What I so enjoy about these episodes is the impeccable manners of all concerned. The guests and panelists are addressed as Miss/Mrs/Mr. The gentlemen stand up to shake hands, the ladies remain seated (unless a lady guest is much older), Mr Daly helps the ladies to be seated, it is just wonderful to see people treat each other with such natural courtesy.

This is TV ?? The two ends, didn't like each other! You need to stop hanging with conservatives traitors! at 68 I still stand for lady's, and still say Mr, Mrs, sir... I just never take my hat off in doors, That's BS ! And in 55' there was there was only about 150million people in the US ,alot less Ego's and guns, now 360 million. And nothing but Ego's and guns! BTW there was systemic racism then and still today ! No one was mister, and miss, to black, and the Indian nations people! I'm white and grew up seeing this all my life, and in the logistics world too ! The Philosophy of hateful people haven't changed... only their political partys ! Rosey classes, those good old days, of sundown town's, and red lining that most white people have no idea about! I've met people from all over the world, and no one loves this country more then an immigrants. India, Egypt to Jamaica they all taught me something! Time release capsules, and how the sun shines and a very little French. It's religion that spreads hate and kills ! and like very great nation, it will kill America too !

Yes, she gets an "A" for that! Very charming, funny, completely entertaining, and the singing was a great ploy for disguising her voice and misleading the panel while pleasing the audience thoroughly. John Daly enjoyed it, and I think the panel even had fun being misled. How could they not have?

I may have said it before -- because I've seen this episode before and enjoyed it before, too -- but Esther Williams was, I think, perfect as a mystery guest. That's because she clearly had fun singing her answers and the panel had fun asking her questions once they knew she'd sing the answers. I think the best mystery guests are the ones who have a good time with their answering, because if they have a good time, everyone else does, too, the entire panel, John Daly, the studio audience and the audience at home. Some of the best mystery guests are the ones that come up with a funny way of answering -- and misleading the panel -- and the Esther Williams' singing of her answers was the perfect ploy! (I also note that Dorothy Kilgallen assumed facts not in evidence --as she often does -- by asking questions about the M.G.'s singing. Just because a M.G. sings her answers doesn't mean she sings as part of her profession.) Anyway, Esther Williams rates an unqualified "A" from me for her performance as a mystery guest -- let's make it an A+, in fact!

Esther Williams initially regarded her whole movie career as a marvelous joke, although she took it more seriously once it became clear she was more than a novelty item to the public. The advent of realistic Technicolor was a great advantage. She choreographed her numbers (hardly anyone else could), practically inventing a new genre, the 'aquamusical'; and she paved the way for synchronized swimming as an artistic Olympic sport. She can only be compared with Sonia Henie for durability as a specialist performer who could top the bill in expensive movies. Henie made audiences conscious of figure-skating as a thing of beauty, as Esther did swimming. Before TV, people went to cinemas to see such spectacles. Both gals worked hard: Sonia became quite a deft comedienne, and Esther even gave a good account of herself in a straight and dry role in 'The Unguarded Moment'. Only Johnny Weissmuller among the men parlayed sporting accomplishment into stardom.

Esther Williams was an athletic swimmer before she engaged in more picturesque swimming for the entertainment world. Before she graduated HS in 1939, she set national records, won three U.S. championships and was likely to make the U.S. Olympic team in 1940, missing out on that experience when WWII caused the Olympic Games to be cancelled. The summer games had originally been scheduled for Tokyo and then moved to Helsinki before the plug was pulled completely. In her WML appearance, she presents a tall (5' 8½") and beautiful athletic figure.

Great sense of humor on the part of Esther Williams -- not a hint of self-importance in her answers. She certainly was there to have fun and entertain the audience in the process. I loved her response of "Conference, please!" I don't often laugh out loud when I'm by myself, but there are times I have to and that was one of them! Miss Francis: One would consider you an actress, then, rather than a singer. Miss Williams: Conference, please! Me: LOL. One of the best mystery guests ever!

Esther Williams was wonderful, her auto-biography was among the very best "celebrity books" I have read (and I have read many dozens). She, like most of the rest of us, had her share of tragedy and heartbreak. Fame and money is no insulation from rough times. Nonetheless, Esther, through faith and good humor, prevailed - passing on in her 92nd year in 2013. Bless her heart!

John Daly said that the second contestant is an "anesthetician." An anesthetist is a nurse trained to safely administer anesthesia. An anesthesiologist is a doctor who specializes in administering anesthetics before, during, and after medical procedures. I can find no definition of "anesthetician", and the auto-correct feature of my browser tries to correct the word to "aesthetician." So I think that John Daly made up a word.

Ironically, Jo Anne Worley would graduate from HS and start her professional career in 1955. Somehow after graduating from Lowell HS in NW Indiana, she found her way to the tiny town of Blauvelt (NY) in Rockland County that was in the early stages of transitioning from rural to suburban with the recent completion of the Tappan Zee Bridge. It's a town I know well as I lived there from 1960 to 1981 (except for college and about a year living in NYC). Miss Worley came there to became a professional member of a small theater company, but left to go to college in Texas before my family moved there. Eventually she would be part of the initial cast of "Laugh In" with the famous tag line, "Is that a chicken joke?" And she would go on to make many game show appearances after that.

@@esmeephillips5888 Interestingly, Esther Wiliams apparently hung out with Grace Kelly for a while. When the latter came to do a film with MGM, Williams in a display of her humor nailed a star on the door of Kelly's dressing room at the studio (apparently to joke that a star was in the house). A picture of her doing this survives and is online.

Love it at 20:59 when Dorothy asks her if she has children and she joyfully sings 'Oh yes!'. Through all the ups and downs, Esther always put her kids first and they all turned out well. When she wrote in her memoirs about how Joan Crawford's and Bette Davis's daughters had dished dirt on their mothers, Esther knew that none of her three would do so.

Well, I think she did do a couple of musicals, Neptune's Daughter and Skirts Ahoy. Skirts Ahoy is probably one of the weirdest films I've ever seen. It's supposed to be a military comedy involving the Navy WAVES, and it was written by a woman, but one of the songs has Williams' character and two others literally moaning to a restaurant crowd how BADLY they want a boyfriend (titled "What Good is A Gal Without A Guy?"). It does have some empowering scenes for the gals, but other times you wonder if they were on drugs when they made the film.

Never seen a chicken wearing glasses 😮, and we've raised a few, etc, I wonder if this practice is still being done and how often. It would have to be for free range ones,to be needed I'd think. WOW, never heard of such.😊

orgonko the wildly untamed Thank you for the recommendation. She was delightful and so into the game. Loved her showing her roots and her falsetto "Conference please!" As much as I've enjoyed her films, never would have thought she'd be such a fun guest. You know some "starlets" like to play the role and others are more let-the-hair-down type. EW seems to be the latter.

I just watched Esther Williams' two appearances back to back - she's delightful. MGM should have given her funnier scripts.

I agree about the screenplays, but Esther was so naturally humorous and quizzical that it hardly mattered. What strikes one about her 'aquamusicals' today is the light-heartedness with which she carries herself: sharing the camp, lavish, crazy absurdity of the spectacle with the audience. You can't laugh AT Esther- she got there before you. No amount of chlorine in the pool could dim the twinkle in her eye. The daring and imagination with which she infused her routines are a bonus.

@@esmeephillips5888 "You can't laugh AT Esther, she got there before you." Well said. And her movies are fun, I just would love to see what she could have done with writing that matched her natural wit.

My uncle had a farm in New Jersey at the time this episode aired. He had chickens, and they had black, opaque glasses, similar to the ones shown here, so that they would not see one another and peck one another. I only saw them once, but I will never forget it.
