I've been waiting for this video ever since last spawncast when I saw you picked it up. I know it's a tech teardown but you should have talked about its biggest strength being the software. Otherwise, thanks for the great videos as always! In the software you can fix stick drift by adjusting deadzones in the software, have different response curves for the analog triggers and sticks, and map any button to a different one. The remapping and form factor is what sold me as scuf won't remap the dpad and evil/cinch are just a modded dualshock 4 which I don't find that comfortable. You people probably lower the in game deadzone setting to 0 and then complain about it drifting.

I see a lot of complaints about the price of the controller for various reasons, but there are a couple of factors that justify the price: Build Quality Two programmable back buttons Modular (so when additional parts are sold can be changed to what you like) To add to modularity, can be set up to physically play like an xbox controller for those who have both systems All buttons and functions can be mapped to do something else (as per the software) *Something most people overlook* And for the more technically inclined, better actuation rates. You could buy a $40 3rd party controller and play just fine. You can play with the stock controller that comes with the system and play just fine as well and pair it to a PC over bluetooth to boot. There will be people that would like to invest in a premium controller and like the options they offer. Astro put together a nice piece of equipment and I can both see and make use of the value in the C40. It is simply another option among all of the options for playing on PS4 and PC so no one (including Astro) should be put down because others cannot see the value in the product.

i know it's been discontinued- or so i've heard- but i got an Astro C40 for christmas of 2021 refurbished, and it's seen a lot of use since. went looking for a teardown vid because the R1 button had deadzones (i don't even know how) from too much melee in Warframe, and the X button lost it's springiness (the gel pad under the face buttons wore out and cookie-cut a little disc out of it), and this video definitely gave me the precursory glance i needed to know how to take it all apart proper. i don't think i fixed anything, and the X button is now sunken into the faceplate, but it was still a good way to clarify which parts i could force without breaking to open it all up. i was hoping the thing would last a little longer before i'd need to tune it up, since the thing actually fits my gorilla mitts really well, but i guess not having a life really puts the durability of controllers to the test. at least it wasn't stick drift this time (cough cough dualshock 4 cough cough)

The ability to lock the triggers in place is great, but unfortunately, because the locks are completely mechanical, the controller isn't smart enough to then adjust how they work. You pretty much have to set up a profile on the controller which adjusts the sensitivity so that the triggers hit 100% with the locks in place. Otherwise, they only do 40 - 60%, and for many games, that means that it's like they weren't pressed. Given the price, it would have been really nice if they'd handled that automatically as part of locking the triggers in place. It's still a great controller in spite of that (and personally, I don't play any games where you wouldn't want the triggers locked), but it _is_ something that they arguably should have done better. All in all, this is a great controller, but I expect that the price will turn most people off (especially with how many people already complain about the cost of the Switch Pro Controller, which is about 1/3 the price).

Why is it most the "pro" controllers with cool features and gimmicks are always pretty damn expensive? The cheap "pro" controller I found so far is GameSir T4 and several PowerA controllers.
@kalessin49425 жыл бұрын
Likely because the cooler features make them more expensive to manufacture, and not enough people buy them to bring the price down much. So, they're sold at a premium, and the companies make a decent profit on each one sold instead of having to figure out how to sell a ton of them. And to some extent, someone willing to pay $150 for a premium controller is going to be just as willing to pay $200 if they think that it's good, whereas the average consumer is unhappy when a controller costs $60. Obviously, not everyone who is willing to pay more than $60 to get fancier features is willing to pay $150 or $200, but there would have to be a fairly large number of people willing to pay extra but not premium prices in order for it to make sense for companies to make products targeting that range, and it seems to be far more typical for companies making something that expensive to just go full premium so that they can maximize their profit per unit sold.

C'mon dude.. , it's a great detailed vid 'cept I was hoping for some guidance about taking it apart. But sadly you cut out the section of video where you remove the rubber hand grips. For me that seems like the least straight forward part of tearing down the controller, as there seems to be a part glued on and the multiple clips holding it in place as well. So it would have been great if you left in some of your struggle to give us all a better idea of what and where to use the spudger on. Wouldn't wanna be seperating the glued part as that would make it annoying to rebuild. Anyways great informative video if you just want to see what's inside the Astro C40 TR.. But not so helpful if you plan on doing the same teardown and some self service yourself. But I may come back and watch another time once I get that grip off XD

So I have one and my square button is starting to stick. You didn't really show the face button removal so did they have a little spring inside that i could maybe replace to bring it back??

Thank you... I've been waiting to see someone take one of these apart... Too afraid to take mine apart LOL

My rb button stopped working, wish they would’ve made it easy to replace all the triggers and components and not just the sticks

It would be cool if you could get your hands on the Scuf Vantage and tear that down. Regardless, thanks for another good video!

Controller has some cheap button mesh. My cross button broke/ripped (the rubber bit inside) twice. Analog breaks easy but you can get an off brand better one. Customer support would rath you break and so they send you another brand new instead of fixing it themselves, all mine needed was a new rubber bit but whatever, spare parts for later

How heavy is it with the rumbles out, I prefer to disable them anyway and are the face buttons interchangeable with the PS4 buttons ?

Is that nice 'soft' coating on the outside surfaces going to act like the same coating used during the 90's to get a 'premium' feel? Will it soon become a nasty, sticky mess? It'd be a shame if it does, even though 'we' probably won't be using it in 10 - 20 years... but future retro gaming collectors might have a problem with it!! :D

Mine just broke. The left trigger underneath is stuck and will not move. Needs to be taken apart but I'm going to contact Astro first. Up until that I was happy with it.

When plugged into PC does touchpad move mouse? 🐁 Would like to see PC software as well. Maybe in another video.
@kalessin49425 жыл бұрын
It gets treated as an Xbox 360 controller on the PC, so the touchpad doesn't work on the PC. And all of the remapping is just between buttons, not allowing for stuff like remapping buttons to keyboard keys (though that can be done via Steam). It very much comes across as a premium console controller that also happens to work on PC rather than being designed with PCs in mind.

@@kalessin4942 I like the triggers being low like the Xbox elite controller. For bf5

I mean yeah it cost alot but it's insides are better made than a standard dualshock that ends up having analog issues after a couple of months and is a pain in the ass to clean

I noticed the rumble motors seem to have different weights on them, but you didn't mention it - is that normal?
@-Steven-5 жыл бұрын
Yes, one is for heavy rumble the kinda of rumble you'd get driving over logs, boulders etc the other is for fine rumble like driving on say grass or the side of the road.
