Cole The Cornstar, aka Cole, is a 4th generation family farmer from Central Iowa who is the life force behind his family’s 1,700 acre farm. Cole promotes agriculture by filming his day-to-day adventures with his Dad (Daddy Cornstar) and brother (Cooper) on the farm. With a lot of help from Daddy Cornstar, Cole instills humor and education into his videos fit for both young adults and adults. Despite being 22-years old, Cole has an old-fashion work ethic with an innovative approach toward agricultural technology and practices. Cole's mission is to prove the American Dream is not dead and be a megaphone for agricultural education and innovation, from technological advances in farming equipment to conservation practices.

Put a small pit below grade for the top of the well, if it’s done right you’ll be able to drive right over it, like a manhole cover. Ours has been this way for over 40 years.

Dig a hole around the well pipe. Shorten it and lower the well into the ground. Pour cement around it and cover it up with a man-hole cover. Like a city street. Then you can remove cover to access it if necessary

I prefer to build it a house. And respect the work of Grandpa! Here in Miami for no reason they're making rotondas "to make us to slow down a little bit on some streets", if there you can not build something to respect that well, you may loose a piece of a truck and maybe damage the well some way.

@@tractorboy4148 I worked for a well company for 3 years, we drilled every thing from 36" bore hole and 16" casing iragation wells to 12" bore hole 6" cased house/stock wells. We even sunk a 8" 1300' deep for a oil field water supply well. I was usually on the drill crew but i set pumps from time to time. We pulled wells that were down in 8ft deep pits, no problem as long as there weren't snakes when making the initial connection. After that we had special tables, dogs and doors for that exact scenario. Added about 10min to to the pulling process. Also to mention a 400" well even if its 6 or 4 in needs a professional machine to pull it, especially If you don't want to spend a week doing it. Well pit will probably add 100 bucks to the process if a professional company pulls it, not a problem.

When you get to consider extending the drive around the building, take your flatbed and do a few loops. That way you know better how far to go out and not clip the buildings by going too short. Then maybe set some stakes or send up a drone to map it out.

COUPLE OF SOLUTIONS FOR YOU!!! 1) I'd dig a pond where the spring is in your yard. Having a nice swimming hole after a long sweaty day is amazing. You have the equipment to dig one out yourself. 2) I'd just cap that well in the middle of the driveway. Dig 4-6 feet down and put a cap on it.

A body of water is a perfect spot for bugs to spawn and congregate, not the best idea in the middle of a farm, you would have to make sure there is fish / frogs, etc. in it, not just dig a hole and fill it with water or bugs will get out of control. Its gonna bring in more birds and other animals also.

No! No! No! Keep the well!!! Iron rich water is great for trees, grass and shrubs. And gardens. You need to think about putting in an unground sprinkler system in now, BEFORE you seed the lawn. Build a little "outhouse" size building over the well. Run an underground sprinkler system off it. No more danger of running over it. Trust an old Grandma on this one.

I myself would also keep it, but see no reason why a manhole like city sewers have couldn't be set and the pipe cut down and accessed via the manhole if need arises. no more obstacle , can be snow plowed, and can still access the well if pump needs servicing.

Hey cole. I plant grass for a living, so I thought I would give some tips for your yard. For seed I would find a nice local seed distributor and buy contractor mix seed blend. It Will give you a high yielding product. Will have 4 types of grass in it and will all blend together to make a vary nice yard. Then I would highly recommend a 19-19-19 fertilizer the best stuff Iv ever used. The nitrogen gives the seed such a boost at the start. It’s expensive but works wonders. And I would cover the seed. Sounds weird but hear me out. You can buy stuff called futerra environment. You lay your seed and fertilizer and then put this over the top. It’s does a lot of stuff. It helps with erosion, like you pointed out in the video with all the rain. It will help hold the soil in place while your grass is growing it’s roots. It keeps the water by the seed. Unlike sod or not covering the seed. You don’t have to water it near as much. The Environet holds the water and helps keeps the seed well nourished. It also acts as a compost. It has sawdust on the outside so as the covering decomposes it adds to the soil for more nutrients. The best part yet is you don’t have to pull it up. The net naturally brakes down from the UV light of the sun. It’s pretty awesome. Grass can be vary sensitive. Grass likes nice soft soil. If you put the environet over the top you won’t even have to tamp in the seed. It’s pretty slick. And if you plan on usin the dirt you have already I would highly recommend renting a power rake for the skid loader. We use that for most our jobs. Saves money on dirt and can help level and fluff up a yard. Not sure if you will see this or not. But this is what I would HIGHLY recommend. It’s not cheap but I promise you will have better yields than just having normal seed just sitting on the surface. And even planting the yard in July will be just fine with this stuff. Will help from the seeds getting cooked from the sun. It’s amazing product. Thanks for the videos. Enjoy the rest of the summer.

Ok, so any plant that you put in the ground needs water daily to establish it roots. Preferably in the morning so it's well hydrated for the day. Did you do that? Same rule for seeds. They need to be hydrated to germinate. The tomatoes croaked because you hid them in those clay pots. They need sun and lots of daily morning water. There may not be enough sun over there also. 6 to 8 hours is needed for all the crops you put it. The good news is you have beautiful deep rich black soil. Some of the best in the world. Find another spot close to the house and water source that gets a full 8 hours of sun and try again !

Also maybe some potting mix worked into the soil for easier root spread. Your compost will be a big help eventually too. Love seeing the clean up progress and how large farms operate. I mentioned this previously so thought I would suggest again. One thing you can do for watering your garden if you have the time. If you set up a rain barrel connected to the troughs from your house, you can put a timed pump on it. Take some PEX/flexible plastic plumbing hose and run it out to your garden. reduce the sizing down to about 1/4" hose and run that along your rows of vegetable. Put pin holes all along the length of the 1/4" and then you can water your plants pretty reliably. (provided your rain barrel stays moderately full) (tip get big rain barrel)

I'm confused about farming. I love this channel but it appears to me that most of the profit on this farm comes from the KZbin video revenues and maybe from Moma Cornstar's day job. . Is that correct? In an earlier video it was explained that no one takes a salary from this farm since it's owned by the family. Expenses such as electricity are paid by the farm and in effect food and housing is provided but that's it. Why have a "business" that provides no income to anyone and where the stated intention is to never sell the farm? Why put all profits back into a farm that will never be sold when no one is making any money from the farm?

Gray Bryan, The farm does infact pay for itself through out the year, Such as tractors, Parts and Fertilizer but KZbin comes in for food, Completely Changing the house, and so fourth. But I shouldn’t really be telling you this because this is just an educated guess I’ve made throughout the hundreds of videos I have watched, And as a current Minnesota farmer I must say.....Farming is expensive.

It costs money to maintain a farm and its equipment. Farmers love the job and the lifestyle, and most of us have to have an outside job (or at least our spouse does) to make money beyond breaking even. The farm is a business and your personal income is separate. It can be a bit complicated to explain but having a good accountant or accounting program is important.
@boat6868
@boat6868 4 жыл бұрын
@Gray BryanI have about that same interpretation from the same video that you are referring to. One thing I would mention is that I did understand from that video that Daddy Cornstar gets a whopper of a payment for the "rental value" of the land. That payment is included in the expenses that Cole was talking about and contributes to the overall "loss". I admire their hard work but I also wonder why not just lease the 1,000+ acres that they own to someone else and Daddy Cornstar would still get that money, and then they could all work jobs off the farm, like Momma Cornstar, and have more overall net income. I wonder if the upside potential is so great (when the crop yield is great and prices are high) that those really great years pay for the years with "losses". I personally doubt it ...but I wonder. All that said, like you, I enjoy the channel and appreciate this family and what they do, because without farmers we would be in tough shape.
@noyopacific
@noyopacific 4 жыл бұрын
Cole may have glossed over a few details. The farming business may effectively be covering some of the families personal expenses. By calling these costs business-related expenses they avoid the income taxes that would be due if they paid wages to the family members and everyone paid their own personal expenses. The farming business might not provide wages or profits, at least for accounting purposes, however the land is increasing in market value. "For 2019, Iowa's average farmland was valued at $7,432 per acre. That's an increase of $168, or 2.3%, from 2018 farmland values, according to the 2019 Iowa State University Land Value Survey." If farming were truly a losing business as Cole suggests, what caused the value of Iowa farmland to increase by $168 an acre last year? If they sold the farm there would also likely be stiff taxes due on the gains in value. And if they sold the farm and used part of that money to pay off debt, they might also have to pay taxes on part of the money they got even when that went to pay off the debt (taxes on debt relief.) They seem to be living a pretty good life but they may also be somewhat trapped by their farm debt and the deferred taxes they would have to pay if they sold out.
