A bizarre coincidence. I used to frequent a pub here in England owned by Marston's Brewery - which was called, unexpectedly, the Wyandotte Inn. A member of the family that built the pub in the late 19th century was in America at the time, and wrote home to report that there was a local Indian tribe (his words not mine) called the Wyandotte. The name was appropriated for the pub, which for many years had a sign outside depicting a highly inauthentic native American complete with headdress.

maynardsmoreland- Looks like most of the women during those times wear their hair short, even those considered beautiful. It is rare to see a guest with long hair and it is usually a guest who is considered beautiful. A much larger percentage of women these days wear their hair long.

According to a book written about her, she got interested in the business after spending time with some musician friends, The Beatles, in the early 60s. She managed the MC5 locally until she booked them to open for the Dave Clark Five. She realized then that they had "made it big" and she couldn't do anything else for them. Joe DiMaggio was a friend and attended her funeral; Johnny Carson sent flowers. www.momentumbooks.com/product/shooting-star/

G-T got its money's worth from Joey Bishop. He appeared in three different WML episodes in a short period of time. 1 Mystery guest in the 8:00 pm ET videotape session. 2 Unscheduled cameo with Buddy Hackett at 10:30 p.m. ET live broadcast. That night must have been hysterical back stage. 3 Guest panelist the next week on live TV.

soulierinvestments Joey Bishop made two more appearances on this show. Both were in 1966. He made a mystery guest appearance, which was taped on July 17 and aired on September 4, followed by an appearance on the panel on the live taping of the July 24 episode. Helen Gurley Brown was also there as a panelist on that live taping. The July 24, 1966 episode was the very last time the show recorded on black & white videotape.

DebbieFaubion Do you mean because she felt bad about ending the game so quickly and asked John to flip the cards? Yes, she certainly could be quite sweet at times -- she almost always had kind words for Bennett and the other panelists when she introduced them or said good night to them too. Of course, I doubt that the head designer of the Christian Dior fashion line really needed that 50 dollars so badly..... ;)

SaveThe TPC Yes, in my opinion. It was just a nice segment where she didn't drag things out with a bunch of "yes" questions and had a genuine spirit. I don't know...do others see it this way as well?

DebbieFaubion Yes, after I posted my reply, I also thought about how she seemed to get genuinely excited about the thought of having this famous and talented designer there -- and even kind of wistful with wishing for some of his designs. I also remembered other times when she asked John to flip all the cards for contestants who were less well off as well. When she first guessed him so quickly, I thought she must have recognized him and that she should have disqualified herself, but her explanation of how she figured it out so quickly seemed sincere.

Daly mentions this being the summertime. But actually it was taped during the springtime. May 5, 1963, to be exact. In fact, it would also explain the Joey Bishop cameo in that night's live taping, which was taped AFTER this episode. One more pre-taped episode of the 1962-1963 season left.

***** In fact, this time they're also joking with it. About Daly's "keeping cool" to Robert Q,, and his "It's difficult in this August weather", then laughter from the audience. They keep on coming back to the theme later too. I suppose there was a chill day in May, when this was taped. ;)

A couple of things about Joey Bishop. I think like a lot of comics of the time, he seemed to be channeling Jack E. Leonard for a few moments. Also, and many of you may know this, "The Joey Bishop Show" was, I believe, the only program to start it's run in black and white (1961 on NBC) move to color casting (1962-64 on NBC) and then return to Black and White (1964 on CBS).

Did any of that program ever showed up on DVD?? For a while, all its tapes and films were missing. Then I heard some of it had turned up somewhere. I read its appearing on two networks both in b&w and color made it problematic to market.

On the first contestant, "Mr. X", Bennett does something completely out of character. John chooses Bennett to start the questioning, and Bennett does NOT make a comment about ham and X!
@loissimmons6558
@loissimmons6558 5 жыл бұрын
Actually it is also unusual for John to choose Bennett to question a male challenger. Usually Bennett is the first to question a female challenger, while Arlene or Dorothy lead off when it is a male challenger (at least when it is a non-celebrity challenger). When the blindfolds are on, anything goes because the panel doesn't know whether the challengers are male, female or a group.

When USSR premier Kruschev and his wife visited the USA in 1959, Dorothy got into hot water by criticizing Mrs K for how badly she dressed on tour. Is it just me, and I don't want to be mean, but is Robert Q. Lewis almost devoid of personality? I know his act is that of an MC (Master Of Ceremonies) but on this show, others I've seen on KZbin, and my memories I have of him as a youth, he just kind of hangs there, with not much to say. I may be wrong about this and invite other opinions. But I don't think he was any Bud Collier, who was at least interesting to look at.

I trust this means you never stumbled on any of my prior comments about Robert Q. Lewis or you'd know it's not just you! He may have been a perfectly wonderful person in real life-- I don't intend any aspersions on his private personality-- but on WML, I find him nearly insufferable, his only distinguishing characteristic being how phony and smarmy his endless fawning compliments to the contestants were. I dislike him so much, and I'm such a small, petty person, he is the only guest panelist whose name I go out of my way not to note in the video titles. So no, it's definitely not just you. But it *may* be just you and me, and one or two others who have chimed in on this over the last year. :)
