Thanks for all the content you make. I'm not a professional builder, but I've applied many of your techniques and recommended projects to my renovation and it's just been fantastic. Some of my friends are builders and GCs and they all watch your stuff, too. I think the industry is generally overflowing with a mix of dogmatic tradition, marketing fluff, and scientific breakthroughs, but overall is starved for practical information about real world applications. I think your content is leading the way toward bridging the gaps and certainly helps inform newbies and homeowners alike with keeping some builders accountable. No one wants to build a bad house and no one wants to live in one.

Long form videos like this one are great! It's mentioned at the end of the video that Roseburg is being used on the Boston build. I recognized the "pocket header" detail described by Brian and Will at the beginning of this video as the same detail that @Steven Baczek Architect showed on the Boston build and explained in great detail how it enables more insulation to be included.

I like this content format for its focus and high density of technical and experiential information. Since I am not dialed into all of the "new" tech it would have been nice to include a few diagrams on the background of your presentation platform just showing and explaining what SVL, LVL, SPF, etc. are and mean. If I could visually know what you were thinking about it would go a long way to making this video even more informative. I've watched 15 minutes and 11 seconds of this video so far and all I could take away was Engineered lumber= strong and long and flat but weak to rot, Solid lumber= is more rot resistant but more prone to warping and if I have a custom house built, ask my potential builders how long they have been in the business and what kind of mistakes have they made (because they are less likely to make the same mistakes again, conversely if they are not willing to talk about their mistakes "We always build to spec" or something along those lines, then that means they will make the same mistakes they have made before because they aren't acknowledging them) I will be watching the rest, I just wanted you to have a frame of reference for my comment.

We just built a 38' chase box, 4 psl posts, one in each corner, top to bottom. Lvl studs in between. That thing was like a rock. We built it on the 2nd deck, slid it off the deck the height of the 1st floor, strapped it and tilted it up right into place with the JLG. Engineered products are amazing.

Matt, I was only half joking when I told you to get me my continuing competency credits for having to listen to you talk for 3 hours. If The Build Network had a way to put those types of videos on its website…and you guys got paid to lecture, I think we all would pay the fee. Win win!!!

It blows me away to see this. I am from Roseburg. I grew up with friends and family that worked at Roseburg, and my dad hauled logs in and lumber out for 20+ years.

I agree, it's kind of sad. It's like a whole commercial. He still puts out good content, but it would be better, and more honest, if he was unsponsored.

I AM concerned about the balance between (1) how much influence sponsorship has on his opinion of materials and practices versus (2) the unbiased, raw and unfiltered views unaffected by sponsors. I’m a long time viewer. I DO BELIEVE that Matt has a legitimate, genuine interest in improving his profession. BUT I do worry just how commercialized his channel has become over the years. Accepting money in exchange for promoting products or practices is ALWAYS fraught with risk. And the popularity that his channel has achieved CAN lead to losing sight on one’s honest perspective, IMO.

TStuds are an amazing product but availability is lacking. If you’re able to get them go for it. Unfortunately for much of the US distribution is unavailable

My how the tables have turned, I live in the the very cold north region, and feel like the majority of the info out there is on how to build down south. But that's probably just because I watch a lot of your videos! Very informative. I liked the part about the headers, makes perfect sense.

Matt (or anyone in the industry)- when will we see the big box stores regularly stock LSL studs in stores nationwide? Or will it always remain custom order from supply distributors? Will joe blow redoing his own kitchen ever be able to drive down the block to HD or Lowe’s & pick up a pickup bed of LSL’s at a price that approaches traditional solid studs?

@@mattmag3089 yea but I’m referring to LSL studs for basic wall framing. LVLs for headers have become near standard for awhile I agree u see them at big box stores. But for LSL 2x4 studs- Will that ever see price parity and big box distribution, if so when? 5 years, 20 yrs? Or never? Are they just too different of a resource that the traditional solid sawn 2x4 will always reign supreme

No mention of poly-iso wrap......pay no attention of the man in the booth. Skip the high-end LVL studs, and wrap your home with polyisocyanurate sheathing.......incredible insulation!! Northern NC with a 2500 sf home, and Duke Energy has replaced my meter three times .....(pretty sure they think something just ain't right??) $25 dollars a week for the last 16 years...........the Duke bill shows performance of my home compared to others in the area, and I've ALWAYS been by far THE most energy efficient home...(million dollar builds right up the street....) Polyiso sheathing....the ONLY insulation more efficient is Aerogel...REALLY kinda expensive.....R-Max at HD is what I used. Think of it...keep the wood in the walls warm?
