I'm an old man and remember Rosemary Clooney on TV as a kid'; my mom really liked her. When I got old, I lived in Las Vegas and she was scheduled to appear, not in the casinos, but at UNLV in their theater. She came out and sat down to perform, and told the audience that she had 2 rows of seats saved for her nephew George, who was coming with some friends--they were in town filiming Ocean's 11. She sang for about an hour and it was amazing--as old as she was and all of her health issues didn't stop her from performing. George never showed.up.

I think this is the only time I've seen the panel NOT guess the mystery challenger. And I have watched dozens of these. Such a simple formula, but so entertaining. Of course, the concept would never work these days. TV, music, movies, all entertainment, so FRACTURED. "Influencers", "stars" of the bazillion cable shows, reality TV performers - it all makes my head spin. When this program aired, stars were just that = true STARS. No wonder I spend my nights combing YT for wonderful moments of the past.

Rosemary Clooney looks so glamorous, healthy, and happy here (except when Bennett asks if she's Patti Page, her chief rival)...yet she was going through a hellish personal life at the time, and within a few short years, would suffer an almost complete mental breakdown and be institutionalized. She battled back and forged a new career as a superlative jazz singer and nightclub performer; I saw her at her very last live engagement, and even though she was extremely heavy and in poor health, which contributed to making her set extremely short, she still wove vocal magic.

Thank you for this delightful impression of our one and only! As for her trip to France: July 25 Rosemary flew into London ,en route to Monte Carlo, where she was met by José Ferrer whom she had divorced only recently / On July 26, Thursday. Rosemary was in Monte Carlo where she sang at a Red Cross benefit at Princess Grace’s invitation. Joe Ferrer was also there. Newspapers taked about a possible reconciliation, but Rosemary told them “There are five good reasons why Ferrer and I met at the airport: “The children, who are at present staying with my mother in Kentucky.”

It's a form of comedy especially fitting for the subject. After all, puns are known as _low_ humor. Besides, if Bennett had interrupted with one of his cheesy puns, he would have ruined the moo-d, requiring him to hide in udder defeat. One can only milk so many puns out of one subject. And I'd butter stop now before I get creamed.

You'd think it would be easy for them to guess Rosemary Clooney: they all seem to know her well; she's been on before; and recall that it was only a couple of months ago that Dorothy, her husband, and the McGuire Sisters were going to see her after the show. The fact that she had absolutely nothing to plug is what stumped the panel. No nightclub performances, no Broadway plays, no movies, nothing. What an oddity!

If you'd like to hear some fresh, NEW songs by Rosey that had never been previously released until a few months ago -- showcased in NEW musical settings supplied by some of today's top musicians (such as from the Atlanta jazz scene), you should check out a CD called "Rosemary Clooney: Rare & Unreleased." Unlike that expensive 4 CD boxed set that was issued on Ms. Clooney that just has her dry vocals and that hideous organ predominating (yuk!), the producers of this new CD have managed to track down their own sources for some incredible performances from when Rosey was in peak vocal form in the mid to late 1950s and early '60s. Her voice is unbelievable…rich and clear and smooth. WOW! She never sounded better. The sound quality is STUNNING. They have added just the right touch of reverb and then put together some tasteful new instrumental backings like sax, clarinet, flute, trombone, new percussion, strings, etc. This is a very classy product and even the photos of her are gorgeous. This CD covers 3 distinct periods (unlike the box set): Big Band, the pop period (with songs she never recorded commercially), and finally some exciting live performances. You owe it to yourself to at least look at this because you can listen to some audio samples on a Facebook page. You can find it here: good-music-store.myshopify.com/products/rosemary-clooney-rare-unreleased

Could be. I notice that at 13.10 to 13.25 there is mention of "having a beef" when it is Dorothy's turn and it seems that someone off camera says something like "with Bennett" and she comments "let's leave that where it belongs". I suspect that there may have been tension between the two of them prior to the episode which could also account for the nervous "sneeze" type stumbling made during her introduction of him. But, hey, these people were effectively performing, often live, to the public most Sunday evenings and there were bound to be some background issues.

Rosemary Clooney had just performed at an expensive event for President Kennedy and she was close to the Kennedy family. She campaigned for Robert Kennedy and was with him at the Ambassador Hotel when he was shot. She heard the shots. She suffered a nervous breakdown about a month later, which may have had some relation to that fact. But she had abused substances before then. She was not faithful to Mel Ferrer during their two marriages according to numerous sources.

When she remarried Ferrer it was the same as before he was still unfaithful with various women so she finally left him. This was the second time in early 1962 WML episodes where Arlene seemed . . . . uh -- flushed. This may account for why she was so memorably funny with the second contestant.

Apparently, Martin Gabel was quite a heavy drinker, and I doubt that Arlene was a teetotaler. But even though she definitely seems "tipsy," she's even funnier than usual, and as charming as ever.

In later years she was heavy and when she got off the stage, she shook the floor, this was at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco. A very good singer of course. She had a trumpet player that was great. Later I heard him many time on KJAZ radio. I'll have to look up his French sounding name. It sounds like Martin bushay The spelling in incorrect of course.

In 1981, I bought one of my first 45 rpm records, Shakin's Steven's "This Ole House." My mother said that this was "an old song from my teens, by a woman named Rosemary Clooney." My grandmother said shortly thereafter, "..and that doesn't sound like Rosemary Clooney (!)" Apparently, Rosemary Clooney didn't like having to record this song, but was "obliged" to, or get fired. I wonder if she liked Shakin' Steven's version better..! Regardless, I assumed she liked the money that it brought in.
