His experience could have been way different, if he have had a better Japanese level. That could simply allow him to connect more with people. I would say that some of those places in which foreigners are not usually welcomed, can very likely change their mind if another Japanese person joins you. Or if simply they can tell right away that they will not have issues communicating. Learning about the culture also helps a lot, they can tell for sure he comes from abroad but they can also tell things they consider to be polite and appropriate from a person that visits their country. In my case, I am trying to perfect my Japanese best possible.
