Hi Samantha! I'm so sorry for not replying, it's been so long since you asked this... If it's still useful, I would say to annotate themes that naturally come out in the text rather than the other way around, if it's a book/play and you're a few pages in, you'll start to see which themes come out most, then create a colour code/ key using highlighters or sticky tabs and highlight the strongest examples of that theme. In terms of annotating literary techniques, I would say read the text out loud, that always helps me, then you can really understand how it's being heard, whether there's particularly sounds or patterns of language. I hope this helps and I'm very sorry for the late reply :)
