I am in Central California and you are not alone! All the local thrift stores have gone WAY up in price. So much so a lady next to me at one store asked for the manager and she asked him what was going on with the pricing. He stated that just like everything else prices are going up! She answered him back rather gruffly “ How could free possible go up?” Ugh !

My area too! South La. free donations = raise the price? 😮A kids book in my store was $3 the store barely had anything, and it was more than I would pay. We call them garage sales here, (individual sells their goods from their home) probably could get a better price going that route. That’s my plan

In .CA. bay area, and yes prices are up. Target items w/ Target discount price tags on. Goodwill selling it higher! Dollar Tree items are 1.99 or more. You love the lamp you should get it, had a timeless lovely style.

You’re right, everything seems to have increased in price. It feels greedy to me, everything is donated so there’s no manufacturing cost. Even some of the very well worn clothing seems highly priced.I think there’s better deals to be had on Facebook marketplace. It’s a shame because the charities are pricing themselves out.

Are usually swing by the Goodwill from time to time since it’s right around the corner but it’s filled with a lot of things that are going to the Landfield. I look at things that I may possibly be interested in and roll my ass because I know I can find it somewhere else brand new. I’m going to try some of the shops nearby and see how they are pricing items.

I'm in Tulsa, and our Goodwills have been so bare for several months. What little they do have is significantly overprice -- perhaps 70%-80% of the brand new price. In fact, a few items were priced higher than I could have purchase them brand new. Why are all the stores so bare?

I totally agree with you. Goodwill has up their prices like retail stores. 😒 I’m not a reseller. I thrift for my home decor, being a single mother this is a great and inexpensive way to shop for my home. So it blows my mind to see Goodwill do this to their customers. I did venture out and thrifted at another thrift shop and I got so many great and beautiful items. I also went to the swap meet this weekend and I was amazed at the items I got for little money. Goodwill is tripping. Lol That lamp was beautiful you should go back.

Hi Valerie, I too think the Goodwill is OVER PRICED! I happened to go there the other day. I picked up a few tops, a pair of Mossimo jeans, and walked out of there spending $60 and some change. It drives me crazy after spending a good amount of money, and then they ask "would you like to round your total up to the next dollar"? I always say "no" because that change goes into my savings. I told my husband I'm going to stop shopping there, because it's gotten too expensive. I apologize for ranting. Thank you for sharing. Go back for that lamp, in case you regret it. ☺🤗

I used to regularly shop at Goodwill's, but since the covid shutdowns things have changed. I have 4 area Goodwill's that are pretty bare (except for clothing) and what they have are over-priced. I can go to Target and buy new for the same. Our Goodwill's take your money for full cost to be put on hold for 24 hours. If you take longer, you lose that money. They don't hold for free. I think there are more people buying since covid and reselling now. I don't understand the huge mark-up though, since it's not like they have a shortage or supply issue. Idk maybe all employees got a raise. 🤷‍♀️

I agree, thrift store prices are out of control. I worked for Salvation Army for a few years. We were supposed to aim for around one third of what an item would have cost new, dependent upon condition. As far as people thinking it’s free to the store, the item was donated, yes, but they do have expenses. Employees, utilities, rent, those all have to be paid in top of trying to make something for whatever charity they support. Many of them will also pick up items, so there are also expenses for purchasing their trucks, fuel, upkeep etc.

The interest in second hands items has increased probably about 1000% Many DIY project people want to recreate, dupes mainly motivated by YT, Tiktok, and Instagram influencers In another hand, the economy and the high cost of living have a huge influence Even though the prices have increased it's still cheaper than big stores' prices. Second hands stores are franchises and Im sure it's a basis of offer and demand. Expect prices to continue to increase even more. I'm personally not a fan or a frequent buyer of second hands stores or items my feeds have been inundated with them. to the point that I'm feeling very curious now and questioning myself if I should go lol

Oh the prices here in Tampa are just ridiculously high! I’ll find Target stuff with the actual price tags still on and you can guarantee that the thrift store still sells it for atleast 1/2 when it’s stuff that we typically would buy for that price in store! The clothes are usually priced good plus certain days you get 1/2 off but the home decor is so high and it’s donated for free! I donate so much stuff at my local thrift store and I’m just in awe when I see how high the prices have gotten! I really hope the proceeds help sheltered women!! I totally feel you in this video and I don’t think the prices will be dropping anytime soon! It’s sad to me

I could go on and on about how thrift stores have changed over just the past ten years: prices, quality (within the parameters of being a thrift store), and variety of items. My husband and I went to a Goodwill Outlet store yesterday, and while that is always hit or miss, we have noticed that most of what they have is truly headed to the landfill. And they just recently increased their pricing again. Even the Goodwill retail store is lacking in decent resale items. I can only speculate that the lack of items is due to the overall inflation that has been going on, and that more and more people are looking to thrift in an attempt to spend as little as possible. On another subject, I just got lumber for your distressed bench project. Will be a few weeks before its attempted and the lumber was still pretty damp and is now in the house in front of the heater. Am very excited to jump in and do it.

I feel like this happens anytime there’s an economic downturn. I completely understand supply and demand, but thrift stores get most of their products donated and it makes no sense to price gouge the population that tend to shop at thrift stores: people who cannot afford or don’t want to pay retail prices for things. I remember back in the last recession I completely stopped thrifting for a while because they’d try to sell old, faded clothing for more than it costs new at target! That was off putting quite honestly.

I’ve noticed the prices at my St. Vincent DePaul have become ridiculous. I bought an overpriced bird bath last year because I really liked it. When I mentioned the price to the lady at the register, she actually told me that if one of their employees(volunteers) wants an item, they’ll overprice it, hoping that it doesn’t sell so that person can buy it later 😮. I don’t think that’s why all the prices are up but it definitely was the case for the bird bath. Maybe if people stop thrifting, the prices will come back down to where they should be.
