What's in my ELK HUNTING Day Pack?

When it comes to archery elk hunting, I like to go light! I don't like to carry a bunch of stuff which can weigh me down over a long day of hiking in rugged mountains. Here's a quick overview of the elk hunting pack list I carry with me on a typical archery day hunt for elk in the Rocky Mountains. In a later video I'll be doing a detailed Peregrine 3500 review.
We'll start with the pack itself. This is the Peregrine 3500 from Seek Outside. It's the lightest 3500ci pack on the market today. But it's also built tough and strong enough to use as a meat hauler as I did last september. This pack held up and supported loads of around 100lbs extremely well.
Some of the hunting gear inside my pack include my bugle tube, water filter, BOT, knife sharpener, head lamp, emergency survival kit, game bags, extra camo layers, a small MSR pocket stove, etc.

Great video Clay. I would like to add that duct tape is about the best thing to use to cover bandages or padding over a blister. It just doesn't come off.....even with perspiration!! Learned this trick from your kin folk...Appalachian trail hikers :)

Hi Clay, I wanted to offer some perspective from a different direction. I'm a trad bow hunter but I also just completed the Pacific Crest Trail, and long distance hikers are about the pickiest people you can find when it comes to reducing unnecessary weight and bulk, plus 150+ consecutive days on trail puts a lot of them at a very high experience level. With that in mind, I'd switch water filters from MSR to either a sawyer mini or sawyer squeeze. It will be lighter and smaller and they make up about 95% of the filters you'll see on any long distance trail. I think a ferro rod is less useful than just carrying a second BIC mini lighter, and I think a cell phone works fine as the backup flashlight. Also, since you already have the Vargo BOT, consider looking into cold soaking. It's definitely not for everyone, but it's a great way to cut down the weight of your cook system. I've got to say, most hunters go way overboard on gear and redundancies. Your bag dump already has more in common with long distance hikers than any hunting loadout I've seen on KZbin and I really appreciate your bringing the ultralight philosophy into the hunting game.

A great lightweight water filter is the Sawyer Squeeze mini. I have an MSR also, but generally don’t carry because the Sawyer is so much lighter

Thanks for All of your great films and inspiration. A little idea /tip/whatever 🙂: I'm from Denmark and do a lot of fishing and trad bowhunting. In general, with exception of af few months, the weather is cold! Cold and windy. I found that the best way to boost my mental and physical capasity is hot cocoa with a little cinnamon. Off course it's a matter of personale taste, but I really helps getting warm back if you start getting cold. In general along with a piece of dark chokolate. Anyway, just my little tip, Thanks again for your great films 🙂

Enjoyed your videos never been elk hunting would love to go some day ,I've had 3 back surgeries ,those mountians may be kind of tough, I always carry a roll of electric tape ,a small roll waxed I think it's trot line string about 50' works great for stringing between trees about 3'off the ground hang small brush on it for quick temporary ground blinds .I also will roll about 10' to 15' of duct tape up an carry it with me me great for repairs ,ripped clothing back pack ,boots ,I use that gorrila tape it's the best I've found kinda of pricey . Clay, I'm curious as to why you don't carry a water bladder. You mentioned weight as the biggest reason why you don't carry water with you as well as bringing a filter and hunting area that have water that typically available. To me water is one of those things that I'll gladly bear the burden of carrying. As you consume it weight is reduced. Water is never a given when hunting.

I have a question about how quiet the pack is when you draw and shoot your bow. I also hunt with traditional equipment, and the pack I currently have sounds like sandpaper being rubbed together when I draw my bow. It's great at spooking game. How does this one measure up?

Another great video. Some things I notice as absent and am curious. No critique here!!! Matches or lighter. I did notice the back up ferro rod. Map. Perhaps you are in very familiar country or believe in what goes up must come down. Lol Snacks or food? I noticed medical tape... anything else e.g. 2x2 gauze or kerlex or... Maybe engineer tape to mark your trail or location.

Good eye! I always have a light in my pocket, as well as a pocket knife. I usually don’t carry a map in out elk territory. It’s big open mountain/valley country where it would be nearly impossible to get lost. Plus I’ve been hiking it for years and know nearly every nook and cranny. I don’t usually carry food except perhaps some trail mix. As for medical supplies, I figure extra layers could be used as gauze in combination with the tape. One could argue sanitation but in the woods nothing is going to be sterile.

@@clayhayeshunter my friend you are talking to the choir. All good points!! Having spent nearly 29 years as a combat medic and 16 of those as a Special Forces Medic, I must suggest you consider a military triangular bandage (cravat). Don't bother with the civilian versions. I'm not even going to explain why although I have PLENTY of anecdotal stories about them. With a Cravat I can: stop arterial bleeding in your leg in less than 5 seconds with a cravat tourniquet. I can plug gashes and wrap a pressure bandage. I can cover a broad, wide injury. I can sling your arm, I can tear it into strips and make a leg splint... Look, the army cravat is a huge asset to your medical tape. I did a couple of videos on lifting a load because you are interested in that. I'll do a video or two on the use of the army cravat and show you what I mean. They come sealed in plastic (not sterile just dry and also have 2 safety pins). I would say trust me but you don't know me and I did work for the government... lol
