wasn't even in the nail trimmer yet and he let put this yelp that would cause any dog mom to run to his rescue but I could see plain as day now he's been playing me the whole time. I started laughing so hard it i truly believe embarrassed him. Since then I've been able to cut his nails he doesn't fight it or yelp about it . I still laugh when I think about it.

Oh man, that's so funny! Our fluffy light monsters can be quite the riot at times can't they. One of the dogs I was raising didn't like the sound of her nails being clipped so I used straight noodles to acclimate her to the sound. Give that a shot as well to help decrease your Pomeranian's stress around getting her nails clipped. Let me know if it helps. 🐕

Thanks for the video! My Ridgeback in the past few months had suddenly become wary of getting her nails trimmed, am I'm clueless as to why. She runs away if she even sees my clippers. She's never had her quick clipped, so all of her trimmings in the past were positive. I've also had 2 groomers and my vet attempt to trim, and none were successful. Any ideas on how I can work to resolve this other than a place that offers a sedation service?

I would work first on getting your dog used to having their paws touched and played with. Once they become more comfortable with their paws being handled, I would then reintroduce the clippers and play with your dogs paws with the clippers, do this without actually cutting any nails. Once the two of you are able to do this work on cutting one paw or even nail at a time to keep the situation positive. Try this out over the next two weeks and let me know how it goes! :)

I know this is a year late but I have the same problem with one of my dogs. He was fine to start but began to actively run away from anyone holding any style of clippers. I never hit the quick, always used sharp clippers, and I was the only one doing his nails as I didn't want there to be even a slim chance of it being a traumatizing experience. Turns out he's a tender footed boy and didn't like the pressure exerted on his nails by the blades when they cut. Think about it, when you clip your own nails and get too close, or try to take off too much at once, you can feel how the clippers bend and warp your nail. Both types of clippers DO exert a level of pressure. Once we switched over to the dremmel & re-acclimated him to getting work done on his feet it's been smooth sailing.
