Today more and more people are changing the way they graze their livestock. With results of Holistic grazing being so dramatic compared to conventional grazing. Intensive grazing is slowly becoming the new normal. In this video I will go over the supplies needed to get started.
Holistic Livestock management is a system designed by Alan Savory. Alan manages thousands of acres in Africa where he studied the wildlife's constant movement to new land. This gave the animals fresh grass to forage and allowed rest to the areas they had been. Alan then mimicked this system and got great result from the land.

This is a well presented and informative video. It's nice to see the videos by the promoters and researchers, but the really valuable videos are like this one. Here we have someone who actually does it on a daily basis, presenting his experience in a well organized way, speaking clearly in complete sentences without humming and hawing or incessantly clearing his throat or being drowned out by wind noise. This is pure gold for someone who it actually about to start intensive grazing.

Hi, What's the mineral feeder with the fly control top on it called, that looks like an excellent idea, I haven't seen those in Australia, would you be able to do a video on it's use and how effective you find it, what the active substance is that is used in it and so on?

How many cows can I mob graze on 180 acres? How long does each 1-5 acre paddock need rest?
@GrazingAcresFarm
@GrazingAcresFarm 7 ай бұрын
We lease 176 acres but only 125ish is grazable. We our currently a cow/calf operation of about 30 cows and we have no issue with the 130 acres keeping up as long as it doesn't dry up. We do buy all of our hay though so that is something to consider, do you want to cut part out for hay production or graze it all.

I graze 1to 5 acre padds and let them rest for at least 30 days, 45 to 60 is better unless it's the spring flush then you need to move them fast to keep up.

Another great video JC. I was cracking up with that cow smelling your camera but then they really pulled one over on you when they came all the way across the pasture to hijack your instructional video and turn it into a bovine porn shoot. Your vids are great and thanks for recommending Greg Judy vids and others, you've kept me busy looking at great stuff.

+John Beckman Yes, they stole my spotlight that is for sure! I am glad you enjoyed it. It took some time to put that one together and get it down to just 20 minutes long. Is there anything certain you would like to see next? I am taking video suggestions. Glad you researched Greg Judy he has some very good insight on Holistic grazing. He is easy to listen to also, he makes things simple. Thanks for watching John and if you come up with a video idea let me know! Jason

Love the video's. If your looking for suggestions, "Winter Grazing". Be nice to see how your system works in the freezing weather and snow (seeing how it's winter right now). Were up in Canada (-20 temp, 10-14" snow) and just looking at getting Cattle, but winter grazing is one thing that seems a little crazy for us right now (but maybe once we get cows it will just work out). Thanks.

if thats a 200 acre farm then couldnt you have 200 cows? ive always heard a acre per cow not including your hayfields but i know it depends on your land
@GrazingAcresFarm
@GrazingAcresFarm 8 жыл бұрын
+storminnormanz Well some is woodland and I wouldn't want to overstock the density. That is the old rule of thumb though. You have to understand that if you put that many animal on our farm the land will not have time to heal before we come back to it. That is one of the big key points to intensive/mob grazing, letting the land rest and recuperate before the herd returns. I wouldn't want more than probably 75-100 head at the most at one time. You have to think about your seasonal rain fall and figure if your land can support your head also. Thanks for watching. Jason

How would I go about regenerating a pasture that’s been over grazed for so many years that it’s got next to nothing growing on it each summer? Spreading seed on top in spring? Breaking and reseeding? No till re seeding? Or just start a very dense and very short mob graze on it with lot of recovery? I can also spread my manure on this ground is that a good idea?
@GrazingAcresFarm
@GrazingAcresFarm 5 жыл бұрын
I would suggest bale grazing. Unroll the bales and let the cattle eat them. This will help spread the manure piles out plus there will be some hay left to feed the soil. Make sure to use good hay though because the seeds in the hay will sprout next season. This is by far the cheapest and easiest way to build a nice pasture without a bunch of resources.

Thanks a lot for the reply! Greg Judy said the same thing but I’m hoping not to waste much hay this season as I’m in the second year drought so I’m going make them clean it up but I think at least the manure and a lot of seed will be left behind and hopefully that will help alot

Good video Jason. Although I dont have cattle, Ive very intrigued by the mob grazing/hollistic grazing methodologies. It just makes sense. I know it doesn't work everywhere, but it certainly is a more healthily approach for the the animals and humans in the long run. I do wonder why you aren't using a solar fence charger for your fencing? I have a small garden next to my apple orchard, and I use a solar charger from Tractor Supply ($170) to keep the deer and rabbits out. It has a 10 mile range and 0.15 joule. Should be plenty enough for your application? Never have to worry about power outages, and they are virtually maintenance free. Im just thinking out loud. Im enjoying everything Im read about this new approach to feeding and livestock health... Keep up the good work sir!

Hey Joey, I have learned a lot in the last 5 years of my cattle venture about holistic grazing and it still amazes me. I have a hard time understanding why so many farmers are not doing this. There are many ways to use this model with small livestock. For instance, You could buy some electric poultry netting and build a small portable coop then place this in your orchard. You would move it every couple days and the chickens would eat all insect around the trees. You gain pest control that will pay you in eggs and adds nitrogen to the soil. I have looked at the solar fence chargers just never made the switch. I do however have a battery powered charger I can use if the power goes out for too long. I have never used it though because the cattle seem to think it's still hot. lol

We used the plastic type post 1st time last yr, we had so many break from snow drifts that were 4-5 foot as well as a few jumper yearnings that snapped them in half. So we stick with the fiberglass post. My question is, when rotational grazing, can I simply use electric fencing wire instead of the poly wire? I dont have a crank, but Ive always hooked a post thru the wire and used a screw driver to wind up the wire when I move fences.
@GrazingAcresFarm
@GrazingAcresFarm 4 жыл бұрын
I've seen people use metal wire vs the poly wire and it does seem to work. I don't know how easy it breaks though. I would think rolling it up time after time may weaken it.

Good information. I'm just getting started with intense grazing in Kentucky. Are you using freeze hydrants and water hoses and how far apart? Thank you sir
@GrazingAcresFarm
@GrazingAcresFarm 5 жыл бұрын
Yes our farm is setup with 32 of the frost proof water spigots. Each pasture has at least 3. The spacing on them varies though. They were placed on how we would setup the paddocks in each pasture. I do use kink free water hoses and a RV water pressure reducer to keep the hose from blowing out when the float valve closes in the stock tank. It seems over time of the hose laying in the sun the water pressure will cause the hose to expand until it gets a hole. Of course this can take a month or so but the RV reducer stopped that issue for me. Amazon carries the RV pressure reducer.

JC, that you for sharing your practices so well. I suppose I'm a dreamer but would it be economical to use a horse instead of the ATV? Perhaps the advantage of more manure would offset the added labor. Thanks again. Mike
@GrazingAcresFarm
@GrazingAcresFarm 8 жыл бұрын
+Mike Trev A horse would probably make more sense yes. If a person has time to manage the horse. I do not, so for me the ATV works great. Plus you have to consider the time it takes to saddle a horse everyday vs just starting the ATV. Sure gas is an added expense but for me it works. Thanks for watching! Jason

+luis murillo The mineral feeder we use is sold here www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pgguid=246f390a-ca8e-4ed1-bda0-d1cb7daf294b&gas=mineral%20feeder . We mounted our feeder to a semi tire to get it off the ground. Then I mounted an eye bolt on the side so I can pull it with my atv. The "Fly Killer Kover" is sold here www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pgguid=a6689288-ede0-4141-9305-f35350a25d37&ccd=IGO045&gclid=CjwKEAiAgeW2BRDDtKaTne77ghgSJACq2U4bePM0jipv3GOQmKKW64Xeb0gRlVhvrHEAgBAr9Ut5CRoCENLw_wcB&kwid=95701404845x10110980045x170311325 . I know the cover is expensive but well worth the investment in my opinion. There is several organic fly control agents available on the market. Just search "organic livestock fly control" on Google, you should find several. We use a product from Crystal Creek called "No Fly" it's just essential oils. It's smells wonderful. We call it cow perfume! Here another video of mine talking about our fly control. I believe I show the fly agents we use. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5iomIlti8eKirM

@GrazingAcresFarm
@GrazingAcresFarm 7 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah! The farms fence charger is way bigger than we need. The farm is 176 acres and the charger is for 900 acres. I now have chickens on the farm in poultry netting and do not have issues. The only problem with the netting is it grounds out easy as the grasses grow. So you either have to mow where the netting is going or move in cattle first to graze it down.
