What’s In My Wallet (UPDATED - Q4 2023)

In this video we are talking about what’s in my wallet for the end of 2023 and what my overall credit card strategy is at the moment. I have 17 active credit cards, but I’m only using a few of them on a daily basis in my everyday credit card setup. I’ve been using some of the best credit cards on the market that earn me a ton of points and miles that I use like to redeem for travel, so hopefully this video gives some more information about how I do that!
My setup mainly consists of a lot of Chase credit cards and American Express credit cards, but I also have a few others mixed in as well like the Bilt Mastercard, the Citi Custom Cash, and a new catch all credit card thanks to a special email offer I received. My credit card setup and what’s in my wallet is constantly changing, but these are my best credit cards right now!

Same! Discover It for the 5% categories during my first year when they match the cash back, Chase Sapphire Preferred for travel, Amex Gold for food and most other things. I cant imagine juggling more than that!

Love to hear that you've upgraded to the CSR! Definitely makes a ton of sense being in Austin and I've heard of many other people there doing the same for that Sapphire terrace lounge! I'm hoping that I can get lucky and maybe come across Chase offering a limited time elevated CSR bonus next year because I feel like the card is overdue for one haha but we'll see!

I usually try to pay for a meal out and some utilities on Rent Day with the Bilt Card, since all their categories besides rent double on that day. Then you easily reach the five minimum purchases while still getting maximum value back on purchases.

Are you getting the Chase Ink Preferred before downgrading the CSP to the Freedom just in case you don't get approved so you still have one Chase premium card to use for travel? Otherwise there is no reason for your order of operations.

Thank you Lisa, I really appreciate hearing that! So yes for me the order or operations matters here because if I downgrade my CSP first and then get denied for the Ink Preferred, then things are different because I would lose access to transfer partners in that situation. So I want to get approved for the Ink Preferred first, then downgrade CSP, then after a few months or a special offer I would apply for a new Sapphire Card (most likely CSR). That way throughout that whole process I never lose access to transfer partners because the CIP has them as well 👍

Downgrading is beneficial so you can keep that line of credit open. It's shows longevity. It's one of five factors that counts towards your credit score. And when you downgrade you're often eliminating your annual fee.

I think @tacrewgirl explained that perfectly in the comment above! Basically it gets rid of unwanted annual fees (for certain cards) and keeps that same account open for the Age of Credit factor of your credit score. So a win-win in the credit card game!

It ended up being perfect timing with that bonus I got since I'm was just in Europe and the card has no foreign transaction fees as well. So that's an interesting question because it's exactly the thing that I'm looking at right now in my situation. I'll report back what I find when I apply for another Chase cards because the authorized user card could technically count towards 5/24, but there's been data points where people can call Chase in the application process and ask them to remove that from the 5/24 count because it's only an authorized user and not a new primary account

I hope that Chase opens a Sapphire lounge in my home airport, but if they do come to my area, I’m sure they’ll pick the airport I don’t use 🤦🏾‍♂️. Great video Daniel! I've had the CSR for over 4 years and have 180k pts. I just got the Chase Ink Preferred and want to transfer my 180k CSR pts to the Ink Preferred and then close the CSR so I can apply and get the bonus on the CSP, Will I be able to keep the CSR points if I do this?

So to clarify, what I actually meant in this video is I'm going to downgrade my CSP to a Freedom Flex - and then I'll reapply for a new CSR card, so not technically an upgrade with the same account. And because it's been more than 48 months since my last Sapphire card bonus, I'll be eligible to get another sign up bonus when I go to open that new CSR if that makes sense

What do you recommend after Chase Freedom, Chase Sapphire Pref, and Amex Blue Cash Preferred? Looking for my 4th card. CSP covers my 3x dining, Freedom covers catch all and Amex BCP covers my 6% grocery.

I’m in a similar situation (home airport is PHX) and originally was gonna upgrade to the Reserve for lounge access, but I think I’m gonna upgrade the Marriott Boundless to the Ritz and keep the preferred. Then I get access and I feel like I can justify the Ritz benefits more than the reserve for basically the same AF

I would say that at this point I am not going to cancel and open a new Schwab Platinum card. Now they changed the language on eligibility for welcome bonuses so it appears that having the current vanilla platinum would no longer allow me to get the bonus on the Schwab Platinum. So there's not much incentive to close down my current account and open another one for no bonus. The 1.1 CPP cash out rate would be nice, but now at this time I don't see myself wanting to cash out my Amex Points either because I'm using for travel and always getting above 1.1 CPP anyway. So unless something changes, I'm going to stick with my current Platinum for now - would always be open to product changing to the Schwab Platinum if that ever becomes and option

Daniel, have you considered the Wyndham business credit card for gas? It gives 8% on Wyndham redemptions, Wyndham diamond and Caesars gold (which gives a free Bahamas stay). I pair it with my venture x, which leads to incredible Wyndham resort redemptions in the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico!

I tried to play the game but ended up cancelling my cards over a year ago and have used my debit card exclusively ever since. All the bs you hear about increased fraud protection + airline miles is immaterial when you have a load of cash in the bank. I thought we were limited to 1 copy of CFF now. So if you own it already, you wouldn’t be able to downgrade your CSP to a 2nd copy of the Flex, no?

For now you can actually have more than 1 freedom flex card! So I would basically be downgrading the CSP to the CFF to then have more than 1 CFF 👍

2-3 years should be ok but depends on overall credit profile! I would check out their preapproval tool by doing a quick Google Search for that and if you are preapproved for the Venture or Venture X then there a good chance of approval when you apply!

Luckily being a nerd about this stuff myself I've had no problems managing these cards. I moved my payment due dates on a lot of them to be on the same day so it's easier to manage. But I also use the app CardPointers which really helps as well for organization so I would check that out in the description to this video!

What’s the point of having multiple different cards gathering different points? Like if I use the citi for gas only without a trifecta those points are kinda useless no unless I get cash back but you get much more value by using transfer partners? Wouldn’t I get more value by using Amex or a chase trifecta? Either getting the flex categorie or the 1.5 back minimum

Mainly just about maximizing in every category you can. And you have to decide if say for example 5x straight cash back is better on citi custom cash, or 1.5x points back on chase unlimited and then turning that into transfer partners.

So it all depends on my long term plan here - I like earning multiple different points currencies because it gives me options (not all points transfer to all hotels/airlines, plus transfer bonuses differ across points currencies every month which I try to take advantage of). Earning 5x on the Custom Cash could be cashed out for 5% cash back right now if I wanted to - but my long term plan is to at some point grab the Citi Premier card to get access to transfer partners with Citi where I could turn that 5X into 10%-15% back or more by transferring points earned from my Custom Cash. But even if something changes, 5% back in cash back is still very solid compared to 1.5%-2% cash back on gas that any of my other cards get. Hopefully that makes sense! Thanks for watching 👍

I guess I hold the title of the most weird case from Chase, I applied for the ink business and I was DENIED (excellent credit, great income) bcuz the silly 5/24 rule…..I called the recon department and I ask why, they told me flat out bcuz the 5/24 rule on which I clarified to them “it’s a business card that I applied for, the 5/24 don’t apply in this case” and for my surprise the answer received was “it don’t matter, the rule still apply, you may apply again when your status change to 4/24” 😯 I really deserve a stand up ovation for holding the weirdest Chase case title “ 😳

The recon rep was correct. APPLYING for Chase business cards is still subject to 5/24, but having the business card itself doesn't ADD to 5/24 count. It's an important distinction that people get wrong all the time.
