My dad was a staunch Catholic and always really admired Billy Graham. We went to see him while he was in New Zealand. My dad was badly wounded, losing an eye, in the German New Zealand war of 1941.

Bishop Fulton Sheen and Billy Graham found themselves together on a 3 hour train trip and had deep discussions about handling fame, staying authentic and much more and were always friends. Both of them were guests on WML.

Fun fact: both mystery guests were preachers at one time. In his youth, Anthony Quinn was an apprentice Pentecostal preacher. He borrowed the gesture of Zorba the Greek's dramatically outstretched hand from a well-known Pentecostal preacher in the 1920's and 1930's.

Purple Capricorn -- One interesting fact about Theordore Seuss Geisel, better known by his nom de plume, Dr. Seuss, is how he pronounced his name. He always said "Doctor Soyss" to rhyme "choice". Unfortunately, when I try to pronounce it the way he pronounced it himself ("eu" in a German-derived words is pronounced like "oi" in English), people look at me as though I'm nuts.

I love how Joey Bishop cracks up John Daly. I can't remember seeing him laugh so hard and so consistently at the remarks of any other panelist, including Fred Allen. Also, I realize by watching these Joey Bishop shows how little I knew about his act, the whole deadpan thing. There's a sense of innocence about him, so that it's almost like a precocious child's response to adult matters.

I attended Billy Graham's crusade in San Jose, California, about 1980. One of the things that impressed me most was that he encouraged people to get involved in their local churches (as I already was), rather than trying to gain followers of and donors to his own ministry, the way most television preachers seem to do. Those who criticize him for getting chummy with politicians *may* have a point, but I think it's unfair to lump him in with the majority of televangelists on money issues.

Graham ministered to all of them during his time and when he was too infirm to travel, they sought him. No one is perfect and he made some missteps along the way, but generally was quick to realize them and apologize for them. As far as dealing with the general public, he was looking to make followers of the Lord, not of himself. That's not the MO of a charlatan or huckster.

Neil, I am not a fan of the TV preachers you refer to. But, there is most likely a difference. Most of the TV preachers i see today are pastors of a church. Therefore, followers are welcome. Graham was an evangelist. You pass converts on to local churches so they can grow. Different ministries.

Neil Midkiff - I think that it is difficult to speak of or think of religious personages getting involved in politics. The founders of our country tried to put in place policies to protect us from intrusion into politics by religious leaders. Billy Graham should have known better but at least he refrained from using his renown to advance himself monetarily. How different are things these days. Our country was settled in its earliest history by people trying to escape from religious tyranny. I don't speak pejoratively about religion. It may well be a basic human drive to learn the answers to the deepest and most terrifying questions we have. But the answers some of us have come up with should not be imposed as policy on us as a society. Let each person find his or her own way.

The First Amendment limits the federal government, not religious personages: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." We can't have a national church; elsewhere, the constitution says that there can be no religious test as a qualification for public office. Those are good limits on government. But the concept that everyone in government must act as if they were atheist, or that every professed believer must stay silent about politics, is not supported by history; it goes against the "free exercise" clause.

The thing I find interesting, in Rev. Graham's story, is that this was in a period of comparative laxness; the Berlin Wall was built in 1961, thus ensuring no contact between the Germanies, and one had to smuggle Bibles into the then-Soviet Union, up through the early 90s. So he was there at a fortuitous time.

He was not the first preacher to appear consistently on television, but he understood how to use TV better than any of the preachers of his time. He appeared one night on "What's My Line?" -- and generated a couple of great spontaneous lines from young comic Joey Bishop. It is interesting to see the response he got from the New York sophisticates of late night CBS TV. The very Catholic Dorothy Kilgallen did not stand up for him as she did years before for the first great TV preacher Father Fulton J Sheen. [Kilgallen asked all mystery guests that first question of hers in late 1960 in an effort to get Casey Stengl if he ever appeared. oh bru uther] This is quite typical of his crusade style -- he was not afraid to go into lions dens.. Some of the longest and biggest of his crusades were in New York City and to big success IN MEMORIAM -- William Franklin Graham, Junior "REVEREND BILLY GRAHAM"

jerry king The 60s, the second half esp. Is when all hell broke loose with the Counter-Culture movement. The Hippies seemed to have been nice people by and large what with their "Peace and Love" slogans (I mean, nothing wrong at all with peace and love), but they struck me as being a bit in the lost side. I mean really. Although I wasn't around back then to see and experience it all in midst of it or on the sidelines, I felt this from watching numerous movies, TV shows documentaries, reading books and mag articles, listening to music etc. in part and whole touching on or centering around "Flower Child" values and norms. In point of fact, I's my true feeling a lot of them kids got really messed up in upshot from kicking aside to oblivion traditional Western values.

Graham was one of the few I really could respect, because on his crusades he worked with local churches and encouraged his hearers to get involved with churches in their community. I'm pretty much an atheist at this point in my life, but I must say, it was refreshing to see how civil and courteous everyone was in allowing Billy Graham the time to go into a bit of detail about the somewhat recent Crusade he had led in Germany. If this show were to have been aired in modern times, it probably would have tried to keep away from themes of god and religion in the hopes of "not offending anyone". I note that Anthony Quinn's co-star in "Becket" was, as John Daly pointed out, Sir Laurence Olivier, who played the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas à Becket, opposite Quinn's King Henry II. I was intrigued to find out that the play was written in French by Jean Anouilh and premiered in 1959 as "Becket ou l'honneur de Dieu" in Paris on Oct. 8, 1959. It premiered in English translation a year later on Broadway on Oct. 5, 1960, just four days before this episode of WML aired. The Broadway production won four Tony awards and during its extended production, at one point during its run, Quinn and Olivier switched roles so that Quinn played the assassinated Archbishop and Olivier played the King. I wish I'd seen the play back then -- and I wish I'd seen it twice to see the roles played both ways, had I been old enough in 1960 to appreciate it. As many know, there was a film adaptation of "Becket" in 1964 starring Richard Burton as the Archbishop and Peter O'Toole as the King. I've never seen it, but now I think I need to.

You have the story slightly wrong: Quinn and Olivier starred on B'way in BECKETT for six months. It then closed and went on tour with Olivier playing Quinn's role opposite Arthur Kennedy, who took over Olivier's original role. Following a short tour, BECKETT returned to Broadway for a month in the Spring of '61 so critics and audiences could see Olivier in the other role opposite Kennedy. (Hope this isn't TOO confusing!)

Once again, Arlene stood to shake hands with Billy Graham, since he was a clergyman, but Dorothy did not -- Dorothy would only stand to shake hands with Roman Catholic nuns or clergy, never a Protestant. Both women stood for the chili con carne lady, though, no doubt out of respect for her age -- and both Dorothy and Arlene seem to stand for contestants who are senior citizens.

dgoldg It always amazes me when watching this show when they talk about "new" shows, books, songs, films, etc. that have by now been considered classics for many years. It's hard to imagine a time when "Green Eggs and Ham" wasn't well-known by every child and adult in America! Arlene even mispronounced Dr. Seuss's name here, and she's usually good about pronunciations. I had a similar reaction to the episode with Julie Andrews from February, 1960, when she honestly answered "no" to the question of whether she'd ever been in motion pictures.

SaveThe TPC She actually pronounced "Seuss" closer to the correct form than you might think. The vowel pair isn't supposed to be pronounced as one would pronounce "oo", but more like "oi". Ted Geisel's lineage was Germanic, after all.

Bishop had a reputation as a hanger on with the Rat Pack rather than an entertainment force in his own right a la Sinatra, Martin, and Davis. I remember him from Hollywood Squares but he wasn't as funny there. I have never seen him perform as well anywhere else as on WML, one of the best of the guest panelists.

Billy Graham had a calling, it was not a line. He lived very simply, had a nice place up in the mountains, but not expensive, as you might think considering all the money he brought in. He really was a saintly man, he meant it. Counseled every president that wanted it, regardless of party. Wasn't he handsome, too, with that beautiful hair.
