Hi, I searched GOOGLE and it indicates that the Groove-billed Ani is a tropical bird in the Cuckoo family.

That’s true! However, unlike other members of the cuckoo family they actually nest build

@@BadgerlandBirding It's in San Antonio and it used to be the sewage treatment plant back in the early 1900. It is now a 1,200-acre nature preserve that includes grasslands, wetlands, brushland, ponds, and woodlands. The lake is exclusively for wildlife viewing and does not allow fishing or recreational activities. Fly in on your way to Port Aransas to see the Whooping Cranes or stop by in April for Fiesta!

Some of those birds are a real treat to see. Scissor-tailed Flycatchers are beautiful. Great Kiskadees are colorful and I've heard they can be very noisy like Belted Kingfishers. I've heard that Anis can be rare sightings due to the short time they spend.The size of the bill and tail on Curve-billed Thrashers are amazing. Great-tailed Grackles have become very well established in human habitats and the bird has a very interesting history with Mesoamericans. Green Jays, Brown Jays, and Crested Caracaras would have been more treats to see.

The Brown Jays are really only found at Santa Margarita Ranch these days. All the birds you mentioned definitely give the RGV a unique vibe

@@BadgerlandBirding It was great. We made our way through some brush to get to the river on the east side of Roy G. Guerrero state park, in downtown Austin. It was packed with waterbirds. New to me were Gadwall and American Wigeon. A Snowy Egret fished and danced with outstretched wings in front of us while we hid. So good, and in the city more or less.

Hi, good morning to you from Hong Kong 🇭🇰 SAR. I am pleasantly surprised to learn that you discovered the Groove-billed Ani. Unfortunately, it’s a BROOD PARASITIC BIRD, just like all its Cuckoo-related birds around the world where they lay a single egg in the nests of other birds, and when that bird starts to mature, it has the strength to push out all other unhatched eggs out of the nests.
@BadgerlandBirdingАй бұрын
Anis actually are NOT brood parasites. They are communal nesters and have strong parental instincts
