Just found your YT channel this evening. WOW! is right! This Mexican Crazy Lace Agate is SO Different from the M C L A of the 1960's/1970's where as I recall, there was a whitish pattern (upper 2/3's of slice) above the colors of the pattern below. Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to more stone cuttings & adventures with you!

I got an idea for a craft after looking at those beautiful agates! What do you think about trying to make a picture with the agates that look like a map from the sky? Maybe like a mosaic? Each one makes me think of unusual landscapes. Let me know if you will try it. I wish I had some to try it myself. Keep up the awesome finds.

I think you need to make further cuts on Both sections of the Montana Moss Agates and I'll tell you why. Many years ago, early 1960's, when I really knew nothing about stones & had never seen a lapidary saw or any equipment for grinding-polishing stones, in a new job I began in a private psychiatric hospital in CT to teach patients all phases of Metalcraft: enameling on copper, jewelery using sterling silver, lapidary (my classroom was equipped with an all-in one Covington Co., horizontal lapidary unit: saw, two 8" grinding wheels, 3"wide cast aluminum (?) drum w/slot for strips of 600 grit wet/dry sand paper & on the end of the unit a 8" spin disk with a firm sponge rubber base on which to glue 8" leather discs for various polishing compounds which were powder to be mixed with water. As I said earlier in my comment, I was unfamiliar with all of this. Four years prior to this, I was a junior in high school, took a crafts class which introduced me to jewelry making using cabachons, but no equipment for doing so. Continued this my senior year; went to a junior college where I took craft & jewelry classes, no lapidary equipment here either, So my introduction to lapidary was in my new job in late summer 1960. My co-worker was able to show me a little about using the saw & lapidary unit. ( A few months later he transferred to the Art Dept., so I was on my own until someone would be hired to replce him.) Then it was learn by doing. A few months later when I was exploring drawers that had slabs and rough rocks, some had exposed sides to show what was beneath the surface. I picked one up that was a Montana moss agate with what I thought were "pieces of moss" scattered in various locations on this clearish surface about 3.5" long x 1.75" thick x 2" wide, as I recall. I was intrigued. What was hiding in the areas I couldn't see? I debated how I should cut this piece. Finally I cut across the width & was wowed by what I saw! A mountianous scene beyond a valley from a plateau with two small bushes on both sides of plateau. This was Not imagination! It was/is like a painting! I cut it to a rectangular shape, cut off the corners rounding them, ground-polished it on both front & back and set into a simple bezel setting with a 3-piece pin -back, so nothing is across the back of the setting. I'm so proud of the piece because it was only the 2nd stone I'd cut-polished! I've never seen another scenic Montana moss agate, ever!

I found a fist size agate like rock in rural Iowa recently in a stream bed. When I picked it up I thought it was smoky quartz, but when I washed it off it had some red and chartreuse. When I slabbed it there were no layers, but there were translucent blooms and flames of clear, red, chartreuse, gray and white. It cut and polished like quartz, but the fine details are fractal. I can only think it tumbled south from Lake Superior with a glacier.
@gregderksen19962 жыл бұрын
Well, that was awesome. Not gonna lie. That dryhead was definitely my favourite followed closely by that brecciated jasper. Never a bad day when you and Kim get together for a day of slabbing. Can’t wait to see what you create with these on your second channel! Good luck on the bear canyon hunt Theo!
@jamesblondeau10292 жыл бұрын
Wow with the crazy lace. Stunning. The microscope pic were amazing. The iris agate. But i have an odd question with all the bands in the Brazilian agate is it possible there could be an iris/Brazilian agate? And loved the geode that was cut off centre and the jasper is breathtaking thanks for doing the video and sparking my rock loving mind. 😀
@tashacano33242 жыл бұрын
That weird Montana agate would have looked totally different if you had cut it on another angle. It's just cut cross grain if you will & totally changed how the dendrites look. I think the agate was my favorite 🤣😂
