I think granulation is what makes watercolor interesting and I often hear artists talking how great the granulation and separation of colors are. Makes an art piece pop. That is why Daniel Smith is great. One color in particular that is amazing is moon glow by Daniel Smith. It has amazing granulation and color separation.

Moonglow was the color that got me on the DS train. Like “well, I can’t not have a color called Moonglow” and then before I know it I was buying a bunch more. 😆
@HeavenlyBrujo2 жыл бұрын
Granulation is good when you try to emulate textures or achieve some effects, so it's not good all the time. And Moonglow is an amazing color, but it's a fugitive one.

I have just bought loads of DS for granulation. It's changed my style entirely. I love moon glow but the red disappears with just a little exposure to light and becomes a little flat looking. . There is a video on here how to mix moon glow.

@@barbaraconnolly9000 Yeah. Unfortunately poor Moon Glow is fugitive 😔

Thank you for explaining your palette. I love the effect of granulating colours for landscapes and seascapes but as you say, it just depends what style and subjects people like to paint.

I mainly use Daniel Smith and Windsor Neuton, but I agree Windsor red is the best red! I am learning watercolors after using acrylics for many years. I love your painting style Emma!

I love Alizerin Crimson, it makes so many interesting shades when you mix it with different yellows and blues. 😊 The brown madder is pretty! I've never seen that before. 😊

Thank you for the video. It's funny all of the pinks and purples you don't use are my favorites! 😂 That's why we happily have so many color choices. 😊

I feel the same about Opera Pink. I put it in my pallet to see if I could find a use for it, and so far I think I’ve used it twice. It works nicely as a highlight for certain purples. I used it as a base layer for some grapes and thought it looked pretty nice. Thank you for sharing. It’s nice to hear other people’s thought process on why they chose certain colors.

Thanks for the update! I love Prussian Blue - it is very versatile. I also have Opera Pink for the sole purpose of mixing with other colors- I don't use it alone. Mixing OP with Dix Violet makes a beautiful lavender range. I believe it OR is worth the cost for mixing purposes, if it is in your budget to do so.

@Emma Jane Lefebrve if you like the French Ultramarine color but not the granulation. M Graham is supposed to be smoother because of the honey. You might try it when you run out.

Thank you Emma! I have a pallet like yours, but at this point in time I would have 2/3 Cotman 1/3 WNP. I'm a beginner so not yet ready to do... I've bought colors because of the dot cards... just bright, vivid colors I just love. I'm a beginner gramma but play like our grandchildren. Having fun... try tutorials... but really enjoy all of it. Watching you create is wonderful! Blessings to you and your family, have a great weekend... try to get your legs up while relaxing .HA! WHAT'S THAT? Be good to yourself! Love fro a grateful California gramma 😄🌴🌺✨🌘

Question- Do you spray your finished paintings with an acrylic sealer to preserve them?
@dorisswackhamer39832 жыл бұрын
When you buy paints in a tube do you empty it into your palate/ or leave in the tube?
@debmarie552 жыл бұрын
Most people fill the palette with a good squeeze from the tube, then add more as you use it up. I personally find that using watercolor straight from the tube is wasteful, as the color is usually much too intense, and needs to be watered-down in most applications. Allowing your tubed watercolors to dry in a palette allows you to re-wet and mix in a mixing palette to achieve the gentle pastel washes used in most watercolor paintings. If you want a more intense color, like for highlighting, then you just pick up more pigment with your brush and darken the wash in your mixing palette.

I do have a question, total newbie here. I noticed you squeeze paint out of the tubes into each little section. It dries (I imagine) then you re activate it with water. Can you do this with most all watercolour tube paint? Or, just Winsor & Newton?
@beadsbylara2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can do that with all tubes. Some will dry super hard and others may stay kinda tacky.
@EmmaLefebvre2 жыл бұрын
Beware of some cheaper brands. They tend to crack and fall out if you squeeze them in a palette and let them dry. (I’m talking the Michaels artist loft brand type of tube colours)
