Things I found useful to lug around in my flight bag - a lot of cheap pens and golf course pencils from various hotels....not for me but for cabin staff who lend them out to pax to use in filling out documents or crossword puzzles etc. Small micro-fiber cleaning cloth for glasses and EFB. I also carry a small legal note pad with the tear-off pages in case I have to write a note to FAs.-I do like your notebook idea though for your needs. I also have 12 inch zip-ties (the things used to bundle electrical cables) that are very useful for temporary repairs to suitcases and such. Since I fly for a large US carrier I have small pad of Post-It notes I use to write the name of the cabin staff and FO, flight info on & stick it on the panel for very quick reference which saves me from fumbling PA announcements or on the inter-phone. Spare ID lanyards, sun glass straps, a few band-aids, small address book for noting resturants/stores by city.....spare wings/nameplate/shoulder boards.

Thanks Michelle, if you ever wondered how the Hi-Vis jackets came about, a boring story for you... I originally recommended that colour to be used for safety jackets having seen research done by Lancaster University, UK into possibly changing the colour of fire engines in the UK from red into another colour to be more noticeable. The fire service stayed with the red and safety jackets at that time were usually a dayglo orange that you couldn't see under sodium lighting. I saw the yellow/lime colour stood out more under most types of lighting, and voila, the safety jacket was born...

Passport, backup torch (flashlight), iPad (for approach charts), mobile device backup battery, miniature flight crew log (I transfer the data into my actual logbook once I get back home so that I never take the risk that my logbook gets stolen), sunglasses, lots of pens, paper charts as a backup to the electronics, spare Garmin GNS-430 Data Card, spreadsheet containing all the airport gate codes for every place I have been, mobile phone, aspirin (for emergency in case of heart problems at altitude), kneeboard, spare cockpit checklist, small pads of paper, hair comb(s) (I always seem to lose them), kitchen sized plastic trash bags, microfibre lens cloth, small plastic food bags, lots of coins that I get in change, FitBit charger, spare miniature bottles of shampoo from hotel rooms in sealed plastic bag, spare car key, spare aircraft key, piece of black cloth to put on top of glare shields if the glare shield has lost a lot of its black paint.

1:36 I carry a good old Casio as well, and I'm just an engineer. Phone calculators are trash, real calculators are for getting real things done!
@robertgutheridge96724 жыл бұрын
I was 15 tango air crew chief on a black hawk. And calculator is definitely important. As part of my job was calculating total cargo weight and fuel. With air temp and density. Since the black hawk can mid air refuel it's common to take off with a light fuel load then top up once airborne.

Cockpits are very dirty due to the limited number of personnel allowed in. So the only cleaning that gets done is either by maintenance personnel that know how to operate the switches or the pilots. The regular between flight cabin cleaning doesn't include the cockpit.

I'm completely impressed with your videos along with Mentour Pilot and Captain Joe. It is nice to see. With professionals like yourself, I think we old guys will be taken care of. My initial thought when I started viewing one of Mentour Pilot's videos was that of skepticism or sarcasm but quickly realize that even the best actor couldn't remember all the terminology and then what all those terms and phrases meant! I have learned a couple things and a lot of stuff I have not seen since flight school and ground school back in 2000!

(There’s a question in here, too. Bear with me!) Hi, I’m brand new to this channel, I’ve basically finished all of Captain Joe and Mentour’s video’s up to this point! I’m guessing the iPad is for your EFB? I’m actually trying this out myself, I’ve downloaded an EFB called OzRunways (or OZ RWY whatever), should give you a hint as to where I’m from! And I’m trying it out. The first thing that struck me is that there are a good couple hundred databases to download! So many that my family complained about the internet connection while I was pulling 6 or 7MB/s for nearly an hour... but the nice thing about this EFB in particular it seems, is that you can use it on the iPhone - as I don’t yet have an iPad. Yes, I activated a 30 day trial just because I was bored. But I found out that I live within a few kilometres of the BURPA waypoint so I answered a 20-year-old question of why I seem to be directly under a flight path. Seems to be one of the approaches into YBBN, which funnily enough, has a new runway being built, so it looks like we’re gonna have PRM or even SOIA approaches soon - if we haven’t got them already! I’ve never been witness to such an approach into the airport though. Might look that up in the EFB, why not... also no I do not mind people knowing where my local waypoint is because “within a few kilometres” encompasses several thousand addresses. :P Question about this, though. I actually know where this waypoint is - it’s on a local college campus and you can simply walk around the buildings - I used t study IT there, and there is nothing to do with aeronautics whatsoever. The waypoint is also directly behind a highway I use almost every day! If I go and actually look for this waypoint - will I actually find anything physical? Will there be some form of VOR/DME or NDB antenna there? It seems a bit small for a VOR/DME antenna array but it would be interesting if there was an NDB beacon there. Will I find anything, of are these waypoints literally just dots on a map and nothing more? Sorry to ramble on, hah. Quite the first few videos so far!

I know what calculators you have on there. Even a scientific one, if with smaller buttons. 4:39 You don't have everything on your iPad then? It would save on paper.
