Man, well said about the 45mm! I feel exactly the same way! I do a lot of street photography and couldn't believe how well suited the 45mm is for the way I shoot! I also use the Oly 17mm for when I'm closer to the action. Also a nice and sharp prime lens! Great channel!

Great bag! I have the same one with e-pl5, 17 2.8 Oly (yeah, I know its junk) 25 1.8 Oly, 60 2.8 Oly macro (don't need an adapter :), Oly Wide angle adapter (rarely use), 14-40 Oly 40-150 Oly, Viewfinder (forget the model but its a cheapo), spare battery, 2 polarizers in a separate bag clipped, spare SD (64GB, slow but free!), other assorted junk, and an FL-200R Flash (fits nicely in the long pocket). Wish I had room and money for the 75 & 45!

There's no-name bags built every bit as good as these pricier ones, and when muggers don't see known brands like 'Domke' in big bold letters on the front, they are less likely to try pull your shoulder off to get hold of it.

My main gear is micro 4/3.My budget forced me into Panasonic for now,but I have always liked Olympus.At least if I get an Olympus camera all my lenses will fit.I love that little tripod.I have a few tabletop tripods,but none like that.I also have a body cap with a pinhole.It works well but you really need camera support to use it.Plus it was cheap.

My bag content looks very similar: 3 main lens, a few filters, cleaning cloth, adaptors, and 2 extension tubes. However one thing I cannot leave without is an extra battery pack (usually 2). If I have to leave my bag somewhere I always pull out the extra battery pack and put it in my pocket....and always keep them charged. ;)

Awesome videos I just subscribed. I just recently got the Oly EM10 and loving it so far. I got the 17mm 1.8, 25mm, 45mm and the Sigma 60mm art lens f/2.8 (which I highly recommend to you) to go with the body. Sigma is relatively cheap ($209) and incredibly sharp. I'd say it's slightly sharper than the 45mm when pixel peeping. You should definitely look into it, it'll be a good bridge lens between your 45 and 70mm. I still want to add the 12mm f/2 and that 75mm beast to my kit. Look forward to your next videos. Cheers. Btw, I have a Canon 6D with 5 L lenses that I haven't touched in a year. It's so much more fun to shoot with mirrorless system.

Hey, Mark! I have a GH2 (unhacked) and I wonder what would be best for filming KZbin videos indoors (with softboxes) and some general street/portrait photography: Olympus 25 mm f/1.8 or 45mm f/1.8...or Lumix Leica Summilux 25 mm f/1.4? Looking for sharpness and bokeh, of course. I actually love the look of your videos and you said you are using the Oly 25mm for youtube. Thanks a lot, so glad I've found your channel.

Yanna Wednesday Correct, I use the Olympus 25mm for the vast majority of my video. I'd tried the 45mm at one point, but it's too long for my "studio" office. If I had more room, it could work. For your stated purposes, I definitely recommend one of the 25mm lenses. Now, Olympus vs. Panasonic, it's tough to call. If money and lens size don't matter to you, the Panasonic has some advantages -- a slightly wider aperture for more light and shallower depth of field, but it's a pretty narrow advantage. Mostly, people that have used both lenses tend to prefer the look of the Panasonic. The Olympus is generally cheaper and it's quite a bit smaller on the camera, though the difference on a GH2 might not be huge. You can't go wrong with either lens.

Hmm, is there a reason you love that old 38mm lens so much? I could get one for pretty cheap along with an adapter, but I hadn't thought about it. I live in Japan and there are tons of used camera stores where you can find stuff like that.
@Michromatic
@Michromatic 9 жыл бұрын
A few reasons why I love it so much. First is the focal length, which is just about my ideal. I also really like the solid, heavy feeling and the general handling of the lens. But what keeps me coming back to it are (1) the sharpness when stopped down to f/4, and (2) the lovely contrast and colors that come through the glass. It results in a bunch of my favorite photos. I recently did a video about my favorite photos from 2014, and the 38mm was responsible for the highest number. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hoKUdHierbeBZ9k

really like the video. I had a quick question about the 75mm tho. I tried shooting with this and it seems really inconvenient. Would you say that this focal length is a little inconvenient for the m4/3 system? I seem to have to need a lot of space between the subject to just get like a shoulders or above shot.
@Michromatic
@Michromatic 9 жыл бұрын
Proxygate It's not surprising that you say that. The 75mm is a very long lens, traditionally the sort used for portraiture or sniping shots between crowds. Inconvenient? Totally depends on your uses, but it's definitely not a do-it-all lens like the 25mm. More specialized.

+Gagan Grewal Yes, it's the FX5B. I think what you've described would be a very tight fit. I could fit my EP5 + 25mm, EM5 + 75mm and probably one or two more small lenses, but packing in the filter set, adapter rings, and batteries would be a stretch. Possible? Maybe. Easily accessible? Probably not.

Hi Mark, first thanks for your videos, I stumbled upon them while looking for a bag for my gear + GM1 and settled on the Domke, it really is great! Gear Question - I currently have the Oly 25, the panny 12-32 Kit lens, The 45-150 Panny zoom and they "toy" 35mm fujian which is a fun ultra cheap CC lens. I was kind of torn between the 15mm Summilux and the 45 Oly for my next lens, when I saw your endorsement of the F. Zuiko 38mm which I see on ebay for a pittance. Or should I save up for the 45 Oly? I have zero experience in this focal range... but enjoy street photography, and have been making do with the Oly25 so far because I love the personal feel and look of the pics it produces. Thanks! :)
@Michromatic
@Michromatic 8 жыл бұрын
+Dran Well it sounds like you've already got both the 38mm and 45mm focal lengths covered -- you can do 35mm with the Fujian and 45mm with the Panasonic zoom. The view you'll get through the two prime lenses will be essentially the same, so I think you've got what it takes to figure out if you'll enjoy those focal lengths ;) My suggestion? Even though 38mm and 45mm are different, the two lenses feel similar enough to me that I end up using only one of them, depending on if I want manual or autofocus. I generally prefer manual focus, especially if I'm out doing photography by myself. If I'm with other people and have to move more quickly, I'll stick with the autofocus lens. But it really is personal preference -- not everyone has the patience for manual focus.
@sesskie
@sesskie 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, in that case I think I may give the 38mm a shot. Even though I have 2 zooms in my kit, I definitely enjoy shooting with primes a lot more. The Fujian.. hahah, I bought it on a whim for 20 bucks, but its a gimmick lens with an interesting swirly bokeh vignetting haze around the edges and only sharpness on the centre.. twist the focus ring a little more than you should and it pops right off the adapter! :P For $20 it produces interesting pictures but nothing quite as beautiful as the F. Zuiko does, judging from what Ive seen of sample pics online! I definitely think Im getting hooked on the "Olympus look", they do make some really great glass. :)

***** An option I found to add dividers to my "Tamrac Apache 4" bag: B&H has an item called "Ruggard 45 Shoulder Bag Divider Set" (and a couple other Ruggard divider sets of different sizes) which contains 7 dividers (mine had 2 more - 9!) of various size/form - $20. VERY USEFUL for securely packing various m4/3 small primes/zooms into columns which are often much taller/wider than the lenses. I'm using the smaller 6 dividers from the Ruggard set, plus the 4 adjustable dividers that came with the Tamrac bag (2 primary column style & 2 smaller subdividers.)

I happen to have the same two cameras. :) What lens did you have on your e-pm2 while shooting the video? What is so special about the 38mm legacy Olympus? Focal length? Size? Feel?
@Michromatic
@Michromatic 9 жыл бұрын
Peter Sypek I had the Olympus 12mm on the lens while shooting the over-the-bag shot. The Olympus 38mm is my favorite for all the reasons you mentioned: Focal length suits me surprisingly well, the lens is compact like a native M43 lens, but has the satisfying heft and feel of a legacy lens. Just a joy to use. It helps that the lens gets ridiculously sharp at f/4 and renders colors so well. Here's a video I did showing my favorite photos from 2014. Unsurprisingly, the most common thread is the Olympus 38mm lens. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hoKUdHierbeBZ9k

Michromatic I love your videos and I'm glad it's a channel dedicated to the Micro 4/3 system. Anyway, a couple of questions. 1) How do you like those two lenses you mentioned, the 12mm and the 17mm? 2) Did you come from a larger dslr system? 3) If you did come from a dslr system, do you miss it?
@Michromatic
@Michromatic 9 жыл бұрын
Joe Castillo Both lenses are pretty great, for different uses each. The 12mm is great for landscapes. I personally struggle using wide angle effectively, but I'm getting more used to it. And when I want a wide shot, the 12mm has been great. The 17mm is pretty wide too, but less good at landscape. It's known for being less sharp than other Oly primes, and that matches my experience. It trades sharpness for a rendering quality that is awesome for shooting photos of people. People shots look great with the 17mm.

Hi there, will you do the video about the Pen F lens you have? I'm really curious to know what's the equivalence in digital sensor with those focal lenses, seeing how the wiki page says that a 25mm Pen F lens is equivalent to a 35mm on a 35mm film camera.
@Michromatic
@Michromatic 9 жыл бұрын
Xavier Fajardo I haven't done any videos about the lens specifically, but I show a lot of shots I've gotten with it in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hoKUdHierbeBZ9k As for the focal length equivalence, you're confused in a common way. The lens is 38mm -- regardless of which system it was made for, it's 38mm. On a Micro 4/3 camera, it will give the same field of view as a 76mm lens on a full frame camera. I'm going to have to do a video explaining it better, it's frustrating that this method of describing field of view is so convoluted. The short answer to your question, though, is that a 25mm lens is always a 25mm lens. The "mm" measurement doesn't change between systems. If you want to compare field of view between Micro 4/3 and full frame, it doesn't matter which system the lens came from. A 25mm Pen-F lens, a 25mm Micro 4/3 lens, and a 25mm full frame lens will all give you the same field of view IF they're attached to the same camera.
@XavierFajardo
@XavierFajardo 9 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for taking the time to explain this, I'm new to photography and I do have a hard time figuring the focal view between one system and the other. So what I understand is that the distance the light travels through the lens and hits the sensor is what those millimeters stand for and the the field of view it can capture?

@Michromatic
@Michromatic 9 жыл бұрын
M7mmed Yousef iPad Mini fits, but it's pretty tight. Should be a pretty easy fit if you don't have a case on the iPad. With a case, it just doesn't slide in/out super smoothly.

It is the Joby Micro Hybrid. Be careful -- there's also a Joby Micro (NOT Hybrid) that is probably too-lightweight for Micro 4/3 cameras.

@Michromatic

Most videos are recorded with a Giant Squid lav mic. For my most recent videos, I've been recording into a Zoom H1 -- I was previously recording straight into the camera but didn't like the results with the lav mic.

Are there any good cheap zoom lenses for micro 4/3 cameras?
@Michromatic
@Michromatic 8 жыл бұрын
+StarTrek123456 The Panasonic 14-42mm ii is considered the best cheap zoom lens. There's also a Panasonic 12-32mm which is a bit wider, and also top image quality.
@TheJohnlclark
@TheJohnlclark 8 жыл бұрын
I find the Panasonic 14-45mm to have better image quality than the 14-42mm ii. The 12-32mm is very good too and I like the wide FOV.

looking for a new camera, can anyone tell me the advantages/disadvantages of micro 4/3rds vs aps-c mirrorless cameras
@Michromatic
@Michromatic 9 жыл бұрын
+David Buckley Biggest difference is size vs. image quality balance, which is the same difference between all mirrorless and DSLR. APS-C cameras have some image quality advantages thanks to their bigger sensors, while Micro 4/3 as a system is still much smaller. Depends on how you like that balance, and at what point you're done trading image quality for compactness. There are other differences, including lens selection, prices, etc. For me, the big feature I like for Micro 4/3 is the in-body image stabilization in Olympus cameras. I have the most fun when I'm shooting with old lenses adapted to my camera, and having in-body image stabilization is a huge, huge benefit. I would seriously miss it if I ever used a Sony or Fuji mirrorless camera. (There's a decent chance Sony will add in-body stabilization to their A6000 line in the future.)
@Federico84
@Federico84 9 жыл бұрын
i don't really like olympus lenses, they are not stabilized so not really useful on panasonic bodies, maybe only wide lenses like the 25 mm, even shooting with a 42 mm is not so easy without ois
@Michromatic
@Michromatic 9 жыл бұрын
Tecnovlog If you shoot Panasonic cameras, yeah, that's definitely a drawback for Olympus lenses. Both of my cameras have stabilization built into the body, so I don't mind that the lenses don't have it.

+Michromatic +Tecnovlog The Panasonic Lumix GX8 can now compensate those Olympus lenses with its in body stabilization or am I incorrect in saying that?
@Rushfan74

That's why I grabbed the GX8. I can now use both Panasonic and Olympus lenses and not worry about stabilization.

@Michromatic
@Michromatic 8 жыл бұрын
+marcin n Hopefully by then you've got a sense for what you want to accomplish. You could do everything with the 25mm and 45mm, or you could find that you really want a wide angle, or really want a telephoto for wildlife. Lots of room for personal preference. Focus on the result you want to get, and what you current gear isn't doing for you.
