Having grown up in Vancouver, I always felt that it’s missing another East-West Skytrain line that would connect southeast Van/Burnaby directly with West Van and Richmond. Right now, in order to get to Richmond, everyone has to travel North to downtown and then south again on Canada Line. In other words, since Van doesn’t have a good regional rail system, it needs more redundancy and parallel coverage in its rapid transit network, both in the city and out to the burbs like South Surrey. Also, Skytrain is great but ideally we could use true GO RER/Trillium Line/Exo kind of regional rail network. Also, other low hanging fruits: why isn’t there a secondary VIA Rail station in places like South Surrey/White Rock that would make travelling to Seattle/Oregon so much easier by rail?
@aberas76283 жыл бұрын
The folks with the Cascadia Innovation Corridor Project have the BC Terminus for their UHSR in Surrey or the Langley's, so if a new SoF station for VIA/AMTRAK were designed ahead of time, as you suggest, it could facilitate expansion of the future HSR, two birds one stone. That makes the site (Surrey/Langleys) a rail nexus of sorts, with the Eastern Expo Line Terminus, shovel ready today. The western terminus for whatever rail service the valley communities decide to go with, to link the Valley and Metro Vancouver. Intercity traffic to Seattle and Portland (to serve tourist demand... like the Rocky Mountaineer, maybe? I see trains replacing cruise ships in some regions, and the Pacific Coast Highway route would be perfect for that !) I know some of these projects might or might not happen, and costs/priorities/technologies can change. But the kind of project like you suggest, a Rail Depot closer to the US border, can pay off handsomely in the future and spur further development, without breaking the bank doing so.

I think the challenge with getting commuter rail going is you have to get the class 1s to actually want to play ball with you and in proximity to Canada's largest port and geographically constrained the railways are going to be difficult about getting good access to the lines. Might be able to get there if we promised to rebuild the whole corridor and financially compensate them for the outage time but that likely pushes the price up to the point of absurdity. WCE is in an awkward middle ground where it's close tot he capacity limit in how it currently operates but that's just not enough to really take on the cost/complications of next steps.
@RealisticMgmt3 жыл бұрын
Agree with you 100%, we need to dramatically expand transit in Metro Vancouver. It's not the time to be complacent. I would love to see something like a Circle Loop connecting East Van, where ridership would be high from the get-go. I also think a new Fraser Valley commuter line and WCE expansion needs to be prioritized. Highway 1 is a disaster now, and it's only going to get worse as the region continues to grow. But even simple things like the improved Compass card, will go a long way to helping the overall quality and convenience of the service!

Second if possible to have Translink takeover the transit services in the entire Frasier Valley from Hope to Vancouver so it is all one integrated transit network, if not then yes be able to use your compass card on all transit systems in the Frasier Valley. I would also like to see either a Canada Line extension or a new LRT line all together from Richmond-Brighouse Station all the way out to the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal, cause the bus line that goes from Bridgeport to Tsawwassen is always full. I know this is not really related to what you are talking about but to alleviate the amount of traffic using Tsawwassen Ferry terminal to go over to Victoria reintroduce service from Horseshoe Bay to Victoria. Another thing would be introduce all day service along the West Coast Express in both directions from as many as two trains an hour during peak times to one train an hour during off peak times.

On the elevator redundancy point, accessibility is very beneficial beyond just including the handicapped. Its often called the "Curb cut effect", and the simple act of putting in a curb cut for a wheelchair means that now your delivery guy can easily get his dolly up onto the sidewalk, parents with a stroller can easily get onto the sidewalk, and basically anything with wheels now has access up the 3in cliff that is the curb. Elevators to the same thing indoors, they let you easily move frieght, food carts, mop buckets, ect between floors and benefit everything that can can't use the stairs, not just the mobility impaired. Besides, accessibility usually means quality of life to anyone who doesn't actually need it.

I always thought there are savings to be had to extending the train - but not the platform. I don't know Vancouver that well, but lets say we add a 3rd car to Canada Line. Extend the busiest station platforms to 3 car length, and leave the others alone. Then people know that say for City Hall and South, it's the front 2 cars that line up with the platform (and the doors don't open on the 3rd). Then north of City Hall, it's the back to cars that line up with the platform.

The music you use is so cool, for all of your videos. I gotta say that I really dug that laidback sax on this one. Oh yeah! It's annoying when planning agencies bring up things like flying cars and autonomous vehicles. It's so irresponsible as none of these technologies exist. Yes, automated cars are in testing, but that's not the same as widespread deployment. The truth is, no one really knows how that will play out as we have no data. It's all speculation, mostly from technophiles and companies looking to sell a product. Not the most reliable lot for impartial information. It'd be one thing to start taking the technology into consideration after mass deployment, but not before. Using off-the-shelf technologies and tried solutions is best. Yeah, they're not as flashy, but they work, are widely available, have a proven track record, and actually exist! It really feels like driverless cars and flying vehicles are being used as monorails or PRT were in past times: flashy ideas that ended up being used as an excuse to do nothing except expand auto usage. I've actually heard about the project connecting North Vancouver and that six alignments are currently under study. Sounds exciting! I hope it happens, along with the extension under Broadway all the way to the university. I'm kind of surprised it's not all being done at one time, but that's North American transit planning for you. Will you do a video in the future going into detail about BRT in Vancouver?

Thanks for this fab production - got my transit 'fix' for the day! Anyway, it got me thinking more about the idea for a circular line, very much in line with what Reece covered here. I have always looked at Vancouver's densely populated West End and thought that it seems disconnected from decent connections to the close-by business CBD as well as destinations further afield. I get it that high density does not mean automatic ridership, but surely there would be sufficient demand within the sea of highrises of the West End, when micro-connectivity is built into stations or corridors leading to stations, to maybe extend a circular line west beyond the CBD into the West End? This line could then, over the longer term, curve south under False Creek and down, say the Arbutus corridor and hook up to the southern end of the circular line. Is there any merit in building higher-order transit in/under the West End, particularly if this line would be part of a bigger circular line?
@lesmcclaughry2732 Жыл бұрын
Thoughts to ponder. The most congested traffic in the area and perhaps in the country is the Massey Tunnel. The eventual new tunnel will only be a short term solution. Expanding the Canada Line through Richmond, across the Fraser into Ladner then down to Twassawsen with a spur that goes to the ferry terminal. The spur could be timed to match ferry arrivals and departures. Currently we have huge numbers of people riding the ferries as walkon passengers many of these people would use skytrain to get to and from the terminal. As well, people from the island would be able to attend events in Vancouver without traffic and parking hassels. Hockey, Football, concerts and others and the spur could be built mostly at ground level.

BC Transit should fully adopt Compass rather than creating their own digital fare system, and Compass should also be used for BC Ferries. Another item would be installing "bike rails" on stairways in stations so people can roll their bike rather than carry it. The 555 meets the 66FVX and runs to Chilliwack. I was also thinking a branch of the Expo line from Surrey to White Rock might be a good idea as well, as well as maybe another Canada line extension from YVR-Airport to Steveston? And also an electrified regional rail service from Vancouver to Whistler? Finally, as you rightly said at 9:53, Canada Line should be expanded to 3 or 4 coaches. Looking photos and videos on the internet (I am yet to visit the whole of Canada let alone Vancouver lol), the Canada Line appears to be very underbuilt, as one constructive criticism of the line.

Great video. The 555 likely won't get extended as Fraser Valley Transit already runs the 66 Fraser Valley Express from Chilliwack, Abbotsford to Calvoth Exchange where it connects to the 555. The 66 is planned to be extended to Lougheed Skytrain 2020 but delayed a year due to Covid. BC Transit runs all transit outside Metro Vancouver and they're exploring a payment App. I would love to see compass card used all over BC. One card for all 72 transit systems and on the ferries. We already have a single library card that can be used anywhere in BC. Skytrain is planned to operate 5 car platform length walkthrough trains. The guideway and power supply is in place to accommodate them. They're on order and a new OMC is planned to accommodate them. Canada Line can accommodate three car trains, but any longer is impossible because of the shallow tunnels and tracking raising and falling to follow the contours. The max.capacoty of canada line is 15000 people per hour per direction. Totally agree we need a plan for more Skytrain and electric buses and rapid buses. Great Video.

Though extending the 555 east would duplicate the 66, especially once the 66 is extended to Lougheed. The 555 extended east would go outside Translink Service zone and therefore BC Transit would need to operate it.

Train lengths. Expo and Millennium can handle 5 car 80 metre trains with existing platforms. Going to 6 car would require platform extensions. This would be fairly expensive in the tunnels and some elevated due to rack geometry. Skytrain can run at 75 second intervals., And 45 seconds ina crush. So there's a lot of capcity room by running more frequent trains. As there are no drivers this is cost effective and the plan of Translink to met demand. Canada Line can accommodate 60 metre trains on 50 metre platforms, which would be a three car trains. The platforms can't be extended any longer due to track geometry. There are steep grades on the line so the platform would have to slope too and switches and tunnel segments would need to be rebuilt. Again cheaper to run the automated trains much more frequently.
@RMTransit3 жыл бұрын
I’m well aware of the platform length constraints! But it’s not the case that we couldn’t extend the current platforms, I’ve done a lot of studying myself and a large number could be extended with little issue! This is important because operating consistently beyond 90s headway’s is very difficult! That’s why I mention SDO, at the few stations where we could not extend platforms some doors would simply not open! With regard to the 555 extending to aldergrove would still be in the TL service area!

The should move Westcoast Express from Abbotsford Airport right down the median on Hwy 1 across Port Mann and then hook onto existing railway through Burnaby Park north and then along bottom Millennium line until Broadway Commercial Hub. Run 120 kms on it's own dedicated track Hwy 1 and bridge with one stop at Langley 555 stop. Build huge parking lot around these two stations. And a new platform Broadway Station with Ikea size elevators straight from Millennium level to 3rd level Expo Line level.

A cable car between Waterfront Station and North Van Lonsdale Quay would be much more cost effective than a Canada Line tunnel. At 3.25km, it's within reach of a gondola, and the pylons would have to be very high to allow shipping underneath. If an intermediate pylon is required, it could be built in Stanley Park, albeit on a dog leg.
@RMTransit3 жыл бұрын
That’s true but I do wonder how that would perform in harsh weather given how tall it would need to be

@@RMTransit The Emirates Air Line in London is a mono-cable, and it shuts down at winds greater than 30 mph (45 kph), which occurs about 30 days a year. Bi- or tri-cable systems provide greatly enhanced stability and safety, allowing for operation during major winds (up to 100 km/h). Furthermore, the Emirates Air Line is minimum 60m above the river to allow shipping and tall sailing ships to pass under. I suspect a similar height would be necessary for Vancouver Harbour.

There is an activate airport in the middle of Coal Harbour with the float planes, so unlikely that this would ever get approved.

hi I was watching this on my iPad, but now have to take out my keyboard to type since some points I don't quite agree. since you are still relative small channel I thought you might read it. anyways, I love Suica, and I hate compass card doesn't load into apple wallet. it should be so easy for the app developer. I don't know why they don't do it. Apple Pay on skytrain is okay, I mean who doesn't want the discount offered by compass card? Suica system is probably 10 times faster than compass card. if you count the time for the gate to open and etc. I have seen a staff opening the gate machine in Tokyo. it's mind blowing how complicated that thing is inside. seems like miles of conveyor belt compassed in that little space. and the door itself is so fast there is literally no delay of passing. I don't think every county need that type of gate since the passenger traffic volume is simply not there yet. I don't have a concrete stat but I assume one day worth of traffic in Shinjuku equals to one months worth in a station like gateway station or maybe six month worth I don't know. the other thing I would like to point out is that I don't think there is need for 555 extend to abby or alder grove. there is Route 66 doing that right now. and the constant traffic between 200 and 264 would make it in possible for bus to run onetime. I think that's why they are not extending 555 all the way there.
@RMTransit3 жыл бұрын
The channel is North American oriented so of course I'm going to say compass is good! LOL the 555 definitely should be extended they are building new bus lanes / HOV lanes so it shouldn't be a big issue

How about a desperately needed North Shore SkyTrain? I think that's top of the list beyond even a SkyTrain to UBC or to Langley. The North Vancouver and West Vancouver have the worst traffic, bar none, in all of North America. Every day there is rush hour gridlock, because the car is still the only viable way of traveling to the North Shore from most areas, and this is one of single densest areas in all of Canada. There's a really decent bus network and the Seabus, but that just is not enough for the North Shore.
@nathandavidowicz37213 жыл бұрын
again NorthShore has only 200000 people out of 3 M for the lower Mainland
@RoboJules3 жыл бұрын
@@nathandavidowicz3721 The North Shore is also tiny, densely packed, has absolutely no more room for roads, and is a major throughway for traffic. Every time a ferry docks in Horseshoe Bay, as many as 400 cars are added to the road network at once. On top of that, Squamish and Whistler are growing like crazy, adding to that immense traffic volume. Making matters worse is the fact that thousands of people commute to North Vancouver every day, the majority of them by car, because there is no other option. North Vancouver needs as much transit as possible to free up a car congestion problem that is only going to get worse until we have solid passenger rail to Whistler with good transit networks on Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast.

Regular early line closures, maintenance issues, weather related delays, lack of anyone checking for payments of fares. That's the Vancouver transit I knew every day until I gave up and started driving again. Very tired of having to move around sleeping homeless people and watching people fair jump while I pay. Thank you Translink. You are responsible for putting my car back on the road on a daily basis. I'm a little tired of your idealist love in with this system. 24 hr bus equals more people.e sleeping on them. Not sure the last time you were on a night bus.

i don’t agree. Vancouver is a legitimate big city. A better city than Toronto and Montreal, but i don’t think it has the best system. It’s not a good system for the city of its size. Once the broadway subway is completed, the surrey line. Then there also needs to be street cars. and a light rail where the heavier skytrain can’t be built.

Vancouver has a great Transit System huh? I have been there many times; I didn't even notice it - I guess that is a good system; keep it hidden and out of the way - maybe something like the Seattle system - very nice but no one uses it.
