My dad made a living making bags or pouches from the early mid seventies all the way till he passed in 2018. He probably made close to a couple of hundred of them over the years. He would work on the custom one for days. I remember in the about 79 or 80 he and my mom made several hundred production pouches for either Track of the wolf or maybe Log Cabin.

I've made probably about a dozen bags now, just sold another one recently so it's time to make one just because I don't want to have so many around that I don't use. I have two I use with my guns, one is a smaller bag that's Native American style since I'm about 1/4 Mohawk. That one had a beaver fur flap, some beadwork and I use that one with my smoothbore guns. I have a leather shot pouch, keep some tools and flints in it and my powder measure is made from a deer that I shot a couple years back and the shot measure I got from another Mohawk a couple years back. I just added a small antler handled patch knife that I sewed on the back of it. My larger pouch I made not that long ago, but also Native American style with hairpipe beads and fringe. That one goes with my rifles and has an antler powder measure I made along with a homemade nipple pick. I've made some other pouches here and there, I saw a really nice raccoon pelt pouch worn by a French-Canadian and was pointed to an original style that was done with an otter, which was a style shared with the French-Canadians as well as the Abenaki, the Wyandot and also the Iroquois. I have quite a few books and have seen a few real pouches in museums here in the northeast, one was a small pouch I saw that had a Fleur de Lis style carving into the flap and the pouch was all leather and square. I also have another Native American style pouch, that one was brain tanned buckskin with some beadwork I did on the flap. I've made some out of goatskin and a few other things, but you're right, once you start, you're not going to stop.

I thought it was interesting that Arlfred Miller's paintings from the 1830s show simple bags, often with fringe and narrow straps. Some might have been decorated with quills. It didn't seem like trappers wanted to fancy of gear. Could be they had to replace it often and it was disposable or they didn't want to call attention to thieves much the way we think today.
@thedeerskindiary3 ай бұрын
Great theories. I don’t actually know myself either. I would like to think that they ornate bags were used but Cresswell’s was in a trunk. He wasn’t much of a hunter though so maybe place in life had a lot to do with it.
@Bayan19053 ай бұрын
If you look at the 1776 mezzotint engraving of Robert Rogers by Thomas Hart, he had a bag that was of Native American influence. How accurate that was is anyone's guess but I'm willing to bet there was some trading going on back and forth and spoils of war to go along with it when it came to bags, guns, etc.
@thedeerskindiary3 ай бұрын
The blending of the cultures fascinates me. Tracie buys one and Cresswell keeps one in a trunk.

If a lady is allowed to have more than one purse, you should be allowed more than one shot pouch. Most people I know have a pouch for each gun. That way, the mold and everything the gun requires stays with it. A Once again, thanks for your insights.

There are and from what little I have collected you actually see more of them in period paintings than other styles. If you look on Wikimedia Commons and search for 18th century hunting and other similar search parameters you will find them on European hunters. They are not my preferred style so I have not looked for much admittedly.
