Xavier and Marjorie, this was a wonderful, informative interview. Marjorie speaks like an educated 🇯🇲 Jamaican who represents herself and 🇦🇬 Antigua well. One of the deacon, at my Catholic parish, is from Antigua. They are a very refined people and Marjorie fits right in. I didn't know it was so expensive to live there. When I lived in Kingston, doors were left unlocked, and my mother would ask the neighbors to " give an eye" on her seven children until she returned from town. Good substantive interview!!

Great interview, true about the accents. When I lived in London I had friends from Antigua, and they are probably the closest to Jamaica in terms of accent, and there are many other similarities, however, on a cultural level, while the accent is different I think Trinidadians are our closest cousins, just in terms of their vibe, their mixing and blending, food, and the way they handle themselves.

Marjorie said that in Antigua, it is known as kidney mango and others that are grafted. I think there was more documentation of foods in 🇯🇲 Jamaica. As a child in Kingston, we had school trips to the Agricultural Dept at Hope Gardens. We learnt the names of foods and,if not native to the island) when/where from a varietal came into Jamaica. Hence Bombay, Christmas names etc for mangoes. There was a great Agricultural Store at Church St near East Parade where people could buy seeds for planting. I hope that the Elementary Schools in Kingston & St. Andrew are taking the children on trips to Hope and the Institute of Jamaica. While I like St. Julie and aforementioned mangoes, I rate the lowly black mango (blackie) with the thin skin that is so sweet that you can also eat.

Antiguans also say unuh. A lot. There are levels of dialect though. You're not going to hear unuh in formal settings. When people really throw down there isn't a difference with stuff like that. Differences for me are some of the French touches that come from the proximity to places like Dominica and the immigrant populations from there. So people make a Wr sound at the beginning of words like "register" and "relative." Also, no one in Antigua will say "hoven" for "oven" or "your honour" with a hard H. No one would pick out Marjorie as not being Antiguan.

@theeliteclass111 ай бұрын
Just because Antigua doesn't have a motto "Out of one is many", it doesn't mean that 91% of them are African. Antiguans like other islands would be of African and other ethnic mixtures. In Jamaica over 90% of the population is African decent too.

Boss size has nothing to do with it. Look at Haiti which is much big than Jamaica but suffer so much from poverty and lack due to external forces keeping Haiti down because it is a black country and historical reasons. So any country in the Caribbean can have the same faith as Haiti including Jamaica if these racist forces want to.create fail state and I believe this would happen in the future.
