Today I interviewed Asian foreigners in Japan. Because mostly I interviewed western people even though the majority of foreigners in Japan is Asians. And I’m planning to interview Japanese “what do you think of other countries” Like asking what’s the image of the Philippines or which Asian country do you want to visit like that !! Funny enough so many KZbinrs try to present the “foreigner life in Japan” topic, I personally have never really seen anyone who focuses on the Asian group, which quite frankly can face different/new issues compared to non Asian foreigners in Japan.

I think it just so happened that majority of those he talked to were Filipinos because he was looking for Asian foreigners. I'm Asian American and studied abroad in Japan for a year. I pretty much blended in in terms of looks. People didn't really suspect me of being a foreigner until I speak English or Cantonese or the little Korean I knew with my friends, or sometimes by the way I dressed (it was so humid there, I'd go to class in shorts and a tank top at times which isn't a thing there). I spoke English with my American counterpart on an elevator once, and this middle-aged salaryman was like, "Wow...your English is amazing." haha I have to agree with the two women from the Philippines about having difficulty expressing oneself amongst Japanese people. I feel like they're very conservative and even if they disagree with something, they may not voice that; however, they may agree with someone who does (I see it happen in some of these online interviews of Japanese people as well). I'm...different. Being American, I'm not really afraid to express my opinions, especially when something is wrong; on the other hand, I understood where they're coming from since my parents came from Asia, so our household culture is still very traditional. I was often told that my 正義感が強い, or that my sense of justice is strong, because I'd often stick up for my fellow Asian dorm mates, who might let people walk over them because they're afraid of stirring up trouble. Despite being a female, I'm also rough around the edges, so I do tend to intimidate people (not intentionally). I took a Korean class one semester. The teacher also taught Japanese at the Japanese Institute, so he recognized me and my Taiwanese dormmate. He asked us if it was weird, coming to Japan to study Japanese and yet taking a Korean class taught in Japanese. He made us introduce ourselves in front of our Japanese classmates. Let's just say....no one really wanted to sit near us or partner up with us when we practiced Korean even though we spoke Japanese at an advanced level.

The two women are from Cebu Philippines and the guy is from Davao Philippines. By default, they can speak 3 languages, if they learn Japanese then that would be their fourth. It's a bit of a bummer to not pick up Japanese language after living there for like 2-3 years, I just don't understand why they said they know zero Japanese. I mean, for people who listen to J-pop, have watched anime, J-dramas or TV shows, they usually pick up some Japanese vocabulary just from that. Although not fluent, they know a bit of the language so how much more if you live in that country where almost everything is in Japanese and there's rarely any english content. Do they really not know any basic conversational Japanese? I don't understand why they said zero. I think that's also one reason why they say they can't express themselves, not only because of the difference in culture and demeanor but the language barrier itself holds them back from doing so. Props to the Davao guy for actually going out his way to learn the language even if it's just the basic.

fellow filipino here, as you get older, it gets difficult to learn a language compared to when you were younger learning about 3+ languages because your brain development is different. I can speak 3 languages: English, Tagalog and Ibanag. Currently trying to learn latin and it's difficult, it's not easy compared to when I was younger (around 4 thanks to TV) trying to learn english

I know a lot of pinoy and other foreigners here in Japan who always said zero japanese or zero english even though Japanese people always say zero english even though they know certain words such us hello, hi, good morning, bye. I know saying zero is an inappropriate word to tell their opinion maybe what they meant is they don't know how to use Japanese grammar into a sentence or English grammar. Plus they don't have confidence in speaking the language. Learning in Anime is hard not all conversation in anime is being used in real life In Japan they have slang and dialect too. I studied nihonggo in the Philippines for a short timw and when I came in Tokyo I don't understand a thing because they use different accents there are youngsters slang and old people's slangs and they also have honorifics so it's hard plus for those who are at their late ages who want to study Japanese will be hard. The two girl must've been new to Japan and they seems like english teachers and it's kinda reasonable since some Japanese teachers will try to talk to them in English . Some of my foreign teachers here in Tokyo must only speak English so that the students will be pressured to learn the language. I do hope they study more Nihonggo because it's a way of a respect also and much more convinient. Plus it's not easy to study Japanese!! but learning it will be rewarding

I am from the Philippines. The 2 girls from the Phils have stayed there for 2 to 3 years. Yet they said they have ZERO japanese language. If you are interested and really want to learn how to speak Japanese, then by that 2 to 3 yrs, you already knew at least how to speak Japanese even for at least some simple words or greetings. They said they find it hard to express themselves with some japanese colleagues. That’s because they dont know how to speak or they are not eager to communicate thru the japanese language. My sister lives in Tokyo & they always had me stay with them for a vacation for 1 month at least every 2 yrs. I try to communicate and trying to understand the conversation of my sister & my japanese brother in law by listening to them. That way you learn. And whenever I go out and buy something I can speak at least some few nihonggo words. Japanese language is very nice to hear and rather much easy to learn compared to the chinese language.

You are interviewing Asian people that still look pretty foreign from the Japanese people standard. That's why the experience is not that much different from westerners. For me, I look Japanese, so most people think I'm Japanese until they talk to me long enough to notice some accent. Because of that I can feel the differences in the ways they treat me before and after their realization.

It was so nice that the Philippine community in Japan was big enough to recognize.. 😅 i have a family too in Saitama and Yokohama. so I must say that being an Asian Foreigner in Japan isn't really being a foreigner to me.. I'm glad you interviewed Filipinos, for me being asian live in japan is not so difficult it depends on how to deal to people either what is your nationality, I'm a Filipino and I work as a trainee last 2018 for 1 year and after that I decided to take exams just to work again in japan,In 2019 luckily I passed the exams and I have my employer, In 2020 I'm about to go back in japan but unfortunately covid started, and up to this moment I'm one of the 400k people who's patiently waiting to enter japan. I've heard march 1 is open , I'm really excited and really happy, hopefully I can come back to japan soon.

When I studied abroad one of my friends who studied with me was Asian American. She was dating another American who was white. Her Japanese wasn't very good, but her boyfriend's Japanese was much better. Whenever they would go out the locals would always speak Japanese to her, and would be shocked when he'd be the one to start speaking back and translating for her. Edit: this was actually pretty common with many of my foreign Asian friends. The locals would assume they spoke Japanese since they were Asian and were always shocked when a non-asian did. There were some occasions when myself or another non-asian would speak Japanese and the local wouldn't even be listening because they assumed we were speaking English

east asians look alike coz they all came from Chinese descent it will be really hard to tell on the spot. you can easily tell indians because of their skins and filipinos because of huge eyes. maybe he should make an arranged meeting and have his interviewees meet up so that he can have variety of answers from different nationals.

I’m still always baffled by people who live in a different country for years, plan to stay there even longer and still don’t put the time to learn the language of that country. Especially if they work as language teachers, they should know how important communication is. Actually, the least their company should do is provide language classes for them. If they were given that opportunity and did not avail of it, that’s really sad indeed. It’s a lost chance to learn a language and its culture.

it easier to learn a language if you learn it as a kid or teenager, but as an adult traveling to another country, you can spend more than a decade depending on some people, their age, and learning capability. Most of all, you need to consider some of these Asian, they have their native language, then they learn English, then they also need to learn Japanese. To speak fluently in 3 languages is a hard task for most adult.

@@PalitoSelvatico The thing is, they’ve been living there for two/three years and plan to live there longer. It’s not a month-long stint. But I understand where you’re coming from. Still it must be hard. I’ve been to visit Japan and most people don’t speak or don’t want to speak English at all so I can imagine how difficult it must be to do even just day to day things. And honestly, going back to your question, I would learn Italian. It’s a beautiful language and it will help me get around easier.

I’m a little shocked about the 2 filipina girls don’t know not even one word of Japanese language after living there for 2 to 3 years. Maybe they do but are shy to speak it out. I live in America but I know few words such as: Ogenki desu ka? Konnichiwa, Konbanwa, Ohio, Arigato, Sugoi, Nan ji desu ka? Akiramenaide and so on. I learned these words when I was a kid because my dad worked at a company owned byJapanese and also my dad gave me a book called Learning Nippongo! 😍😍😍

There are definitely a lot of differences between East Asian foreigners, South/South East Asian foreigners, and Western foreigners in Japan. I'm Chinese descent, born in Singapore. I lived in Japan for a year. People often assume I can speak Japanese while I was there and I had to get used to the looks of disappointment when I told them I can't really speak Japanese well. Meanwhile, I don't get the same looks/discrimination when people don't speak to me because I look Japanese. Dating wise, it was much more difficult for me as I looked Japanese but couldn't speak Japanese, so I didn't have the "western looks" while having that struggle with communication.

Desi foreigners are treated differently from SE Asians. Desis have no hope of blending in ever whereas a filipino or vietnamese can often blend in a decent bit as they resemble japanese people a lot more except just a bit more tanned

Thank you for making this video. I'm Korean-American. I taught English at a university in Japan. My experiences were a little different from my white friends. First, I could blend in easily. Everyone thought I was Japanese until I spoke. My students were intrigued that I'm Asian but from America. My students were very nice but my boss was not. My boss told my coworkers and I that he hates Korea and America. I noticed I was treated very differently when I was with a Chinese friend who cannot pass for Japanese. Some people were very rude to us. I couldn't believe the difference in customer service but I did hear stories about this. When I was with my white friends, sometimes Japanese people complained to me because they thought I was Japanese. They complained that my friends were too loud. Overall, I was treated much better when I was with white friends than Asian (non-Japanese) friends. People were more willing to help and more polite. Overall, my experience in Japan was very positive (except for my boss). To be honest, I think some Japanese people were less intimidated speaking in English with me because I look Japanese.

Hahahah I had the similar experience when I used to live in South Korea for English teaching about one year and half. I am Japanese, but moved to the US when I was a kid and raised there and have lived in Japan and Canada as well. I didn’t know any Korean when I was in South Korea except some basic words. People assumed that I am Korean and would speak Korean, so a lot of Koreans were cold and rude to me by not being able to speak the language well. Sometimes they would just keep speaking Korean to me even though I said I don’t understand Korean at all.. it was hard for me to make friends there except foreign friends from the US, Canada and other countries since Koreans alienated me with my differences and there’s nothing in common. So whenever I hung out with my western friends and other foreign friends (white, black and Indian), it was all eyes on me for seconds and they think I am showing off or something. Also when I hung out with some Korean friends I knew, people often complained because I was a little louder than them when we were talking. And they are still furious about the Japan colonization and teachers present Japan negatively and indoctrinate students in history class at school which is pretty sad and not cool at all. I met a few nice Koreans though and they lived in the US and England and were somewhat westernized. My boss didn’t like me because he hates Japan and some coworkers did not like me and backbite about me as well. Koreans were less intimidated speaking in English because I look Korean although I am not Korean lol

Stereotypes and racism still exist. If your darker than their color, they'll be distant to you. Atleast we Filipinos are very forgiving about Japan in WW2. Yes that's sad indeed. Textbook and history classes don't wanna teach their own citizen, the dark side of their country's colonization. It's very famous as "White washing". But it exist in every country even in the Philippines and Japan. Japanese was perceived as cruel, violent, rapist and strict in our history books. They made our ancestor slaves and worked them to death. Are you aware of this Japanese people? Or they're just teaching how great japan was during ww2 era.

My japanese students never asked me when i planned to go home to my home country even though I'm American. But when i asked my western looking coworkers they said that they got asked all the time. Asian foreigners can blend in easily until they open their mouths lol 😆 i only get stared at when im with my western looking friends and it freaks me out...

I have never been to Japan before but absolutely would love to (or even stay in there forever) and I think the biggest culture shock even for another Asian would be: - how strict Japan is - the unspoken rules, like in public places - the working-too-much thing about the last thing I mentioned, I came from a country that is sooo lazy and way too laid-back. coming to Japan or even work there would be something so shocking.

I can relate to what the Filipinos from Cebu have experienced. Many Japanese people are so polite and reserve, its like you have to be always that way too, especially in work places. Being reserved and polite is okay but too much is too much. Its really different here in the Philippines. Its more fun here and people are more carefree. I love Japan but I don't think I can adapt in their culture so well.

According to 8 years of experience living here, I think that sometimes Japanese people who are strangers to you treat westerners kinda like superior than other Asians plus black foreigners. Like they get intimidated by the Westerners. I feel that they kinda prefer western foreigners more! But in the end it all matters your personality to be liked or disliked by people. Edit: Well I live in western part where there are not many foreigners so my experiences could be different from people living in Tokyo or Osaka.

Just being white in Japan and not trying to understand their culture or language will not get you anywhere you will be lonely there and no one will even bat an eye on you. Don't expect people there to give you special treatment just because you are 'white'. If you are a normal white person with nothing particularly extraordinary about you then you won't be given any special treatment. You need to understand their culture and language then only they will even notice you just like other foreigners there

If you are an average white guy who is mediocre in everything then no you won't be given any special treatment.You have to understand their culture and language just like other foreigners .If you don't believe me there is a woman named 'Chiaki Watanabe ' in quora she herself said there is no white privilege in Japan. Also why do you even expect white people to be given special treatment there?

Part 2. To interview asian foreigner who speak Japanese fluently and have japanese style (clothes), I bet you got different answer. Even on these range, you can also make it at least into 3 categories based on countries. Most asian foreigner that blend well can really notice it.

perhaps some of them dont recognize the similarities between them and japanese people because its normal for them. theres a difference between an asian who grew up abroad in the west and an asian who is westernized. for asians in asia, the difference is mostly cultural. but things like taking your shoes off in the house, knowing how to use squat toilets, or being familiar with filial piety/multigenerational living are some examples of things westerners in the west may have a hard time adjusting to that asian foreigners are used to. i think the biggest struggle as a korean adoptee is that my face looks japanese, thus i am put to a higher standard on initial meeting than obvious foreigners of knowing the language and culture. the irony is that i have less in common with even these filipino people as japanese people because i grew up with white american parents who adopted me. east asian foreigners definitely get scrutinized more heavily for not speaking japanese well, or for doing "foreigner" things like speaking english. another thing that is good though is that if we (east asian foreigners mostly) are working on our japanese, people will be more willing to speak it with us and not try to work on their english. i feel like with a lot of white people, since they are obviously foreign, they are treated as such so whether that means they will get stopped on the street for an interview for japanese tv (happened to my friend lol) or be asked to take a picture like a celebrity or have random people try to help them and practice their english at the same time, its definitely one thing that asians in the west and asian foreigners in asia dont share with other foreigners.

I love that you made this video. I am Phillipino American and I'm starting to learn Japanese - I am hoping to visit Japan in a few years, but I am terrified of discrimination. I am very culturally separated from my Philippino background, as I was adopted from the Philippines when I was less than a year old. I have only lived in the US and there is a good amount of racism here. I am very shy, soft-spoken, polite, and I am culturally sensitive, with the willingness to try to learn Japanese - I hope this helps when I visit.

Filipinos have “Hiya” socio-cultural values and mentality, which allow us to assimilate really well into Japanese society! Yes we are westernized, but the elements of Confucianism and collectivism are still engrained from early cultural trade with China. Being East/south East Asian comes with a lot of similarities, and allows for a wonderful integration and combination of cultures across the far east hemisphere. It’s super interesting to see, and it very clearly mirrors why so much cultural trade has happened over millennia

Like as an Asian American, I am curious if I could come to Japan without perfect Japanese (working on learning it) if you could still get by and make friends? I saw some discussions online where people were kind of discriminated against when they came to live there because they looked more Japanese as East Asian descent, but didn't speak perfectly or know the customs perfectly and were looked down upon. Like the same grace Japanese people would give white people wasn't afforded to them. I really want to go but I am worried about being discriminated against because I'm Asian American

Being Asian American I felt that I would blend in when in Japan. It seems that Japanese aren't aware of Asians brought up in western countries, but I think its based on what they see in Hollywood considering how under represented we are. I always find myself in between being Asian and Western in Japan, it's often assumed that I'm half if I speak Japanese and I say I'm an American national. Though I'm sure Japanese are aware of Japanese Americans, I wonder why they don't consider that for other Asians brought up in the west.
