The second challenger lived in the Jackson Heights neighborhood of the borough of Queens. That's one of the two neighborhoods which border LaGuardia Airport (the other neighborhood being East Elmhurst). She moved from Pittsburgh (not the south as Dorothy remembered) to a location very convenient to domestic flights out of LGA on American Airlines.

Her pairing with Pasolini as unlikely as it was turned out to be the best thing that happened to Silvana Mangano. Before that she used to be your stereotypical neorealistic Italian actress (working girl vibes etc), but after that she transported herself into the world of eternally poetic mythical heroines. I had to look up Mangano, and realised she was the female star of 'Anna' (1951) where she, as a blonde, delightfully suggestively performs in a nightclub singing 'El Negro Zambon' (actually, Flo Sandon did the singing; Mangano lip-synched). In the wonderful film, Caro Diario (1993), Nanni Moretti goes into a cafe and Mangano is on a television screen performing this number and he dances to it. Oh, the connections in one's life! The original film, the homage to her in his film, and now WML....what a pleasure for me. Robert, uk.

The lifeguard, Oskar Laredo, was born in Wurzburg Germany in 1878. He was Jewish. He and his wife, Else, had three sons, born in 1909 1911 and 1921. The oldest son emigrated to NY and was able to get his parents out of Germany in May 1937. They arrived by ship on the day of the Hindenburg crash. They applied for citizenship in July. Their middle and youngest sons were living in France by 1937. No word on if they survived. Else died in 1948. Oskar in 1966.

Silvana had wonderful late teenage years after a tough WWII with an English mom in Italy, but at this point at age 26 she was married to a frog, had several kids, and after "Bitter Rice" had 100% of Italian men swooning over her and 50% of Italian women tut-tutting. The powerful "Anna" movie (her best) was intended to make her more saintlike - as a highly competent nursing sister BTW not a nun. Still, she's sorta acting here to confuse the audience as WML participants often did. :-)

@jackkomisar458
@jackkomisar458 3 жыл бұрын
They were asking about the costume because they thought the contestant dealt with humans. This is the kind of happy accident, resulting in laughter, that was the life-blood of the show. That is one reason why I don't think the panelists were tipped off about the contestants. As far as diapers are concerned, they could be mentioned, but it was tricky to mention what they were for. For example, n another episode, one contestant ran a diaper service. Bennett Cerf asked whether "wee ones" could make use of the service. Then the whole theater dissolved into raucous laughter.

+Sdk ElMaruecan The flight attendant worked for one of the sponsors of WML. And her connection to the panelists was recent. Therefore they didn't want to take the chance that her segment would be dropped if the first three segments ran long enough to cut out the forth segment. And as entertaining as the final challenger was, he didn't top the entertainment value of the first challenger. That segment was one of the very best that I have seen on WML (whatever Gary has posted from the first episode in 1950 through this one).

The further along I am in watching the WML episodes in sequence, the more amazed I become when I have never heard of the MG. I was approaching my fourth birthday when this episode aired and was quite precocious. it wasn't long after this that I could read and add a column of two-digit numbers. I knew the names of many baseball players by this time, a few other sports celebrities, and some show business people, mostly comedians and the hosts of children's programs. More importantly, within a few years, I would know about most celebrities and political figures. Yet somehow, Miss Mangano's name was completely unknown to me until I watched this episode. And she had quite a lengthy career and was married to a famous celebrity in the movie business. Perhaps most important is the fact that while I enjoy science fiction, I never watched "Dune" or read any of the books in the Dune series of novels.

I was getting frustrated watching/listening to the panelists trying to figure out what the first guest did for a living, which was being a nurse to a baby gorilla. They continually stayed on this tangent about clothing, about uniforms of every conceivable aspect, etc., such that this singular focus "blinded" their respective efforts to move on, to broaden their perspectives, via asking different questions that might have given them the answer.

Dorothy Kilgallen must have thought the mystery guest could be the newly Princess Grace (Kelly) of Monaco because the MG spoke in french. That's the best explanation of why she asked if the MG was "royal" and if she could adress her directly. At least, it fits the timeline. Otherwise, it seemed strange...

Supposedly Lucy Ricardo's grape-stomping scene on "I Love Lucy" was a spoof of Silvana Mangano in "Bitter Rice". If Lucy had been more faithful to the original, would she have made saké instead of wine?

The dress she wore on this episode did little to show off voluptuous measurements. Nor did her costumes in many of her other pictures (according to the images I retrieved on Google and IMDB), with Bitter Rice being a notable exception. I have to wonder if her figure was enhanced for that film. She wouldn't be the first woman, actress or otherwise, to receive some help in that area. A prime example is Lea Thompson's character in "Back to the Future II". (Not to mention Michael J. Fox in drag in that same film.)

Lois Simmons she lost a lot of weight to achieve what she considered a more refined look. That loss is considerably shown in the films directed by Luchino Visconti about 10 years later

@@loissimmons6558 in "Bitter rice" she didn't receive any help. That was her original body, but she had a problem with being an erotic dream......After her initial and enormous success, she become thiner and thiner because I suppose her ideal look was Audrey Hepburn's and not Jane Russell's or Sophia Loren's..... Few years after this show, she became a sophisticated lady of the italian cinema and left to Sophia Loren, Gina Lollobrigida and Silvana Pampanini the struggle for being "the sexiest italian star"....In many people's opinion, however, Mangano was the sexiest
