Of course the main island of Okinawa is beautiful, and people are relatively friendly and warm (at least compared to typical residents of cities in other areas of Japan) but the Okinawan (Yaeyama) islands further south are on another level altogether. I’ve been to Ishigaki Island a couple or times with my family, and it’s just amazing. It just feels…magic being there. Less developed. Less English spoken. And everyone drives under the speed limit. But once you experience that feeling once, it keeps a hold on you forever, and you always dream of going back. (No I’m not getting money from the Okinawa Tourism Promotion society or anything. Really! 😆)

Haha, you're a legend! I heard it said once (I played touch footie with islanders (Fiji, Samoa, Cook Islanders etc) that they can have "island mentality" which means: "There is a problem? Then just go to the beach... no problem!" 😀 I think it might have a hint of truth if such a life style is afforded where "nature meets you more than half-way"! Blessing to such people.

@@commentarytalk1446 yeah, I guess if we’re surrounded by amazing nature every day, it’s hard to worry too much about things. You just go outside, breath in the floral-scented; slightly salty air, and everything seems okay. (A closely-knit, warm community doesn’t hurt either I guess.)

Kyoto is a very touristic city. Because of the pandemic there have been fewer tourists over the last two years, especially foreign ones. I hear some people are happy about this, for it's more peaceful, while I guess others are not, if their business depends on visitors, for instance. You might ask people in Kyoto what they think about this matter. Do they think Japan should allow foreigners tourist to come and visit again? In general, I love rural Japan, so if you happen to visit more remote places, I'd love if you could interview people there. Anyway, thanks for the intersting content.

I grew up in the Caribbean so hearing the guy from Texas detail a nice path to visit Okinawa, from south to north, was interesting. I cannot wait to see the beaches. Gives me an idea of how to plan my trip when the times comes. It also makes sense that more people get the chance to learn English where there is the base and more foreigners compared to other parts where some Japanese people may not meet foreigners often in their daily interactions.

I remember the very first meal I had was at a Hawaiian-themed burger place, and had Hawaiian burger (with pineapple). OiiSHIII!! 😋 Thank you for uploading this Takashii! It would have been wonderful if you included some scenes of you walking around. Would have been nostalgic to see 🤩

I was told if you want to move to Hawaii, its good if you're an outgoing outdoor type of person. Not at home all the time. I'm sure the lifestyle of the average Okinawa citizen is similar even though its a place with Japanese people (who are obviously less sociable than americans on average)

Driving is the only cost effective way to get around Okinawa. Bus is expensive, and the monorail only goes so far. Mainland has a comprehensive rail transport system, so its easier and cheaper if you factor in all the road tolls. I've been everywhere on Okinawa, mom told me all the war stories from when she grew up. Much sadness. They also are more superstitious than mainlanders.
@phillydisco

I never got the impression that Okinawans were outdoorsy. I saw more hikers on transit on the mainland. I guess more mountains. Jungles like in Okinawa aren't conducive to hiking. I saw mainly G.I.s enjoying the outdoors, with the occasional vacationing tourists, either from the mainland or china

This area is very beautiful though. Perhaps take a trip further up north at Kin near Camp Hansen some day. One note, and sorry to be that guy, but I looked through the comments and did not see a note of the name of the base the guy at 4:12 mentions. It's actually Camp Foster rather than Camp Boster. Perhaps the mask muffled the voice. Thanks for sharing this.

It’s because they/we don’t really get to interact with Japanese as much. Especially when it’s a place that’s extremely military dominated. There’s so many Americans. On your left you’ll see an American base and to your right you’ll see another American base. And almost all just work and live inside the base. Especially when the pandemic broke, we weren’t allowed to leave the base.

Started Studying and learning Japanese and it's terrifying, I move to Okinawa and I am excited. 1) wanna get tan again, 2) wanna learn how to play both the Sanshin and the Tsugaru Shamisen. 3) Just want to see the history and learn about the Culture. Always loved the music and and style of Japanese folk music, and looking forward to the move and I hope COVID continues to fade away into just being another type of influenza.(Know it's horrible of me to say it, but I just want to be able to travel the world again.)

Hi Takashi! Next time you come to Okinawa, let me know! It would be cool to link up as I’m a foreigner living here who is not associated with the military!
