Jill Jansen I agree. I remember panel shows in the UK even in the 1970s and early 1980s where there was particular effort to be polite and graceful as you say. I wouldn't say this was reflection on society but more an application of codes for television which guided conduct. Once it was no longer expected and eventually abandoned then that civilised air of decency faded and went. You never know....things do go in cycles, maybe people will get tired of modern 'who cares?' type approaches. Personally I wouldn't know if they do because I've unplugged my TV aerial anyway. Done with modern TV!

Ethel Barrymore, was the girl who stole Winston Churchill's heart. She was incredibly gorgeous and glamorous when she was young and as a young man Churchill was hopelessly in love with her. They dated but when he proposed she declined. Historians love to speculate about how history may have changed had she said yes and he had perhaps immigrated to America to be with her. Which he was prepared to do. As it was he went into a deep depression for months, gained weight and never really got over her even though he had a happy marriage with his wife Clementine.

Ethel Barrymore is the very epitome of a "great" actress, famous on the stage first, then in movies, and the member of an acting family with siblings Lionel and John, not to mention parents and great-niece. I would have thought Hal Block's question "Do you also have a wonderful profile?" might be more applicable to John Barrymore, who was well known as "The Great Profile" after he starred in the film by that very name in which he played a satirical version of himself.
@g.tucker86822 жыл бұрын

Paul LaD That was because the Barrymore family, John, Ethel and Lionel Barrymore were considered through their talents and achievements "the first family of Broadway". True legends of acting. No-one were so talented nor so firmly cemented the reputation of Broadway. It might not even be held in as high regard today but for the Barrymores. Drew Barrymore is a distant but direct descendant of one of them. We can always see Lionel Barrymore as the mean, scheming banker who tries to steal the Bailey building and loan every Christmastime in "It's a Wonderful Life" with Jjjjjiiimmy Stewart.

Why does she deserve respect? 73 yaars old is a good start. That she was an actress 50 years ago at the turn of the century might gather some respect from the current actors on the panel. She, I suspect as I don't really know her career how well she actred, they admired her capabilities in the profession. And they may have known of her work as an activist. When Doris Day was doing "Young At Heart" with Frank Sinatra she said Ethel Barrymore was not in the best heath but always was on time, knew her lines, and totally inhabited her role as a matriarchal family member, Doris also said Sinatra treated Barrymore like a queen, always making sure she was comfortable and being taken care of. Doris also said Sinatra intervened once when he felt a cast member was being rude to Doris. It was often assumed Day and Sinatra did not get along doing the film but they certainly did get along; they were playing two characters trying their best to nurture a romance when they came from two different worlds.

The sponsor of the show, "Stopette", did not like Hal Block, because he was not drawing the kind of viewers to the show that would buy their product; women and urban men who worked in office jobs. Stopette forced CBS's hand, and made CBS fire Hal Block from the show. He was replaced by Steve Allen (prior to his stint as the first host of "The Tonight Show" on NBC). A year or so later, Stopette was bought out by Helene Curtis, and then left the show as an advertiser a year or so later. If CBS could have fought harder to keep Hal Block on the show, he would have remained there for the show's entire 17-year run.

I think Bennett picked up on some clues that were given earlier. At 7:47, Arlene is incredulous that something that could have pearls in it does not require creativity on the part of the person who deals with it. At this point, John explains, "we were talking about a *basic* product." I think that's what put Bennett on the right track, because after he asks about mining, he confirms at about 8:52 that they're talking about "a basic product... like gold." So I think he kind of put 2 and 2 together -- knowing the product had something to do with jewelry, yet was a "basic" product, as opposed to a manufactured one, when the contestant dealt with it.

@janinegaston606810 жыл бұрын
Franklin Heller directed every episode of What's My Line except the first in 1950 -- or except for the first and second? TV.com comments documented that a while back. Heller also directed the To Tell The Truth episode that CBS telecast on Monday, March 19, 1962 after it was videotaped during a time frame we don't know -- earlier that day? Three days earlier? Anyway, Heller's name appears in the closing credits. He also worked regularly on a live 1950s show on which performers performed instead of playing a game -- Omnibus. He apparently burned the candle at both ends for several years, at least. On yet another show with performers performing, Heller directed the unknown James Dean and Betsy Palmer. They played each others' romantic interests. I have seen Heller's 1987 video interview where he recalls Dean / Palmer but I have not seen the kinescope itself, which does exist.

Miss Barrymore was 73 years old when she appeared on WML and in addition to emphysema, had suffered for many years with a heart condition. She eventually passed away from a cardiovascular disease a couple of months before what would have been her 80th birthday. It would be my hope that any smokers on the panel and especially John Daly (sitting right next to her) would have restrained themselves from smoking at any time during this episode. Unfortunately, in 1952 doctors were still lending their names to cigarette ads and many considered the aromatic effects of cigarettes to be _beneficial_ to the smoker's lungs. According to one scientific journal article, less than one-third of all doctors in 1960 believed there was a connection between cigarette smoke and lung cancer. The harmful effects of second-hand smoke took even longer to be recognized. My family's doctor in Queens was rarely without a cigarette in his mouth, even when coming to the house when I or my brother had a cold. He didn't have far to go for the house call. We lived across the street from him. My mother tells the story that when I was 6 months old, she saw our doctor working in the garden. She carried me over to him, handed me over the chain link fence to confirm that I had the mumps. Every six months, my brother nicely brought home the childhood diseases: mumps, measles and chicken pox. So I never knew I had them. I was finished with them by age 1½. But I digress. And if I was Orson Bean, I would be buzzed to end my turn! Anyway, I can imagine a show business veteran like Miss Barrymore, with a "show must go on" ethic, virtually willing herself to hang in there to make it off stage and out of sight of John Daly and the panel before collapsing. Had she collapsed in their sight, the gasps would have resounded.

For Ethel Barrymore admirers, I highly recommend you see her in "The Story of 3 Loves" in the segment that features Leslie Caron, Farley Granger and Ricky Nelson. She is memorable; and in my opinion, deserved an Oscar nomination for her supporting performance. (But it was a very tough year in that category.)

@billolsen43606 жыл бұрын
Ethel Barrymore was even better than royalty...royalty inherits titles from their titles & offices from their often-murderous ancestors. Ethel, John & Lionel all earned their way to the top. I was too young to see her movies in the theaters, but have seen everyone I could get on DVD or online.

@janinegaston606810 жыл бұрын
What's My Line? I hope the following information doesn't make you bereft again. Regarding Ethel Barrymore's segment, I have learned from a video at the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills what happened immediately before she entered and signed in and immediately after she shook the panelists' hands. You have to visit Paley to watch and listen to this -- a 1987 interview with Franklin Heller. Rather than risk another bereft episode at Gary's home, I shall say only that Ethel was suffering from emphysema, her Wikipedia article insinuates that she could not have gotten sick until several years after this 1952 live telecast, and she was a great actress even when playing the part of herself. She may have inspired Brittany Murphy to put on a remarkable acting performance while appearing as herself in public. Gary, please proceed with your uploading at your own pace.

I realize this was a 'different time', but from the beginning I never really cared for the 'walk down'. And infinitely more bizarre to me was Dorothy's over-the-top 'inspections'. At 5:45 Dorothy asks "Can it be made of different things?" and got a "no" answer. This doesn't seem right to me, no matter which way the "product" was being discussed. They had been concentrating on the jewelry angle for a while (something decorative, worn, doesn't cover much) and it seems clear that Dorothy was asking her question with that in mind. Besides pearls etc. as mentioned, hardly any jewelry is made of pure gold, which is too soft to be practical; it's almost always alloyed with some copper, silver, nickel, or other metals. If instead the product was the ore dug up by the miner, that too has different things; South Dakota gold is usually found in quartz deposits.

John was counting fur as clothing 😹
@MrWindermere1235 жыл бұрын
How fashions change! Ethel Barrymore was wearing a fur stole around her neck - it looked like two whole animals' worth when she shook hands with the panel. In her time fur was a luxurious, desirable thing to wear but today a stole with the animal's head still attached would be repulsive. When my grandma died, she left a similar fur stole but nobody wanted it. It must have cost a fortune when bought but it looked creepy with a fox's head at one end.

oldfart4751 The CBS WML episodes are all in the public domain, so there is no copyright infringement. What is upsetting about these copycat channels is that they are stealing the exact versions of the episodes which were first uploaded to KZbin by What's My Line? @2508bona10 жыл бұрын
It may be that the creators of the show weren't sure how easy the guessing of occupations would turn out to be. They may have figured that the panel might pick up a hint through the walk through and use it in the game. They soon learned differently but the walk through survived for a bit longer, more out of habit than anything else.
