I bought an RTIC cup, and it works very well in my car. Ice cold drinks all day long. The lid hasn't melted yet, maybe it hasn't got to 325 in my car yet. If your car gets to 325 inside, better get the Yeti.

Suggestions for others to try: put cups in 100 degree oven instead of 325. The artic cup may be as good (or better) than the Yeti if you tend to use your cup in climates below the melting point of plastic, as 100% of the human population does. Tbe sound of air when the seal was cut was air rushing IN, not out. There's a vacuum in between the 2 layers to prevent thermal conductivity. Since the bottom is in direct contact with a solid, it conducts the most heat. That's why the gap is larger there. Great job fellas!

I have the Rtic, my brother has another knockoff called Artic and a friend of mine has a Yeti. The Yetis is $40, the knockoffs are $18-$20. They're all vacuum-wall insulated cups made out of the same grade of stainless steel. It's not like vacuum insulation is a technology Yeti invented. Real-world our three cups have functioned identically. Next to my brother's swimming pool in full sunlight the ice lasted the same amount of time. Indoors, ice will last in my Rtic for about 18 hours. So, the only real difference seems to be that the Rtic plastic lid melts at a lower temperature than the Yeti. Since I don't keep my Rtic in a 325-degree oven, I'm not sure the plastic lid is worth an additional $20.

No, no gas came out of it. Gas (air) went into it. The vacuum normally contained between those layers you found halts two of the three ways in which heat can be transferred, namely conduction and convection. This leaves only radiation, the least efficient of the three to move heat into or out of the cup. This is why it keeps stuff the same temperature.

Not even 200 degrees. The temp inside your car is roughly 30 degrees hotter than the outside air temperature after about an hour of sitting in direct sunlight. So if its 100 degrees outside the hottest your car will be is around 130 - 140. Its possible to reach temperatures of around 170 inside a car that has been sitting all day in direct sunlight if its over 100 degrees outside but it is not the norm.

Love to see a Dad and son together, rehearsed or not. Nice young man. However, in the real world is the stuff stays so cool because the area between the layers inside the container is a VACUUM. You need molecules of some sort (air) to transfer heat. Perhaps Dad should be teaching his son science instead of destruction. Nice vid though.

The Ozark Trail 30 oz is < $10 and the 20 oz is < $8. I have both, and as far as I can tell after a month of daily use they work every bit as well as the Yetis and Rtics in real world situations. There are other Yeti/Ozark comparison videos out there where people pack them with ice, then after 24 hours they pour out the melted water and it's the same amount in both. Even if the Yetis ~are~ technically a bit better, they're certainly not ~that~ much ($20 - $30 more expensive) better. :)

It also doesn't make sense why the cup with the lowest temperature would win afterwards. If the temperature is higher, that is an indication of better insulation. Not the lowest, which indicates that heat distributed faster into the enviroment.

My cooler keeps all my water cold for the whole work day but it clearly does not maintain the exact same temp as the start of the day (not even taking into account that I open and close it often and of course have less water bottles in it at the end of the day). If I left everything in there all day, the cooler and ice pack would be warmer but still cold-ish when it's time to go home.

You're melting the lid of the artic at unearthly temps and calling it a fail. When parked in 100 degrees, a car's interior gets up to about 140... speeding up your test in 325 is not a good test.

+Tiffany Snodgrass I don't know about your particular case, but I can say that you need to avoid getting bleach on stainless steel. It will pit the metal and cause it to rust. I learned that the hard way on an expensive piece of restaurant equipment. Some people put a small amount of bleach in the rinse water to sanitize the dishes before drying them and I would assume that could cause problems with these cups.

Oh come on...you can’t be serious. Read their website before you buy. They only say it will keep the liquid twice as cold as plastic. My bets are this guy didn’t preheat the oven..it takes st least 15 minutes for most ovens to come to temp and he said he did 20. min though I’d have to go back to check - did we hear a beeper go off, did we see it count down? He was so busy dealing with melting plastic..not sure he really did a full 325F for a full 20 minutes. Most guys don’t realize you have to preheat an oven when directions say to bake at certain temp for a certain period of time.

Candi Soda If they are cutting costs on their lid what else are they cutting costs on? Quality Control? Customer support? Are they outsourcing jobs to places with poor labor conditions? Other materials? Not to mention, what exactly is point at which the lid starts to deform. If i put in a boiling hot liquid will it be fine? What if I do that every day, does it deform a little bit each time? Point is, I'd rather spend a bit more on a more durable product that is built well than a knock off that can accomplish the same task but is less durable/more prone to issues. Also, the story is the other way around. Country A spends a million dollars on a pen that works in space while country b just uses a pencil.

Logically speaking, the more you exaggerate the test the better and more useful the results are. By putting the cups in the oven at 325, which is an environment the cups will never naturally experience, you can get a better sense of how good the cup can be. Worst case scenario, you are driving through a desert such as the Gobi, or Lut, or Sonoran, or Sahara, and temperatures are breaking 120.

+Sam Valentine if that were true, your skin would quickly blister in a car after a long hit day. If a car would get 'way hotter' then 325 very few plastic could be used in a car. On average temp increases about 30% in a car so at 120 degrees it would only rise to about 160. I have both a yeti and an Rtic, have left them both in me car this summer while I work (forgot to take them in) several time. The Rtic does better at half the price. Don't believe me, check it on KZbin. Several people have done controlled experiments with the cups and the coolers.

oldschoolgamerOo Thats what I was referring to...obviously a car is not going to get up to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. I was saying it would get way hotter than 120 degrees, the outside temperature.

I think you and your son had a great idea. I think where things went off the rails was the oven segment. None of the cups were designed to withstand those oven temps and it is not how they are used. Maybe put them in a hot car next time? Possibly y'all thought a comparison of the cups at room temp was not interesting enough, but I learned from it. I learned you don't need to buy the ridiculously priced Yeti products. So..thank you and your son for the excellent comparison and don't be discouraged by those who are being unkind. John

Yeti cups are vacuum insulated; therefore, the gas you were hearing was ambient atmospheric pressure (the air you are breathing) being pushed inside the vacuum void--NOT gas escaping; it's high pressure propagating to lower pressure. High pressure ALWAYS propagates to lower pressure, e.g. Atoms with "excited" energy levels want to return back to their "stable" lower energy level {I think it's an ideal gas law and quite possibly a law of thermodynamics as well}.

+tyvek05 You have no idea what you're talking about. While there are sunglasses that offer the same protection as safety glasses, sunglasses absolutely do not offer the same protection as regular sunglasses. The angles at which safety glasses stop debris from hitting your eyes along with the shatter resistance of the plastic are the main things that differentiate safety glasses from other glasses. Some sunglasses have glass lenses, and those are obviously the worst. You must either be slow or just baiting this guy. But I encourage you to wear sunglasses while doing an activity that requires safety glasses.

It's called an annular space. It is the method used to hold all cryogenic fluids like liquid oxygen and argon. The annular space has a vacuum pulled and it's sealed (sometimes additional insulation is placed in the annular space like perlite. ) Many thermos jugs have a similar concept but not as high quality materials as the Yeti.....thus making the vacuum inefficient and causing heat leak. The reason there is a large space on the bottom is the bottom is generally in contact with a warm (or cold) surface enhancing heat leak. So they make that annular space larger. The hiss....was the vacuum breaking and air pressure returning to the space. This is technology that has been around since the 1940's. Cryogenic storage in minniature

Pretty bogus test IMO. I have both 30oz cups and they perform identically in real "ïn the truck" daily heat. Typical old vacuum bottle [also called Dewar flask] construction that has been around over 100 years. The 18-8 stainless construction is the same and so it would stand to reason a bit of savings might be gleaned from a slightly different lid plastic. Does anyone have one of the green metal Stanley thermoses on the shelf someplace? Same thing only its not a cup. I have a large 2 quart one [about $45 now] my dad used for many years for hot coffee at work. It will easily keep it hot enough to scald you well into the next day in freezing weather. Yetti is no more than a cliche remarketing of an old very successful technology.

Yeah, I have a stanley green thermos. I once filled it with coffee and accidentally left it at home on an out of town trip. I left early Monday morning, came back Tuesday night (34-36hrs) and the coffee was still too hot to touch. Granted it was left in the house and not outside in the winter, it's still impressive. I use a 16oz "thermos" brand vacuum mug nearly every day for the past several years and it's still great, I can fill it up in the morning and it's still hot 4 hours later.
