Totally agree. I've been out for just shy of 40 years (yep I'm getting invitations from the alumni association for the 40th reunion) and students today have crazy awesome stationery choices. If I had a hobonichi cousin in college, well let's just say, I'd have been hella organized. No portable computers when I was in college either. Apple wasn't a thing in 1981 when I started college.

I just got the Iris Diamond 580 and yes it is a *beautiful* pen (and writes as smooth as most TWSBI pens do). Really pleased with it. I'd especially recommend it if you're just starting to look at slightly pricier pens since it writes so well and aesthetically shows off quite a bit.

as someone with zero knowledge on fountain pen brands I thought brown was cute and went to look at it on the site... $360 had me choking. this is indeed an adult money hobby
@cferracini2 жыл бұрын
It's a gold nib pen. The "cheap" ones start at about $150. But you really don't need a gold nib. Steel nibs are good too, just not as smooth, but if you are used to gel pens a good steel nib will feel softer. Also, Sailor is one of the brands that don't have cheaper pens. If you want to try fountain pens, you can get a Preppy for about $5. It's a great pen. My all-time favorite. If you use 0.3 gel pens, you will likely like Preppy 0.2 (EF from other brands), but I recommend getting the 0.3 as your first because the 0.2 sometimes the nib needs a bit of ajusting with a brass sheet (just the name, for example, Pilot gives a plastic brass sheet with their Parallel calligraphy pens) so the feed get more ink flow. The Preppy 0.5 is an M nib. You just need to understand that European and American nibs write thicker than Asian nibs and Japanese nib tips are especially thin. If you want a European recommendation, the Lamy Safari is a lot of people's first fountain pen for a reason. It's about $20, but loved by almost a cult. I personally don't like it very much because it writes very wet so even with an EF nib it's still too thick of a line for my taste. There is also the gamble of the unbranded Chinese pens. I bought some. 1 came with a broken nib so I had to by extra nibs. 1 was a disapointment writing (Hero brand, some like, I hated it). 2 were great and I still use. It seems like the Safari imitations tend to be good, the one with the broken nib writes well with the new nib and 1 of the perfect ones were both Safari imitations costing about $2 each. All that said, fountain pens save me money because I use ink bottles to syringe refill my cartridges so now I don't buy gel pens. I have all my favorite colors and enough extra fine pens to use them all. I also like to think it's more ecological since it's less plastic with gel pens and their refills. So, it doesn't need to be an expensive hobby =)
@XSemperIdem52 жыл бұрын
I got excited when that other pen could pull ink directly like a syringe. I also know nothing about fountain pens and don't even really want one because I don't have a use for it. But that feature made me say "ohh"
@cferracini2 жыл бұрын
@@XSemperIdem5 Those are called vacuum or piston filling pens. You can also get a random nameless Chinese one for less than $5. I got mine for $3 and it is the other one I mentioned I still use. I like the way it writes. That type of pen is not great to clean up but it is really fun to fill. But you can do that with any fountain pen if you have a converter. Most converters are screw types, but there are a few different like one to push a nob or the Pilot one that you squeeze to get air out and let loose (still holding) to let ink in. That last one holds very little ink but it comes as a freebie in the Parallel pens.

@@cferracini WOW this was such an interesting deep dive in the comments! This was very informative! The Preppy 0.3 is my favorite as well, its pretty popular
@beritbunny2 жыл бұрын
Carla gave some good info and opinions in their comment IMO. Some of my favorite pens are the Pilot Kakuno (which are relatively inexpensive, especially compared to a Sailor x Line Friends release.) (FYI, I also like a really fine line.) The only thing I pretty much dislike about that Kakuno, which I often see for about $11-15, is that you need to buy the “converter” (basically the easily-refillable reusable ink reservoir inside the pen) separately for about $5-8. I think this is a great pen for under $15; but making it in the $20 range…eh… Well, there are a lot of issues with inflation affecting prices of things recently. I have not tried it yet, because buying has not been convenient, but a blunt-tipped syringe can be used to help clean and refill even disposable cartridges used for many pens (including the Kakuno I mentioned, I think; and Kakuno comes with at least one cartridge included, so you can use that to start writing right out of the box!)

I love the Kokuyo mechanical pencils, they advance lead smoothly, they don't let me snap lead and they will hold lead without breaking it. Alas, I finished school 20 years ago before stuff like this came to exist. I want the diamond iris so bad but I just spent a ton of disposable income recently on the Pilot Falcon, hahaha!
