The thing is, Ant is being double-teamed everytime he gets the ball, which is also due to his unprecedented run during the playoffs last year. He also can't get enough catch-and-shoot chances because teams know he has a 40% 3pt, no other player in their starting lineup can collapse defense and force double teams, so every opposing team's plan is to lock him up off-ball and play 4-on-4, which is a good plan since their starting lineup consists of an old PG having his worst season, shooting 35% from the field, a 3-and-D SF that has a 30% 3pt, ball-dominant PF that is bad off-ball on both sides of the court, and a C that teams completely ignore on offense.

Good video. Ant (and Randle too) is playing in a terrible offensive environment with poor spacing and not enough playmaking around him, but Ant himself isn't making the good, quick reads that we've seen SGA and Tatum make against us. It's been frustrating for him and for us to watch. Another thing I've never heard anyone bring up about Ant is that his handle is fairly insecure for someone with high ball usage. He struggles at times to wriggle through tight gaps in driving lanes. Per bballref he's averaging 1.15 lost ball turnovers per game, which is a number that's a far cry from elite ballhandlers like Luka and SGA and more similar to other shaky ballhandling wings (e.g Lavine at 1.10 and funnily enough, Randle at 1.06). You've pointed out that Ant's passing out of the double/blitz is subpar, but he's also way too quick to pick up his dribble when defenses commit two at him, and when he does nobody tends to move toward him to receive the pass and help him out of a pickle. It's a shitty situation all around.

One thing is true, and hilariously not accepted by a certain group of Wolves fans-- this has nothing to do with the Kat trade. Nothing, nada, zilch. Jaden's flat lining offense, MCs dramatic regression, and the lack of a break (two consecutive international off-seasons and a deep playoff run last season) has left him pressing/tired/burnt out. He'll be fine, but he desperately needs some help from his coach. Finch is a good coach, but so was Doug Collins. Ant is at the trickiest part of his development, transferring individual greatness into the transcendental sort which elevates the entire team. That's very challenging, and he's still young -- the coach needs to be his partner in this, or we need to find another coach who is capable of it. Golden State was good, then they hired Kerr and became great. The Bulls were good, then they hired Phil Jackson who unlocked that level 10 and became great.

Point Ant has a ways to go. It's not the true position for NAW or DDV and Conley being inconsistent this season is a glaring factor. Add in Dilly being pretty raw and suffering ankle issues and we have a real floor general problem. CP3 is older and more injury prone that Conley, but still facilitates effectively
@kgtd21602 күн бұрын
I think the answer is extremely simple: he has no spot on the floor he wants to go constantly. All the other superstars in the league have that spot they constantly go to to get an easy bucket. Not only does Ant not have this spot, his dribble moves lead him to nothing since he has no intention in the first place. He starts busting out moves just hoping that he can get past his defender just to be met by another one and he stops. This is probably the main reason why he can't get easy buckets and the offense struggles as a whole. When Ant touches the ball, it gets sticky. Same thing with Randle. They constantly try to take things into their own hands and play iso ball which is something the team clearly does not want them to do. They also do not move off ball at all. I've watched Finch for his entire career with different players and it was always the same stagnant offense for the majority. When the ball moves, they are a good team. When the ball sticks, they suck. And if the coaching staff can't get this message across, then fire them.
@mikehamack6347Күн бұрын
Maybe the coaching staff is, fire all the players.
@Eastra32 күн бұрын
It has a lot to do with spacing, but spacing is way more than 3 point shooting. Matter fact, 3 point shooting isn't even the #1 space creator. Screening, drawing doubles, and hard cutting all do more to generate spacing than simply shooting 3s. The thing is, to capitalize on good screening, drawing doubles, and cutting, your whole team needs to pass the ball on time and on target. As a Lakers fan, my team was playing like trash for a good 15 games this year, and after they got almost a week off and a lot of practice in, they aren't making a lot of the same dumb mistakes on either side of the ball. I know its hard to get practice in with all the games the NBA has crammed in for their TV deals, but that just means that the players need to take it upon themselves to study film more on their off time. To blame 3 point shooting as a reason for ANT struggling is not a good take. The T-Wolves are one of the best 3 point shooting teams in the league. Maybe that's because their bench unit carries their 3 point shooting; someone look that up. The thing is, you can't blame the coach or supporting players for not helping ANT when he gets doubled if ANT isn't passing out of the doubles or punishing the doubles in some manner. First ANT needs to make the right play, and then, if the ball isn't coming back around to ANT throughout the game, then 2 things need to be done: 1) Coach needs to make schematic changes so that players are at optimal angles to the player being doubled, so that ANT can make quick and easy reads when doubled. In this film, a lot of the times ANT is doubled, some of the passing lanes you think are obvious, are not as easy as you think. If you get too comfortable with those, those are steals into dunks for the other team. ANT actually waited to make the pass correctly when Tatum came to double, because had he made some of those passes sooner, those were going the other way. Tatum wasn't going to let that ball go to Randle. The real big issue I see in the offensive execution is that the ball doesn't touch the paint enough, and that's because they don't pass to Rudy when he's wide open. Now Rudy may not be the best finisher around the rim, but not passing it to him is only going to cause him to regress in that skillset. They need to make those easy plays to him and go through the growing pains, because when Rudy gets comfortable down there, they will thrive as an offense. Remember who hit that fade on the Nuggets last year lol. 2) ANT need to get into the film room, because there is a lot of ways to deal with double teams, but you have to be able to recognize defensive developments very quickly, or you can't beat the double. If you try to make the pass once the double has already gotten there, you risk turning the ball over. You also need to make good basketball moves to negate the angle where the double team is coming from, so that the 'doubler' basically has to get around his own teammate to get to you, because you attacked the opposite angle of the double, and now the 'doubler' is essentially screened from you by his teammate (primary defender). Spinning away from the double is just one of many. Driving at the person who is going to come double, catching the defender off balance, AKA splitting the double, is another one. There are more than these, but you have to make quick decisions, and most of these involve attack further into the paint, which ANT isn't doing enough of to begin with. To me it seems like he's just a young scorer who has a lot to learn, and the coaching staff hasn't had the time to help him, because ANT wasn't in this position last year, because KAT was drawing more double teams enough. Randle also can draw a lot of double teams, which he did in NY, but the T-Wolves don't feature Randle like the Knicks did, so ANT can't really play off of Randle's double teams. That's a coaching problem. You have to scheme your two best players into ways they can punish teams for doubling either one. My Lakers had that problem the past few years. Coaches had LBJ out on the perimeter when AD got doubled, and LBJ wasn't in a better position to help AD when the double hit, and either AD had to kick it out to someone the defense dictated, which was rarely LBJ, or LBJ was getting the kick out on the 3 point line, and LBJ can't blow past decent defenders like he use to, and LBJ's 3 point shot, while improved greatly over his career, is not pressure proof in the playoffs; they are as reliable as his late game FTs. LBJ being put in positions where he is a dangerously effective scorer, and in an angle where the passing lanes from the double will be to LBJ or the defense will give up back doors and corner 3s if they try to scheme to LBJ's side, will punish them for doubling AD. JJ Reddick has made it hard for teams to double team AD due to his coaching schemes. I'm not saying there is no adjustment for the example I just gave, but a lot of teams don't optimize how their stars play together. Everyone just thinks 3 point shooting is the beginning and the end solution for every problem on offense. A lot of the league has lost context to understanding offense due to the 'modern NBA' propaganda, when in fact, most of the best offenses are integrating old school concepts, and they work even better than they did back in the day due to the league making it harder to play defense.
@RejeanLacaille2 күн бұрын

One thing that has always bothered me is that Gobert likes to run right next to or into the back of Ant after he sets a screen for him. When he does this he almost always gets in the way. This wasn't to pile on Gobert, its just one of the many things that should have been at least addressed. Also, Ant is rarely on the court with three to four shooters. There is no reason he should not be on the court with DDV, NAW, Naz, and, at this point, Minott for at least 10 - 15 minutes a game minimum so he can at least get some proper spacing from time to time. Finch helps him little with the lineups he consistently plays him in.

Randle was an absolute black hole through 3 quarters against BOS and while he started to move the ball more in the 4th, I don't think Ant trusts him as an option to score effectively or pass back to attack a shifted defense. Trade Randle (for literally anything), start Naz, bring Minott off the bench, open up a 9th rotation spot for Rob. It can all click into place without Randle.

Not having Big Kat is the difference

I'm glad i've completely given up on the team. The team gave up when they traded KAT, so i did too. Now I only watch occasional videos like this to see if I was justified in giving up on them, and boy was I right. This team sucks again, and with NO upcoming draft picks, they're gonna remain terrible for the next decade. And Ant alone is obviously not good enough to carry his team alone. So I quit, life is too short to waste on rooting for failure.

The problem they have in Minnesota isn't really a problem if you watch the films. ANT is too worried about his own accomplishments/stats to pass up the ball whenever doubled or tripled. Do you want your 30pts every game with a loss or 15pts with a win? He needs to trust his teammates and pass them the ball. Watching tapes you can see how wide open his teammates are EVERYTIME he gets doubled or tripled. Too many excuses about him not having shooters or good players around him. Its literally the same guys from last year minus a few guys. I would 100% rather live with a wide open shot from a poor offensive player than a contested shot from a good offensive player. Its just basic basketball IQ. Let the player with the open shot take it and live with it. Contested shots are just pure arrogance.

Trae Young plays with 0 spacing and he makes it work because he’s much better than edwards

It’s easy for them to double team him when his teammates can’t make any shots.

Bro, its not just Xs and Os. Finch doesnt respect star players. He refuses to double stars burning them in real time and does nearly nothing to help Ant out of a slump and to put up huge numbers. No other team in the league, with a star of this calibur struggles to get shots for their guy. And Ant is the best shot creator in the league arguably. Its inexcusable. Finch is too stubborn...

In every clip rudy gobert like 3-4 steps behind the play.

He ain't a superstar, that's for sure. Superstar has maybe 1 bad game for every 20. He's had 1/3 of the games so far as bad games. Jokic, giannis, lebron, sga haven't had a bad game yet. That's a superstar.

Turn the team over to Julius Randle and he'll get you a play in spot

I called it last year. He’s too lowIQ to reach another level. Already hit his peak. Great player most of the time but far from elite and never gonna be game changing. Get used to it

Your spacing example at 1:30 shows that Ant should have shot a jump shot. Boom. Go straight up, maybe a draw a foul? No, of course not.
@prince-bm4xt2 күн бұрын
There’s 0 spacing and the wolves actually need a point guard. Also bench Rudy no offensive game whatsoever and surround ant with players that can actually hit some shots.

Finch needs to put guys on the floor that can hit the kick out three

Ant needs to stop jacking up 3 pointers! Did they trade KAT for salary reasons or did Connelly think this was a smart move? Such a stupid trade!

This is what happens when you give into the 3-pt Pandemic. ANT has regressed greatly, and is barely a Top10-15 player rn. At this rate he will never be a MVP (ie. Top-5) candidate 💀💀💀

Mike Conley NEEDS to be replaced by a competent point guard. Love Mike but he's washed and its pretty obvious
@RejeanLacaille2 күн бұрын

The gm choosing gobert and Conley over Kat is the reason why they suck not to mention bad coaching and roster rotation
@RejeanLacaille2 күн бұрын

I have faith in Connelly, but trading for Rudy because he gave up Gobert in the draft to Utah sticks out to me. Like dude you were able to eventually get Jokic, but you seem to want to glue your career to Rudy Gobert? Why? When he retires he'll be remembered for building the Nuggets championship roster, and his devotion to the Stifle Tower at the expense of everything else
