I've had too many near misses with batteries leaking and now I try to avoid storing anything with batteries in them. Plus you also have to consider the leakage current that will be a constant drain. my main flashlights are the only things that i keep batteries in now and I regularly check them as I don't use Duracell ( mag-light warranties a free replacement if they can verify Duracell's ).

Julian Ilett I have these Baofeng handheld HAM transmitter/receiver in the vehicles that can transmit using up to 5 watts. I only use 1 watt on the GMRS radio channels though since I don't have a license yet. Even at 1 watt I get over a mile in urban environments. They are very reasonably priced and have tons of accessories for them. They now have a 7.5 watt version but I didn't want to spend that type of money on a brand I wasn't familiar with. They are def worth their space in the bag.

Nice and simple setup and will be pretty useful for slightly less extreme situations like power cuts etc. I didn't see much in the way of tools, I suspect it would be useful to have a small set of screwdrivers and a Stanley Knife for all manner of bodges.

either energizer lithium for aa, will hold for at least 10 years, or if you are old school, duracell D cells never seem to leak and hold their charge, i have some near 20 years old still working the under stairs torch, even the poundland keyring flashlights store over 10 years, so long as you get the lithium version. so much for your bugout bag if its all dead! keep some candles in it! plus an am/fm radio is needed for emergency information IMO, i prefer a manual tuning type, more sensitive and some older transmitters may be off tune a bit but functional in an emegency.

If i had a bugout bag, i would want it to work from day one... not have to charge everything up the first day,.... that probably is the most dangerous day, This could be solved by prewireing everything inside the bag. A additional advantage is that everything charges right of the bat all the time. A problem with that in turn would be that it might be very hot in the bag. A solution to this could be to replace it with a hard box with a temperature control cooling fan. The voltcraft charger is really good in this case, because it stops the charge completly. It also don´t have any led (only LCD) so it hardly consumes any power at all when the batteries are fully charged (there for don´t produce any heat or drain the battery. That is also true for most lithium charger. One thing i really would like if i have to bug out for the zombie acoplypz, is food, water and shelter. That is, water purification. Dryfood and a smal kitchen, and a smal light weight tent. Proobly 5-10 kg more.. but if you want to surive.. its not really a option. I would also rather bring a light repeater rifle.

You may want to consider something with lithium batteries/cells if you want them not to discharge so fast. Lithium primaries are good for 10+ years of storage. (I use Li primaries in some rarely used flashlights for that reason). Rechargeable lithiums tend to keep well about a year perhpas (under no load). I like the fact of being able to recharge batteries though. Something like a cheap Baofeng could replace walkie-talkie and a radio in a single package. For a real survavil situation you would need something to keep you warm and sheltered (includes fire making stuff and rain protection), means to purify water and something to eat and perhaps hunt for some extra. (In that order: freezing kills you before thirst, thirst before hunger). Something to take care of typical medical problems would be a great thing to have as well.
@roberthickman40928 жыл бұрын
Honestly a means of making clean water, secondly food/food prep and thirdly a means of keeping yourself warm would be FAR more useful in an 'end of the world' situation. These devices may find a use, but if you are going to die of thirst/get ill from dirty water/freeze to death then what's the point?

+mbaker335 For that type of deal I'd also add some kind of thing that stores digital documents/photos that are impossible to replace. Encrypt all or parts of it as you see fit, but as long as you can recover your own data from non-cloud media that's always a good last resort option to have in my opinion.

I like the little cultural differences between England and the U.S., such as the way you guys call flashlights torches, you don't seem to cuss as much as we do, the way that we each have our expressions and colloquialisms for various things, and so on. As far as electronics with dead batteries, you should remove the batteries quickly so they don't corrode your devices. I wouldn't be so quick to toss the hand crank flashlight. I have one in my ruck in addition to two regular LED flashlights and two head lamps ( when it comes to bags, I always use surplus, as military gear, especially rucks and boots, is superior to even the most highly touted civilian gear ) and you have to turn it off and a minute of cranking gives you an hour of decently bright light, or 30 minutes of full power light ( I believe yours was turned on when you cranked it and you gave it several cranks, try at least a full minute with the light switched off, then see if it works ). It sucks that you guys aren't allowed to own guns and high capacity mags there. Of course, you can own pump action, .12 gauge shotguns loaded with 10 pellet .00 buckshot, as well as hunting rifles, correct? Seeing as how there are tons of illegal pistols, AKs, etc....... on the streets of London and other cities in the U.K., if societal collapse happens, you can take what guns you are allowed, use stealth tactics, and shoot the guys that have the weapons you want ( it might sound cold hearted, but you gotta do what you gotta do ).

An FM radio isn't much use in a proper collapse, they are only local stations. What you would want in that situation is a shortwave radio. News from the other side of the world can be heard then.
@Seagull-Matthames8 жыл бұрын
+goose300183 In the UK you will be listening to BBC Radio 4 for info. If there is no Radio 4 then you can be pretty certain that there is no Government in Britain. The British Navy listen to broadcasts of Radio 4 on their submarines and if that goes off air it is part of a chain of checks they do before opening their letters of last resort from the Prime Minister which could give the orders to fire nukes in retaliation.
@goose3001838 жыл бұрын
+Matthew Bliss Yeah Radio 4 should be able to be heard on longwave at all times. It also has hidden depths. If you tune into it and put through a waterfall display, you can see a strong PSK signal underneath the audio. I've heard that the purpose of that is to control economy 7 electricity meters, but there seems to be a lot of other information transmitted too.

+GadgetUK164 "something to start a fire" why does nobody seam to think of a lighter in that situation? you could easily stick 10 cheap lighters in there and probably had a source of fire for 2 years if you use them carefully... but no, everyone needs a flint and steel, fire rod, magnefying glas etc. :D
@GadgetUK1648 жыл бұрын
Haha, yes - lighers are good for that! But you've also got to think longer term. Flint useful too - maybe replace with something electronic.
@MrOpenGL8 жыл бұрын
+muh1h1 I agree, but the only weak point of lighters is their ability to get wet easily (compared to a lens). Also the cheap ones break very easily
@extrastuff94638 жыл бұрын
+MrOpenGL Well if you want to be complete, get one or two good lighters that you verify to be working reliably (and a small butane refilling canister) and an A4 sized fresnel lens that'll easily let you start fire from sunlight as backup. And perhaps also a firesteel type thing, maybe a bit of dry starting tinder too (and put the stuff that shouldn't become wet in a plastic zip locked bag thingie). My main issue when it comes to the electronics is really with the choice of torches, it'd probably be better to cut down on the quantity but rather put 2-3 reliable torches in there. And at least one pack of lithium primaries so that right as you need it the electronics bag has what you need along with a bunch of rechargeables for longer term situations. And then the other thing I'd probably consider more important is some foodstuff that you can store for a long time, a bit of water purification stuff which combined should last you at least 2-3 days and some basic tools like a multitool.
@Markle2k8 жыл бұрын
You need a few different means to start a fire (piezo, flint and steel/Mg rod, steel wool, char cloth, slam rod), water purifier AND purification tablets, some low protein food (takes less water to metabolize). NiMH batteries need to be kept charged, Li-Ions keep their charge. And if there's no cell service, the huge radio receiver isn't likely to be useful. And I didn't see any sort of First Aid kit at all. In bad conditions a simple cut could kill in a few days. A deck of cards/some dice/pencil/Sharpie or gel pens.... Here in California, we care more about earthquakes than zombies so having a week's worth of stuff isn't fantastical. 200 ft MSL is a mile away in case of tsunami. ;-P

I don't know exactly what type of cells it has, but they work wonderfully, in fact they charge my wifes tablet faster then the AC plug does, as we found out when camping without power 7 miles north of the Mecixan border with Arizona. We were there for a week and that little charger kept both our phones active, as well as my wife's Aarchos 8 inch tablet that she uses for entertainment at night.

I think the cell network would stay up as long as power is available. Most tower communications huts have a diesel gen set with I hear ~3 days worth of fuel. Check those radios for a mini USB charge port hidden under a rubber plug. You need to toss those charger bases. A DC-DC CC supply, crock clips, and magnetic connectors would be handier. You might be able to barter for charging someone elses equipment with a universal charging rig. Maybe they can give you a turnip before you starve to death.
