Machi Koro 2 is a new game from Pandasaurus Games coming in the Fall of 2021. Machi Koro 2 is the sequel to the wildly popular game Machi Koro. In this video we break down all of the changes in Machi Koro 2. Machi Koro 2 has new cards, new landmarks, a new setup, a new way to start the game, and a new way to win the game, but it keeps the same great strategy and dice rolling, card activating mechanics that we love in Machi Koro!
Machi Koro 2 is a fantastic gateway game and an amazing family game. Machi Koro 2 is totally accessible to players young and old. If you're looking for a great family board game that adults and kids can play together, Machi Koro 2 is probably one you should look at!
So what's new in Machi Koro 2?
Machi Koro 2 has a totally new setup. In Machi Koro, you lay out cards in stacks by number, but Machi Koro 2 has 3 decks of cards - cards that activate on 1-6, cards that activate on 7-12, and Landmarks. To setup Machi Koro 2, you put out 5 unique cards from each deck, and those are the cards available to buy.
Machi Koro 2 also has a new starting mechanic. Instead of having the same starting hands like Machi Koro, in Machi Koro 2, there's 3 rounds of buying where players can buy any available cards they want.
The gameplay and dice rolling all happens the same way as Machi Koro - Roll the dice and activate the cards with the same number.
But Machi Koro 2 also has a new way to win! Instead of a standard set of landmarks, there's an entire deck of landmarks that have a variety of benefits - some affect only the builder, and some affect everybody. And you win Machi Koro 2 by being the first person to build 3 landmarks.

I have pre-ordered it in my local store and looking forward to playing it! I agree that the base game felt too repetitive and with the expansions there were too many cards, I hope this version fixes both issues.

Great video! We encountered this problem when playing the game and could not find an answer from the rules. Could a player build the same landmark more than once and trigger the effect each time?

Once a landmark is built, it’s built and you couldn’t build it again. If it’s an immediate effect you would only use it once when you build it, but if it’s an ongoing effect you would continue to have the effect available.

We did get SpaceBase about a month ago because we were told many times that if we liked Machi Koro we would like SpaceBase as well. But we have to get it to the table! Soon though! - Alison

It definetly seems better than the first one. Once you had played Space base, you would not want to play original machi koro ever again. This could maybe give Space base a run for it’s money

Do you think it’s possible to apply the rules of machi Koro 2 to machi koro 1 with its expansions to turn MK1 into an equally fun game ?

I don't really think so, because of the landmarks. A really big part of MK2 is the way the landmark abilities affect or are available for other players, which has been the deciding factor of the game for us in more than one instance.

I am considering doing the same thing. I don't like Machi Koro 2 doesn't have the expansions that you can now buy as one bundle in MK1. It sucks to lose all those cool cards.

It looks like its cheaper than the first game does it hold up in terms of component quality?

Component quality as far as I can tell is exactly the same. Coins are the same plastic, dice are the same quality, and cards all felt the same weight/thickness.

so disappointing.... thought this was actually a new game...ive already bought machikoro, machikoro dark and machikoro legacy. NO MORE
